Where the original Citroën DS came from
A project that began in 1938
The roots of the DS reach back to work started under Citroën director Pierre Boulanger in 1938. The project was intended to produce a successor to the Traction Avant, but development continued through the disruption of the Second World War and the post-war period. The eventual car was not simply a styling exercise; it represented a long-running effort to rethink what a large passenger car could be.

When did DS become a separate brand?

Calling DS “independent from Citroën” without that qualification would overstate the separation. Calling every DS simply a Citroën would understate the 2014 change in brand identity. Both statements miss part of the picture.
