Do not treat your winning bid as the final price. A motorcycle auction invoice can add a buyer’s premium, sales tax or VAT, title and documentation charges, import duty, bidder or platform fees, and removal or storage costs. Your total depends on the auction house, event, lot, location, buyer’s tax situation, and whether you bid in person, by phone, or online. Before bidding, read the current event conditions and the individual motorcycle’s lot terms, then calculate the amount payable rather than the bid amount alone.
The charges that can sit above the hammer price
The hammer price is the accepted winning bid. It is only one line on the final invoice. Auction terms may add some or all of the following:

This is a checklist, not a universal invoice. A particular sale may omit several items or add a charge not listed here. The lot page and event conditions control.
Why there is no single “motorcycle auction fee”
Premiums vary materially between auction houses, events, lot categories, jurisdictions, and bidding channels. A rate published for one sale cannot be used as a market-wide average. Even within one auction company, online and in-person bids can have different pricing.

For example, Mecum’s FAQ lists a 10% buyer’s premium for in-person bidding and 12% for telephone or internet bidding on collector cars and motorcycles. It also lists a $500 minimum buyer premium for motorcycles. The FAQ says bidder-registration fees vary by method and package. Those figures describe Mecum’s stated policy and still need to be checked against the particular event.

These figures come from different countries, dates, sale formats, and definitions. They are illustrations of variation, not numbers to combine into an “average.”

Percentage, tiers and minimums
Some auctions apply one percentage to the hammer price; others use tiers, such as one rate up to a threshold and another rate above it. A minimum can make a low-value motorcycle more expensive than a simple percentage suggests. Mecum’s $500 motorcycle minimum is an example: on a $3,000 hammer price, 10% would be $300, but the stated minimum would make the premium $500 before taxes or other charges.
Read whether the schedule is calculated on the entire hammer price or in progressive bands. Bonhams’ published schedule for the specified 2026 motorcycle-projects category uses a first-£40,000 tier and further tiers above it; do not apply that structure to a different category without a matching lot schedule.

Bidding channel can change the rate
Confirm the rate attached to the channel you will actually use. The same motorcycle may carry one premium for a room bid and another for a telephone or internet bid. Registration can also be priced separately by method or package. If you change from in-person bidding to an online account after registering, recheck the applicable terms rather than assuming the original rate follows you.
Reserve and accepted bids
A reserve affects whether a bid becomes a sale, but it does not make the premium disappear once the lot clears its reserve. Broad Arrow’s conditions describe the buyer’s payment obligation as the last accepted bid after the lot has cleared its reserve, the applicable buyer’s premium, and all applicable taxes, duties, expenses, and other disclosed fees.

Taxes, VAT and import charges
Sales tax or VAT may apply to more than the motorcycle
Ask specifically whether tax is charged on the hammer price, the buyer’s premium, or both. The answer can depend on the sale country, the motorcycle’s tax status, your destination, and whether you qualify for any treatment described in the terms. Do not assume that a “20% premium” is the only percentage on the invoice: RM Sotheby’s Munich example adds 19% non-reclaimable VAT on the premium in the circumstances stated by that event.
Buyer location and transaction details matter
An auction’s displayed price may not settle your tax liability if the motorcycle is shipped to another jurisdiction. The official schedules identify local taxes and import duties as the buyer’s responsibility where applicable. Ask the auction or a qualified customs and tax adviser how the charge is determined for your residence, delivery country, and intended registration.
Import duty and import VAT
Cross-border purchases can involve customs duty, import VAT, brokerage, and documentation requirements in addition to the auction invoice. Bonhams’ 2026 information uses lot symbols to flag possible import duty and import VAT for certain lots. Treat those symbols as a prompt to investigate the specific motorcycle, not as proof that every lot has the same liability. Obtain an estimate before bidding and identify who is responsible for filing and payment.

Title, documentation and registration fees
A motorcycle can incur a processing fee even when the sale price is settled. Confirm whether the auction transfers a title, provides a bill of sale only, or supplies another document, and whether the document is clear, salvage, rebuilt, export-only, or otherwise restricted. The fee may depend on the jurisdiction and title type.
Ritchie Bros.’ published schedule illustrates this location-based approach: for titled items in the US and Mexico it states a general $125 documentation fee, $70 in California, and $140 in Orlando, for events opening for bidding on or after August 1, 2026. Applicable taxes may be added, and the schedule lists different charges for other countries. Verify that the stated category includes the motorcycle you are considering and that the event uses the current schedule.
- Confirm the exact document you will receive and when it will be released.
- Ask whether a lien release, export certificate, or translated document is required.
- Check whether your registration authority accepts the title and inspection history.
- Budget for government registration, plate, inspection, and insurance costs separately; an auction documentation fee is not the same as those later charges.
Removal, storage and transport after you win
The invoice can grow after the sale if the motorcycle is not collected on time. Broad Arrow’s conditions expressly include potential removal and storage expenses among amounts the buyer must pay when disclosed. Other auctions may set a free pickup window and then charge daily storage, handling, or relocation fees.
- Read the pickup location, opening hours, and deadline before bidding.
- Ask when storage starts and what the daily or per-incident rate is.
- Confirm whether the auction requires proof of insurance, a loading appointment, or a professional carrier.
- Get a separate transport quote based on the motorcycle’s actual location, size, running condition, and destination.
- Keep the collection receipt and condition report until the title and motorcycle are safely delivered.
Do not treat transport as included unless the event terms state that it is. A low hammer price can be offset by a long-distance collection, crating, border paperwork, or storage caused by a missed deadline.
How to calculate your maximum bid
Use the invoice amount you can afford as the ceiling, then work backward to a bid. The exact formula changes with the auction’s tax rules, so use the following process for each lot:

