Short answer: the Tesla Semi is worth a fleet inquiry only after your team validates route energy use, legal payload, Megacharger access, depot power, operating cost and delivery allocation. Tesla currently lists a 325-mile Standard Range and a 500-mile Long Range, but both are manufacturer estimates under tightly defined test conditions—not guarantees for every trailer, speed, season or load.
What Tesla currently lists
Tesla’s US Semi product page, accessed in October 2026, shows two configurations. Both are listed at 82,000 pounds gross combination weight, 1.7 kWh per mile of energy consumption, up to 800 kW of drive power and up to 25 kW of electric power takeoff (ePTO). The meaningful differences for a fleet are range and tractor curb weight.

| Configuration | Estimated range | Listed energy consumption | Tractor curb weight | Gross combination weight | Drive power | Fast-charging claim |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Range | 325 miles | 1.7 kWh/mi | <20,000 lb | 82,000 lb | Up to 800 kW | Up to 60% range in 30 minutes |
| Long Range | 500 miles | 1.7 kWh/mi | 23,000 lb | 82,000 lb | Up to 800 kW | Up to 60% range in 30 minutes |
These are Tesla specifications and estimates, not independently measured fleet results. The 1.7 kWh/mi figure comes from Tesla’s internal simulations under the same conditions used for the range estimate.
How to interpret the range estimate
Tesla states: “Range is estimated based on 82k lb gross combination weight, 55 mph, 20 C, on flat ground, with the tandem axle aero kit and a CARB compliant dry van semi-trailer.” That qualification is central to procurement. A faster dispatch, headwind, snow, extreme heat or cold, hills, a different trailer, heavier accessories, traffic, idling or a different payload can all change energy use.

The estimate also describes a complete tractor-and-trailer operating condition. It does not mean a lightly loaded tractor will always travel exactly 325 or 500 miles, nor does it establish a safe planning distance between chargers. Your engineering team should model a reserve appropriate to the route, weather and recovery options rather than planning to the displayed number.
Does the Semi fit your duty cycle?
Start with actual work records, not a brochure route. Build a representative data set for each lane or route that could use a Semi.
Route and reserve analysis
- Record loaded and empty miles, average and maximum speed, stops, grades, traffic and dwell time.
- Separate summer, winter and shoulder-season energy assumptions. Battery temperature and weather can materially affect charging and usable range.
- Set a reserve policy for unexpected congestion, detours, closed sites and charger queues. A route that barely fits the headline range is operationally fragile.
- Identify a confirmed charging location for every planned stop. An announced network expansion is not proof that a particular lane is covered.
- Check whether charging is available during normal driver breaks or loading windows instead of adding a new paid dwell period.
For each route, calculate the energy required between charging opportunities, then test that calculation against the truck’s available battery energy and your reserve rule. Ask Tesla for route-specific validation or demonstration data, but keep the fleet’s own telematics and weather analysis as the decision baseline.

Payload and axle limits
The 82,000-pound gross combination figure is not a payload rating. Payload is affected by tractor curb weight, trailer tare, refrigeration or lift equipment, battery and charging hardware, cargo distribution, axle limits and the rules in the jurisdictions where the truck operates.
On Tesla’s listed figures, the Long Range tractor is 23,000 pounds, while the Standard Range is listed below 20,000 pounds. That difference can reduce legal cargo capacity before trailer and equipment weights are considered. Do not estimate payload by subtracting tractor curb weight from 82,000 pounds and treating the remainder as cargo. Have your compliance team calculate axle loading for the exact tractor, trailer, fifth-wheel setting, cargo pattern and state or provincial rules.

Trailer and operating equipment
Tesla’s range condition includes a tandem-axle aerodynamic kit and a CARB-compliant dry-van semi-trailer. If your fleet uses reefers, flatbeds, tankers, curtainsiders, specialty bodies or nonstandard aerodynamic equipment, request a separate energy and payload assessment. Electric auxiliary loads matter as well; Tesla lists ePTO up to 25 kW, but the duty cycle of refrigeration, pumps or other equipment must be evaluated rather than assumed to be covered by the headline range.
Charging: what the claims mean in practice
Tesla says Megachargers can provide up to 1.2 megawatts and recover up to 60% of range in 30 minutes. “Up to” describes a maximum capability, not a guaranteed charging curve or a promise that every session will add the same miles. Tesla Support says the actual rate varies with battery level, temperature and whether another truck is charging at the same site.

A 30-minute stop may be adequate for one route and inadequate for another. Your model should include arrival state of charge, target state of charge, battery temperature, charger sharing, queue risk and the time required to position the trailer. Determine how many miles of your route are recovered during the planned dwell, not merely whether a session is advertised as 30 minutes.
Tesla says a driver can charge with a trailer attached, although most sites require backing into the stall. That maneuver can add time and may be difficult in a constrained yard or during peak periods. Conduct a site walk-through with the longest trailer combination you intend to operate.
Compatibility and account requirements
Tesla Support states: “No. Supercharger and Wall Connector are designed for passenger vehicles and are not compatible with Semi.” A passenger-car charging installation cannot be treated as a backup for this truck. Megacharging is the relevant system, and Tesla says its Megacharger sites currently support Tesla Semi trucks.

