Detroit’s former auto factories do not share one fate. Fisher Body Plant 21 has stood vacant while a housing-and-commercial redevelopment is proposed; the Packard property is being demolished and replanned with no settled current status; Ford’s Piquette Avenue Plant is a working museum; and the historically crucial Highland Park Ford complex is in another city and still has reported storage use. Calling all of them “abandoned” hides more than it reveals.
The useful way to understand these places is to separate their production history, present condition, ownership or redevelopment activity, and verified public access. The comparison below does that without treating a dangerous or changing work site as a tourist attraction.

Detroit’s factory legacy in one view
Detroit’s auto-manufacturing story is a chain of moves rather than a single campus. Early assembly and body plants expanded, relocated, and changed owners as car companies pursued larger buildings and faster production. Some structures were later cleared, some were left vacant, and a few survived as museums or working commercial properties.
The table distinguishes the four sites most often mixed together in discussions of “abandoned Detroit factories.” “Detroit” refers to the city unless noted; Highland Park is a separate municipality immediately north of Detroit.

Fisher Body Plant 21: a vacant body plant with a housing proposal
Fisher Body Plant 21 stands at 6051 Hastings Street in Detroit. The City of Detroit describes the former automobile plant as 600,000 square feet on 4.7 acres. Construction dates to 1919, and the building has been vacant since 1993.
The National Park Service’s documentation identifies Plant No. 21 as a facility that opened in 1919 and produced bodies for Cadillac and Buick. That specialization matters: body plants were an essential part of the vertically organized auto industry, even though they did not assemble complete cars. Their large floor plates, heavy equipment, freight circulation, and industrial utilities also make later conversion technically and financially difficult.
What redevelopment is proposed
The City’s planning material describes a proposal to preserve and redevelop the structure as approximately 435 rental apartments plus 38,000 square feet of commercial space. At least 20 percent of the proposed units would be designated affordable under the income limit stated in the proposal. These are project targets, not a report that construction is complete or that residents have moved in.
Michigan’s environmental agency reported a 2024 grant supporting conversion of the property to housing. A grant can help address contamination, demolition, stabilization, or other preparation costs; it does not by itself establish a finished project, an opening date, or permission to enter the building.

Why “abandoned” needs a qualifier here
Plant 21 fits the everyday meaning of a long-vacant factory, but it is also an active planning subject. The building’s future depends on financing, approvals, structural work, environmental remediation, and a developer’s ability to execute the proposal. Treating it as a permanently abandoned ruin ignores that public redevelopment process.
Packard Plant: demolition, an announced reuse plan, and unresolved facts
The Packard property is the most difficult site to describe in a single present-tense sentence. City-led demolition has removed major portions. A City notice said a second major section was being demolished while the Grand Boulevard portion would remain and be marketed for redevelopment.
In December 2025, the City announced a proposed 28-acre adaptive-reuse project for the southern half of the site. The announcement shows an intended direction, not a completed redevelopment. A secondary Historic Detroit account later reported that the Packard Park plan collapsed in March 2026, but that report is not matched by definitive official confirmation in the available record.

There is no reliable, single inventory here that establishes exactly which Packard buildings remain, their structural condition, or which portions are controlled by which parties. Demolition notices, marketing language, and a later report of a collapsed plan describe different moments in a changing property. Until the City publishes a current status update, readers should treat the extent of surviving fabric and the future of the southern and Grand Boulevard sections as unresolved.

Can you visit the Packard Plant?
Do not interpret photographs, street views, or a redevelopment announcement as an invitation. A partially demolished industrial site can contain unstable floors, open shafts, asbestos, contaminated materials, active machinery, and construction operations. No current, general public-access authorization is established by the information available here. Anyone planning photography, a tour, or research should obtain written permission from the current owner or an officially identified operator and confirm conditions immediately before going.
Ford Piquette Avenue Plant: Detroit’s preserved early factory
The Ford Piquette Avenue Plant is often included in lists of “abandoned” factories because it is an old industrial building associated with the birth of mass automobile production. It should not be classified that way today. Ford moved production from Piquette to the Highland Park plant in January 1910. Studebaker bought the Piquette building in 1911 and continued automobile production there until 1933.
The building is now restored and operated year-round as a museum and education center by the nonprofit Model-T Automotive Heritage Complex. The operator describes the institution as self-supported and says it is not affiliated with Ford Motor Company or the Ford Foundation. That distinction is useful when interpreting exhibits, fundraising, and institutional claims: the museum is an independent heritage organization, not a corporate visitor center.

