You need a vehicle approved for bidirectional home power, a compatible bidirectional charger, and a home integration device that disconnects the house from the utility grid and directs vehicle power to permitted circuits. The exact equipment is an ecosystem: components must be approved for your vehicle model, model year, software, region, electrical service and utility requirements.
A vehicle outlet or vehicle-to-load (V2L) adapter can run individual appliances, but it is not a safe connection to a residence. A qualified electrician must install and commission the V2H equipment, with permits and any required utility approvals.

What a complete V2H system contains
Every installation performs four jobs: it transfers energy between the vehicle and the house, converts battery electricity into usable household AC power, isolates the home from the utility during an outage, and controls which loads receive power. Manufacturers package those jobs differently, so a component name alone does not establish compatibility.
1. A V2H-capable vehicle
Start with the vehicle, not the charger. The vehicle must support bidirectional home power; having an EV charge port, a large battery or an onboard AC outlet is not enough. Confirm the exact make, model, model year, software version and U.S. market eligibility with the manufacturer. Eligibility can change between trims and model years.

2. A matched bidirectional charger
The EVSE must be approved to move energy in both directions and to communicate with the vehicle and home controls. A conventional one-way Level 2 charger can charge the battery but cannot discharge it into a residence. Use the charger specified for your vehicle ecosystem rather than assuming that another brand’s bidirectional unit will work.
3. Home integration and grid-isolation equipment
A home hub, gateway or microgrid-interconnect device opens the utility connection when grid power fails. This anti-islanding function prevents backup electricity from energizing utility lines and protects line workers. The same equipment routes power to the whole home or to selected backup circuits, depending on the design.
4. Inverter and auxiliary backup hardware
The traction battery stores direct-current (DC) energy. An inverter converts and regulates that energy into alternating-current (AC) power for household loads. Some systems also need a small dark-start battery or equivalent control power so the equipment can communicate and start during an outage.

5. Electrical installation and approvals
Expect panel work, protection devices, wiring, commissioning and possibly a service upgrade. Your installer must verify conductor sizing, grounding, load calculations, transfer behavior and the location of the vehicle equipment. Permits and utility interconnection rules vary by jurisdiction.

Documented equipment paths by vehicle ecosystem
The following examples show why V2H is not a universal shopping list. They describe manufacturer-documented U.S. configurations; verify current eligibility before ordering.

Ford F-150 Lightning
Ford’s 2025 F-150 Lightning owner manual identifies two required components for its described home-backup system: the Charge Station Pro and the Home Integration System. The Home Integration System is not included with the vehicle. The manual’s operating sequence assumes the truck is paired with the Charge Station Pro, connected to it, and that the home has lost grid power.
A separate meter-connected outage product reported by the Associated Press is not the same as Ford’s bidirectional Home Integration System. That report described the alternative as outage-only and gave an approximately $1,100 starting figure at the time of publication. Treat that amount as dated reporting, not a current quote or the price of a Lightning V2H installation.

GM Energy
GM’s documented arrangement combines a compatible bidirectional GM EV, the GM Energy PowerShift Charger and the GM Energy V2H Enablement Kit. The kit’s Home Hub disconnects the residence from the local grid during an outage. Its inverter converts and regulates vehicle battery power, while the Dark Start Battery supplies control power needed to communicate and start the system when utility power is unavailable.

In user guide version 1.2, GM lists 19.2 kW maximum charging power and 9.6 kW maximum discharge power to the home. Charging power is how quickly the vehicle can refill; discharge power is the ceiling for supplying household loads. They cannot be treated as one combined output rating. The guide warns that some appliances, utilities or circuits may not operate during an outage.
GM’s five-day example for a 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV Max Range assumes household consumption of up to 30 kWh per day and states that results vary. It is a conditional manufacturer example, not a guaranteed duration for every home.
Tesla Powershare
Tesla’s U.S. support documentation lists a configuration-dependent path. Without Powerwall, it lists a Cybertruck, Powershare Gateway and Universal Wall Connector. A home that already has Powerwall follows a different equipment and system-pairing path. Do not buy one component in isolation until Tesla confirms that your vehicle and home configuration are supported.

