For a farmer considering a pickup, it can be a practical road-travel option if compatible fuel is available on regular routes and its local price offsets the truck’s lower miles per gallon on E85. It does not make a gasoline pickup suitable for E85 unless that exact vehicle is an FFV, and it is not a substitute for diesel farm equipment.
What is a flex-fuel vehicle?
An FFV is built with fuel-system components and engine calibration designed to handle gasoline and ethanol-gasoline blends from E0 through E85. That can include ethanol-compatible parts such as the fuel pump and injection system. The designation is specific to the vehicle’s configuration; the same model name may cover both flex-fuel and gasoline-only versions. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Flexible Fuel Vehicles guide explains the design and availability context.
E85 is not necessarily 85% ethanol. The Department of Energy defines it as a blend containing 51% to 83% ethanol, with the actual proportion varying by season and geography. Colder-weather blends may contain less ethanol to support starting. See the DOE’s E85 guidance and E85 fuel specification.
Can you put E85 in your truck?
Only if the exact truck is a flex-fuel vehicle. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states: “E85 can only be used in flex fuel vehicles (FFVs) which are specifically designed to run on this fuel or any gasoline or ethanol blend ranging from E0 to E85.” The EPA’s E85 Fuel page was updated April 16, 2026.

- Test your fuel for proper ethanol levels to ensure it does not damage your engine. Test kit also tests for e85.
- Simple test to discover the percentage of ethanol alcohol in gasoline. With readings of e10, e15, e20, e25, e80, e85 and e90
- High levels of ethanol could damage your fuel system and lower your fuel mileage.
- Ethanol can damage motors not equipped or designed to use it, test your gasoline first.
- Easy to read label and instructions that is laminated to prevent fading or the ink rubbing off. Testing bottle can be reused over and over.
Do not infer compatibility from the make, model, engine size, a yellow fuel cap, or the fact that the truck already uses gasoline containing ethanol. The DOE says more than 98% of U.S. gasoline contains ethanol, but that background fact does not mean a gasoline-only vehicle can use E85. Check the exact vehicle’s fuel label, owner’s manual, and official vehicle information before filling up.
How do you know if your truck is flex fuel?
- Check the fuel door and nearby labels. Look for an FFV or E85 designation, but confirm it against the manual rather than relying on appearance alone.
- Read the owner’s manual for the exact year and configuration. It should specify which fuels and ethanol blends are permitted.
- Verify the vehicle identification details with an official source. Confirm the model year, engine, drivetrain, and FFV status; a trim or model name by itself is not enough.
- If documentation conflicts or is unclear, use gasoline until compatibility is confirmed. Do not treat a conversion kit or a previous owner’s modification as proof that the vehicle is approved for E85.
Is E85 cheaper than regular gasoline?
The pump price alone does not answer that: E85 generally delivers fewer miles per gallon, and the effect depends on its ethanol content. DOE says E85 at 83% ethanol has about 27% less energy per gallon than gasoline; blends with less ethanol have a smaller energy difference. That does not translate into a universal MPG loss for every truck or every fill-up. Compare the exact vehicle’s expected fuel economy and local prices.

- 【Protect Your Engine】This ethanol tester E85 can get the ethanol level in gasoline and E85 pump gas in just 5 minutes, testing the fuel's ethanol content at peak levels to make sure it won't damage your engine.【Please note】The lid is designed with a self release safety point. Simply twist the lid until you feel slight resistance, then stop. This ensures a secure fit without loosening
- 【Reduce Spills】The wide mouth style of gasoline fuel test bottle is designed to reduce spills and prevent leaks by making it easy to pour gasoline and water into the bottle for testing without the use of a funnel, preventing gasoline from getting on your hands
- 【Test Procedure】Only three simple tests are required to find the percentage of ethanol in gasoline/E85 pump gas; First add water to the blue water line, then pour gasoline to the red gasoline line, then tighten the cap, shake the ethanol tester E85 for 5 seconds, and let it rest on a flat surface for 5 minutes; The gasoline and water will separate to provide a clear result
- 【Reusable and Durable】The E85 Fuel Test Kit is made of high density material, which is durable and corrosion resistant, allowing you to measure ethanol or E85 in gasoline hundreds of times
- 【Easy To Read Percentages】Fade and wipe proof instructions are screen printed for long lasting durability and legibility, and the transparent bottle helps to visualize the testing process
Use realistic annual mileage, the exact truck’s gasoline and E85 economy, and the share of miles you expect to drive on each fuel. Include extra miles or time for a station detour if they matter to your operation. The DOE’s Vehicle Cost Calculator can support cost comparisons; its result depends on the inputs you provide. These calculations are a way to compare scenarios, not a promise that E85 saves money.
Where can farmers find E85?
E85 access is much more limited than gasoline access. The DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center reports more than 4,200 public E85 stations in 44 states; station counts can change, so check current availability before relying on a route. Its E85 page also reports more than 20.9 million FFVs on U.S. roads as of 2022.

Obtain precise readings within 5 minutes to verify fuel ethanol levels, safeguarding your engine's peak performance through optimal fuel quality control.
Search stations along the routes you actually drive—between the farm, suppliers, markets, and town—rather than judging access by a statewide count. The DOE’s Ethanol Fueling Stations locator can help with route planning. Consider whether the station is convenient at the times you travel and whether you can continue using gasoline when E85 is unavailable; FFVs can run on gasoline as well as approved ethanol blends.

- Used to test the percentage of alcohol in fuel for your boat
- Ethanol content in fuel can be harmful to engines and components
- Easy to use to check your fuel supply and avoid the use of fuel with ethanol content
- Match the vehicle to the job. Check the manufacturer’s payload and towing specifications for the exact configuration and compare them with your loads and trailers.
- Compare real purchase and operating costs. Use the price of the specific truck, local fuel prices, fuel economy on each fuel, and the cost of any station detours.
- Account for your route and season. A station that is convenient for town trips may not be practical on other routes; seasonal E85 blends also vary.
- Keep the vehicle category clear. FFV capability concerns gasoline vehicles. It does not make a gasoline pickup a diesel vehicle or establish suitability for tractors or other farm equipment.
DOE’s Model Year 2025 vehicle table lists one specific example: a Chevrolet Silverado 4WD with a 5.3L V8 identified as an FFV, at 17 MPG on gasoline, 12 MPG on E85, and a $41,400 base MSRP. These are DOE table figures for that model-year configuration, not a current transaction quote or specifications for every Silverado trim or later model year. Check the DOE vehicle table and the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact truck you are considering.
Should you convert a gasoline-only vehicle?
Do not assume a conventional gasoline vehicle can safely or legally be converted for E85 by fitting a generic kit. DOE says conversions are unusual and only a few kits are EPA-certified. EPA explains that conversion systems must demonstrate that emissions controls continue to function and that pollution does not increase under applicable certification requirements. Check the applicable EPA system listing and the specific vehicle details before considering a conversion; the available guidance does not establish that any particular conversion is approved for your vehicle. DOE provides information on vehicle conversions, and EPA explains compliance for alternative-fuel conversion systems.