What a visit can and cannot tell you
Because the museum offers public programming, it is the appropriate place on this list for a general visitor seeking an interior view of an early Detroit auto plant. Exhibits can explain how production worked before the later Highland Park scale-up and why Piquette’s role ended when Ford needed a larger, more efficient facility. A museum visit does not provide access to the Packard, Fisher Body, or Highland Park sites; each has separate ownership, safety, and authorization questions.

Highland Park Ford Plant: the assembly-line milestone outside Detroit
The Highland Park Ford complex is in the city of Highland Park, Michigan, not Detroit proper. Ford’s corporate history records that vehicle production moved there from Piquette in 1910. The moving automobile assembly line first operated at Highland Park in October 1913, a change that transformed the speed and organization of Model T production.
Ford reports that employment at the complex reached almost 70,000 people at its 1925 peak. The company also describes production rising from hundreds of Model Ts per day to thousands per day after the moving line was introduced, without giving exact daily counts in that account. The resulting economies helped drive the Model T’s reported price reduction from $850 to $260; the cited history does not assign a separate year to each of those two figures.
Why it is misleading to call Highland Park abandoned
Ford sold the plant in October 1981, but Ford says it continues to lease space there for storage. A sold complex with continuing reported use is not the same thing as an abandoned one, even if portions appear quiet or inaccessible from public roads. The site’s historical importance and its present occupancy must be described separately.

How Detroit’s “abandoned factory” label creates confusion
Vacant is not the same as abandoned
Fisher Body Plant 21 has a documented vacancy period, yet it is the subject of a housing proposal. Vacancy describes use; abandonment implies a settled lack of stewardship or intended future. The former can be temporary or contested.
Demolition is not the same as total disappearance
Packard’s demolition activity has affected major portions, while the City has separately discussed retaining and marketing the Grand Boulevard section. A site can be partly cleared, partly standing, and still under negotiation.
A historic building is not necessarily an open ruin
Piquette is old and industrial, but it is restored and operated as a museum. Highland Park is historically central, but reported storage leasing means it should not be presented as unused. Age and fame are not evidence of abandonment.
Planning a responsible visit or research trip
- Choose a site with confirmed access. The Piquette museum is the only location in this group for which the operator’s public, year-round programming is established.
- Check the official status immediately before travel. For Packard, Fisher Body 21, and Highland Park, look for a current notice from the City, owner, or identified operator rather than relying on old photographs or map pins.
- Request permission in writing. Ask who controls the specific building or parcel, whether interior access is allowed, and what dates, escorts, insurance, or safety equipment are required.
- Stay outside restricted areas. Fences, posted notices, demolition zones, and construction barriers are boundaries, not suggestions. Do not enter through openings or assume an apparently empty structure is safe.
- Document the date and source of every status claim. Packard’s conflicting 2025 and 2026 accounts show why a site condition can change faster than a guidebook or social-media post.
What these factories still reveal about Detroit
Taken together, the sites show four stages of industrial history. Piquette represents early factory organization before Ford’s largest expansion. Highland Park demonstrates how the moving line and scale reshaped production, employment, and vehicle pricing. Fisher Body 21 shows the specialized body-making network that supported multiple marques and later left a large vacant industrial shell. Packard illustrates the uncertainty of a massive, fragmented property where demolition and reuse plans can overlap.
The “secrets” are therefore not just objects left behind. They are visible in building scale, production moves, labor concentration, ownership changes, and the difficult decisions required to preserve, reuse, or remove industrial land. Reading each site according to its documented status is more accurate—and safer—than treating every old factory as an abandoned adventure destination.