- Grid failure is detected. The home integration device or gateway senses loss of utility power.
- The home is isolated. A transfer or interconnection device opens the utility connection so backup power cannot flow onto distribution lines.
- The system starts. A dark-start battery or equivalent control circuit powers communications and startup where the design requires it.
- The vehicle supplies DC energy. The bidirectional charger and vehicle exchange control signals and authorize discharge.
- The inverter produces household AC. It regulates voltage and frequency for the connected loads.
- Loads are managed. The panel or backup controller supplies whole-home or selected circuits within the system’s continuous and surge limits.
When utility service returns, the equipment must resynchronize and reconnect according to its programmed sequence. Commissioning should verify both outage and restoration behavior; never test by improvising a connection to a wall outlet or service panel.

V2H versus V2L: the safety-critical distinction

Chevrolet specifically distinguishes V2L from V2H and warns owners not to connect vehicle or accessory outlets to a home. Use the manufacturer’s V2H system and installation procedure. Backfeeding through a receptacle, extension cord or improvised panel connection can electrocute workers, damage equipment and violate electrical codes.

Continuous output and starting surge
Size the system for continuous demand and brief motor-starting surges. Refrigerators, pumps, compressors and well equipment can draw more power when starting than their running labels indicate. A system with a 9.6 kW maximum discharge rating, for example, still may need load management to start several motors simultaneously.
Whole-home or selected circuits
Whole-home backup requires the service equipment and controller to handle the home’s calculated load. Selected-circuit backup places only priority loads—such as refrigeration, lighting, communications, heating controls or a sump pump—behind the backup equipment. The manufacturer guide, panel design and local code determine which approach is permitted.

Energy capacity and daily use
Runtime depends on usable vehicle battery energy, starting state of charge, temperature, conversion losses and household consumption. A household using more energy will run out sooner. A five-day estimate based on 30 kWh per day is therefore a scenario, not a promise. Keep the vehicle’s state-of-charge reserve and emergency driving needs in the plan.

Installation checklist before you buy
- Record the vehicle’s exact model, trim, model year, software status and market.
- List the proposed charger, home hub or gateway, inverter and any dark-start component, and verify that the manufacturer approves them as one system.
- Document your electrical service rating, main-panel condition, available breaker spaces and the circuits you want backed up.
- Note existing solar, stationary batteries, generators, smart panels and meter equipment. These can change the permitted topology.
- Ask a qualified installer for a load calculation that includes motor-starting currents and the desired backup circuits.
- Confirm permit, inspection and utility-interconnection requirements before equipment is ordered.
- Request written commissioning and outage-restoration tests, warranty terms, maintenance requirements and emergency operating instructions.
How to compare V2H options

Common mistakes and recovery steps
Buying a standard charger
Symptom: The vehicle charges normally but cannot export energy. Fix: Verify that the charger is bidirectional and listed for the exact vehicle and home system.
Assuming an outlet equals V2H
Symptom: A V2L adapter powers a tool but there is no approved path to the panel. Fix: Use it only for individual devices, or install the complete manufacturer V2H equipment with grid isolation.
Expecting every appliance to run
Symptom: The backup system trips or sheds loads when pumps, heaters or compressors start. Fix: Recalculate continuous and surge demand, prioritize circuits and add approved load management where available.

Symptom: Solar, Powerwall-type storage or a panel upgrade conflicts with the backup controller. Fix: Have the installer redesign the topology and obtain any required utility approval before energizing the system.
What to ask the installer
- Is my exact vehicle and software version approved for V2H in this location?
- Which charger, inverter, hub, gateway and auxiliary battery are required, and which are optional?
- Will the design back up the whole home or only named circuits?
- What are the continuous discharge and surge limits at my panel?
- How will the system isolate and reconnect to the utility grid?
- What permits, inspections and utility notifications are required?
- How will existing solar, storage or a generator interact with the system?
- What tests will you perform, and what should I do if the vehicle is away or its battery is low?
Bottom line for choosing equipment
Choose the vehicle ecosystem first, then buy its complete, approved hardware package: bidirectional charger, home integration or gateway equipment, inverter and any required dark-start component. Have a qualified installer verify panel capacity, backup circuits, permits and utility rules. Treat V2L outlets as appliance power only, and treat runtime and appliance coverage as conditional on battery state, system output and household demand.