- Identify the event and lot. Save the current conditions, the lot page, fee schedule, tax notes, and any symbols or special terms.
- Set your all-in budget. Include the motorcycle, inspection, transport, registration, and a reserve for charges that depend on jurisdiction or final handling.
- Choose the bidding channel. Record the premium and registration fee for in-person, telephone, or internet bidding.
- Calculate the premium. Apply the correct tier and minimum to your proposed hammer price.
- Add taxes. Determine whether sales tax or VAT is applied to the hammer price, the premium, or both.
- Add fixed charges. Include title or documentation, platform, import, and disclosed removal or storage fees.
- Price transport separately. Confirm the collection deadline and obtain a realistic quote.
- Reduce the bid ceiling. Do not bid the full amount available for the invoice; retain the buffer for variable charges.
Worked arithmetic example (not a market estimate)
Suppose, purely for arithmetic, that an event lists a $10,000 hammer price, a 10% buyer’s premium, and 19% VAT charged only on the premium. The calculation would be:

This example does not predict any auction’s invoice. It excludes possible tax on the hammer price, documentation, registration, import, storage, and transport. If a schedule has a minimum premium or different tax base, the arithmetic changes.

Compare the complete transaction, not just the headline premium. Put both sales on the same worksheet and fill in the actual motorcycle location and your delivery destination.

Comparing a 10% in-person premium at one event with a 20% premium plus VAT at another is incomplete unless you also compare taxes, documents, distance, and collection terms.
Inspection and condition risks that affect your real cost
Fees are only one part of the budget. Mecum’s FAQ advises, “Mecum recommends inspecting the vehicle or item before bidding.” Treat that as a risk-control step, not a guarantee that the motorcycle will be trouble-free. Verify the VIN, title status, odometer disclosure, starting and running condition, missing parts, accident or flood history, and any buyer’s inspection deadline. A motorcycle sold as non-running may require specialist loading and a larger transport budget.

- Ask whether the auction’s photographs and description are representations or estimates.
- Check whether the motorcycle has a reserve and whether the bid is binding once accepted.
- Confirm what “as-is,” “where-is,” or similar language excludes from a claim.
- Budget for diagnosis, tires, fluids, battery, brakes, and transport equipment without assuming any of those costs are covered by the auction.
Common fee mistakes and how to prevent them
Using a premium from another auction
Fix: Use only the current event schedule and lot terms. Published examples from RM Sotheby’s, Mecum, Bonhams, Broad Arrow, and Ritchie Bros. prove that rates and fee types differ; they do not establish a standard industry rate.
Ignoring the bidding channel
Fix: Register through the intended channel and save the confirmation showing the applicable premium and registration charge.
Assuming VAT or sales tax applies only to the motorcycle
Fix: Ask which invoice lines are taxable and whether your destination changes the result.

Fix: Obtain the document description, customs responsibility, and an estimated duty or import-VAT treatment before bidding.
Missing the pickup deadline
Fix: Arrange a carrier in advance, confirm the auction’s hours, and put the free-collection deadline on your calendar.
Bidding up to the cash you have available
Fix: Reserve money for variable tax, documentation, transport, and storage costs. Your maximum bid should be below your maximum invoice budget.
Questions to ask the auction before placing a bid
- What is the buyer’s premium for this motorcycle and my chosen bidding method?
- Is there a motorcycle-specific minimum or a tiered rate?
- Are sales tax or VAT charged on the hammer price, the premium, or both?
- Which title, export, registration, or documentation fee applies to this lot?
- Could import duty, import VAT, brokerage, or another customs charge apply to my destination?
- What registration or platform fee will appear on my account?
- Where and when can the motorcycle be collected, and when do storage charges begin?
- Is the motorcycle sold with a clear title, and can I inspect the VIN and documents before bidding?
- When must payment be received, and what payment methods are accepted?
Bottom line for your bidding budget
Start with the hammer price, but make your decision from the all-in figure. Apply the event’s exact premium, minimum, and bidding-method rule; add the applicable tax or VAT; verify title, documentation, import, registration, removal, and storage charges; then obtain a separate transport estimate. Because no universal motorcycle premium exists, the only reliable fee schedule is the current one for the specific auction and lot. The cited official schedules were accessed October 13, 2026, and fees can change, so recheck them immediately before bidding.