Semi VINs are added to a Tesla for Business account by Tesla after an order. The vehicle must be in that account to use Megacharging. Charging is billed monthly to the account. Site prices vary, can change with time of day or utilization, and the applicable session price is set when the truck plugs in.
Access, reservations and idle fees
- Megacharger stalls cannot be reserved, according to Tesla Support.
- Most locations are open 24 hours, but some have limited hours shown in the vehicle map.
- Idle fees begin after five waived minutes when the truck remains connected after charging is complete.
- Sites may have different trailer approaches, turning radii and queue behavior; verify each location rather than relying on a map pin alone.
For a depot, obtain a utility load study, service-upgrade schedule, transformer and switchgear requirements, construction estimate, demand-charge assumptions and time-of-use tariff. Size the site for simultaneous charging and the fleet’s dispatch peaks, not simply the nameplate rating of one charger. Confirm who owns and maintains the equipment, how outages are handled and whether expansion phases require new utility work.
Can your fleet meet the 2026 delivery outlook?
Tesla’s current US product page says, “Deliveries Start in 2026.” Tesla’s Q2 2026 investor update says, “Tesla Semi and Megapack 3 remain on schedule for production starting in 2026.” Those are company statements and outlooks, not a guaranteed date for an individual fleet.
The same update says deliveries and deployments depend on aggregate demand, supply-chain readiness and allocation between customer sales and Tesla’s own fleet. A fleet should obtain written confirmation of its order status, configuration, production slot, delivery window, deposits, cancellation rights and conditions that could move the date.
Earlier guidance provides context but should not be used as the current commitment. Tesla’s Q4 2024 update described Semi as being in pilot production, with first truck builds scheduled for the end of 2025 and ramp beginning in early 2026. The newer 2026 statement is the current company position. Tesla also cautions that installed capacity does not equal current production rate.

Questions to put in the purchase file
- What configuration, software, options and trailer assumptions are included in the quotation?
- What is the expected production and delivery window for your fleet size and region?
- Is allocation firm, provisional or subject to reallocation?
- What payment milestones, price-adjustment provisions and delivery remedies apply?
- Where will the trucks be serviced, and what parts and roadside response commitments are documented?
- What charging sites will be available to your account at delivery, and what are the current access and pricing terms?
Build a fleet-specific total-cost model
Tesla makes broad statements that electricity and maintenance can cost less than conventional trucks. Those statements do not establish savings for every fleet. A credible comparison uses your actual duty cycle and all costs over the evaluation period.
Energy cost
Use measured or conservatively modeled route consumption, not only the 1.7 kWh/mi listing. Apply the tariff at each depot and public site, including energy charges, demand charges, time-of-use periods, taxes and any session or idle fees. Model charging losses and the energy used while parked or running auxiliary equipment where relevant.
Infrastructure and construction
Include charger hardware, civil work, trenching, transformer and switchgear upgrades, utility studies, permits, networking, maintenance, land, security and backup capability. Separate one-time capital costs from recurring software, network and electricity charges. A low truck energy cost can be outweighed by an underutilized high-power installation.
Vehicle and operating costs
- Purchase price, financing rate, lease structure and residual-value assumption.
- Insurance, registration, taxes and applicable incentives or grants.
- Scheduled maintenance, tires, inspections, repairs and parts logistics.
- Driver labor during charging or repositioning, plus any changes in shift design.
- Downtime, spare-truck requirements and the cost of a missed delivery.
- Utilization, annual miles and the number of trucks sharing each charger.
Run sensitivity cases for lower utilization, higher electricity prices, construction delays, longer charging dwell, reduced payload and a delayed delivery. If the business case works only under Tesla’s best-case range, charging and delivery assumptions, it is not ready for approval.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Ask how a truck is handled when a charger is unavailable, a site is full, a connector faults or a vehicle arrives outside site hours. Document contingency routes and minimum state-of-charge rules. Decide whether the fleet needs a spare tractor during the launch period and budget that cost.
Training should cover high-voltage safety, charging etiquette, trailer backing, pre-trip inspection, software alerts, incident isolation and procedures for an interrupted session. Dispatchers need visibility into state of charge, charger status, dwell time and route restrictions. These controls matter as much as the truck’s advertised specifications.
A practical go/no-go process
- Segment the fleet. Select routes with predictable mileage, depot dwell and trailer types rather than attempting an entire fleet conversion at once.
- Collect baseline data. Export at least a representative season of miles, payload, speed, stops, fuel use, maintenance, labor and downtime for each segment.
- Match configurations. Compare the Standard Range and Long Range on reserve margin, curb-weight impact, payload, acquisition terms and route coverage.
- Validate charging. Confirm Megacharger locations, trailer access, hours, non-reservability, site pricing, idle-fee exposure and depot utility capacity.
- Obtain commercial terms. Request written delivery allocation, milestones, warranty and service commitments, charging-account setup and price assumptions.
- Model downside cases. Test weather, congestion, charger sharing, tariff increases, lower payload flexibility, construction delay and vehicle downtime.
- Run a controlled pilot. Use a limited number of routes with measurable targets for energy per mile, on-time performance, charging dwell, payload and maintenance events.
- Set expansion gates. Scale only if measured results meet the fleet’s reserve, service, cost and delivery requirements.
Questions a procurement committee should resolve
- What percentage of daily routes can finish with the required reserve using verified charging locations?
- How much legal payload remains after the chosen tractor, trailer and operating equipment are weighed?
- Can the depot receive the required electrical service before trucks arrive?
- What happens when a Megacharger is occupied, unavailable or outside operating hours?
- Which costs are fixed in the quote, and which vary by site, time or utilization?
- What delivery date and allocation language is contractual rather than an outlook?
- Who is responsible for service response, parts availability and downtime recovery?
- What measured pilot result will trigger expansion, pause or cancellation?
Bottom line
The Tesla Semi’s published numbers make it a plausible candidate for high-mileage, depot-centered work with predictable charging windows. The Standard Range is listed at 325 estimated miles and below 20,000 pounds curb weight; the Long Range is listed at 500 estimated miles and 23,000 pounds. Both list 1.7 kWh/mi and 82,000 pounds gross combination weight. None of those figures answers a fleet’s payload, route, tariff, uptime or delivery question by itself.
