What happened to Kevin Malligan in Bali?
Malligan was involved in a serious scooter accident on 29 December 2023 while visiting Bali. His family’s fundraiser says he was a passenger. 7NEWS reported that the scooter hit a pothole and threw him onto the road. The available reporting does not establish a police finding or provide an account from the scooter’s driver, so it does not support further conclusions about fault or the circumstances of the crash.
What injuries and treatment were reported?
7NEWS reported that Malligan suffered a brain bleed and a neck fracture. He underwent surgery to stop the bleeding and relieve pressure, then remained on life support at BIMC Hospital in Nusa Dua. These are details reported by 7NEWS; no clinical records are available here to independently confirm them.
How was Malligan brought back to Australia?
In its 1 January 2024 report, 7NEWS said doctors had cleared Malligan for an emergency flight to Sydney. The report put the expected cost at more than A$100,000, an estimate at the time rather than a verified final bill. Jodie French, Malligan’s father-in-law, told 7NEWS that insurance was not covering the bills; the reporting does not establish why or whether that applied to any particular policy.
