Reports said he underwent emergency brain surgery, was placed on life support, and was medically evacuated to New South Wales before his family said goodbye.
What happened to Kevin Malligan in Bali?
Kevin Malligan’s family fundraiser dates the crash to 29 December 2023 and describes him as a passenger in a serious scooter accident in Bali. A 7NEWS report on 1 January said the moped hit a pothole and Malligan was thrown onto the road. PerthNow’s earlier account, citing an interview with his wife, described the moped hitting a bump. These are media accounts, not a published police finding; the reviewed sources do not establish legal responsibility or a definitive crash location.
What injuries and treatment were reported?
News reports said Malligan suffered a brain bleed and fractures to his skull and neck, underwent emergency brain surgery, and was placed on life support at BIMC Hospital in Nusa Dua. The accounts describe severe injuries, but no hospital record or medical statement was located in the sources reviewed, so these details should be understood as reported by news outlets rather than independently documented clinical findings.
When was he brought back to Australia?
After his wife Leah and other family members travelled to be with him, supporters helped raise money for medical and repatriation costs. Later reports said Malligan was flown by medical evacuation to New South Wales on 4 January 2024. The public appeal was described in contemporaneous coverage and in the family’s fundraiser; totals differed by report date and are not a fixed figure.
