What Happened to Jim Morrison’s 1967 Shelby GT500?

Jim Morrison’s reported 1967 Shelby GT500, the Blue Lady, has a documented connection to a 1969 registration—but no confirmed ending. The Sunset Boulevard crash and LAX auction stories remain theories.

The ultimate fate of Jim Morrison’s reported 1967 Shelby GT500 is unknown. The car—often called the “Blue Lady”—is linked to Morrison by reported registration evidence and film, but neither of the two leading disappearance stories has been verified: one says he crashed it on Sunset Boulevard; the other says it was towed from long-term parking at Los Angeles International Airport and auctioned.

What is known about Morrison’s Shelby

A retrospective account from Cape Cod Mustang says Morrison’s friend Frank Lisciandro kept documents after the singer’s death, including an original registration for a 1967 GT500 dated 1969. The account’s author says he later obtained the car’s VIN and that film showed Morrison driving a Nightmist blue, four-speed car. The registration and film are described in that account but are not reproduced there for independent inspection. Cape Cod Mustang

Street Muscle reports that the California DMV’s last recorded registration was dated April 30, 1969, listing the owner as James Douglas Morrison, care of Johnson/Harband, the accounting firm that handled the Doors’ finances. That reported record connects Morrison to the car at that point; it does not document what happened to it afterward or provide a continuous ownership history. Street Muscle

Two stories explain how the car disappeared

Both stories are accounts of what may have happened, not established endings. The sources reviewed do not connect either one to a documented chain of custody after the 1969 registration or independently confirm the car’s final disposition.

Account What it claims What is established
Sunset Boulevard crash Morrison allegedly crashed the GT500 on Sunset Boulevard and left it behind. MotorTrend presents the crash as its writer’s preferred version, not a proven event. Street Muscle also describes it as a theory. MotorTrend; Street Muscle
LAX tow and auction The car was allegedly left in long-term airport parking, towed, and sold at auction. The account is repeated as a possibility, but the sources reviewed do not verify the tow, auction, buyer, or car’s later history. Cape Cod Mustang; SlashGear

SlashGear retells both accounts and infers that a crash was likely; that inference does not add documentary evidence. A writer’s preference for one version—or repetition across articles—does not establish what happened. SlashGear

Later ownership claims remain unverified

Street Muscle recounts an anonymous Phoenix-area woman’s claim that she had a famous deceased rock star’s car and says she sold an original registration card to a researcher. The article does not verify that she owned Morrison’s Shelby. A registration card can support the reported connection to Morrison without proving that the woman possessed the car itself. A Shelby-club forum discussion also repeats a lead that the car’s license plate appeared in Los Angeles Times advertisements in 1970 and 1971. That forum-reported detail is not proof that the Shelby was recovered, sold through those ads, or subsequently identified. Shelby-club forum discussion

So where is the Blue Lady now?

The available accounts do not establish where the GT500 is today, whether it survived, or how it was finally disposed of. The supported conclusion is narrower: a reported 1969 registration and film link Morrison to a 1967 GT500, while its later history remains unconfirmed. The crash, airport tow and auction, destruction, and later-survivor claims should all be treated as unresolved.
