“Absolutely hard core” was Elon Musk’s call for headcount and cost reduction—not a published final count of Tesla job cuts. The phrase appeared in a reported internal email as Tesla faced a second wave of layoffs affecting named teams, including its Supercharger organization. The reported figure of roughly 500 Supercharger-group workers was an estimate, and the available reporting does not establish a verified total for all later cuts.
What Musk meant by “absolutely hard core”
In an internal email to senior executives reported by The Information, Tesla CEO Elon Musk wrote: “We need to be absolutely hard core about headcount and cost reduction.” The statement framed the cuts as part of a drive to reduce staffing and costs; it did not disclose a complete tally of the workers who would ultimately leave. The Verge’s April 30, 2024 report covered the email and the additional team-specific cuts.
How the later cuts differed from Tesla’s company-wide reduction
| Event | Timing and scope | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Company-wide restructuring | Announced April 15, 2024; global workforce | Tesla’s SEC filing said the company announced a restructuring that would reduce headcount by more than 10% globally. Tesla’s filing does not state that exactly 14,000 layoffs had been completed. |
| Later team-specific cuts | Reported April 30, 2024; named leaders and teams | The Information reported planned departures and cuts in particular organizations, including roughly 500 people in the Supercharger group. That estimate was attributed to Musk’s reported email, not independently confirmed as a final tally. Reuters relayed the report. |
The two developments should not be treated as one confirmed count: the April 15 announcement set a global reduction threshold, while the later reports described intended cuts to specific teams.
Which Tesla leaders and teams were reported to be affected?
Rebecca Tinucci and the Supercharger organization
The Information reported that Rebecca Tinucci, senior director of Tesla’s Supercharger group, would leave and that roughly 500 people in her organization were slated for layoffs. The number describes a reported estimate for that group, not all Tesla employees affected by the later cuts.

On May 1, the Associated Press reported that Tesla’s charging organization had been eliminated. Former Tesla charging real-estate leader Lane Chaplin said, “Unfortunately the charging organization at Tesla is no more.” The AP report adds contemporaneous context, but does not provide an audited total for all people who lost jobs.
Daniel Ho and new vehicles
The Information also reported that Daniel Ho, head of new vehicles, would leave. The available reports identify his planned departure but do not establish a separate headcount figure for his organization or detail Tesla’s specific rationale for the decision.

How many Tesla employees were laid off in 2024?
Tesla reported 140,473 employees at the end of 2023. The Associated Press used that workforce base to explain that a reduction of about 10% would imply roughly 14,000 potentially affected workers. That is an approximate calculation, not Tesla’s reported count of completed layoffs; the company’s filing said “more than 10%,” and the later team-specific reports do not establish a final total. The AP’s coverage of the broader reduction provides the workforce figure and estimate.

After the charging-team news, Musk said Tesla would continue building some Superchargers, but at a slower pace for new locations and with more focus on uptime and expanding existing sites. The Associated Press reported his stated plan on May 1, 2024: “just at a slower pace for new locations and more focus on 100% uptime and expansion of existing locations.” That contemporaneous statement describes his intention at the time; it does not establish what Tesla subsequently implemented.
