Rock-Trac is the Wrangler Rubicon’s low-range-focused four-wheel-drive system. Its 4:1 low gear ratio lets the vehicle move more slowly while multiplying torque at the wheels, giving the driver finer control on steep, rocky or otherwise difficult terrain. Rubicons may use either part-time or full-time Rock-Trac, so the available modes and the surfaces appropriate for each mode depend on the vehicle’s year and equipment.
What Rock-Trac does in practical terms
Rock-Trac is the four-wheel-drive system fitted to the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Its defining feature is a transfer-case low range with a 4:1 gear ratio. Selecting low range reduces the vehicle’s wheel speed relative to engine speed and increases torque delivered through the drivetrain to the wheels.

That combination is useful when a Rubicon needs to cross an obstacle slowly and deliberately. Instead of relying on momentum, the driver can make small throttle and steering inputs while the drivetrain supplies more turning force at the wheels. The result is better control for rock steps, ruts, ledges, loose climbs and descents where a normal high-range setting may make the vehicle travel too quickly.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLow range does not create traction by itself. Tire contact, the surface, suspension movement, throttle control and the vehicle’s other traction systems still determine whether the tires can use the available torque. Rock-Trac gives the driver a more suitable speed-and-torque range; it cannot make a tire grip a surface that it cannot hold.

How the 4:1 low range works
Speed is traded for wheel torque
A transfer-case ratio of 4:1 means the engine and transmission turn four times for roughly one revolution at the transfer-case output in low range, before the axle gearing is considered. In exchange for the lower output speed, the drivetrain applies a greater torque multiplication at the wheels.
For an off-road driver, the important effect is not the arithmetic but the control. The Rubicon can creep over an obstacle at a very low ground speed without requiring the driver to slip the clutch constantly in a manual vehicle or ride the brakes continuously on a descent. The vehicle can also approach a step with less momentum, reducing the chance of bouncing or striking the obstacle at speed.
What low range cannot do
- It does not guarantee that all four tires will have equal grip.
- It does not replace appropriate tires, safe line choice or recovery planning.
- It does not make high-speed driving safer; low range is intended for controlled, low-speed work.
- It does not mean every Rubicon has identical gearing or the same drive modes.
Part-time and full-time Rock-Trac are different
Jeep offers Rock-Trac in part-time and full-time forms, and the standard or available version varies by model and configuration. Treat the transfer-case controls in the specific Wrangler—not the Rubicon name alone—as the authority for what your vehicle can select.

| Rock-Trac configuration | Drive-mode distinction | Jeep’s surface-use guidance | What the driver should verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part-time | Requires the driver to select the appropriate four-wheel-drive mode; it does not add 4Hi Auto. | Intended for loose or slippery surfaces rather than ordinary high-traction road driving. | Read the owner’s manual for the exact model year and follow its instructions for shifting and speed limits. |
| Full-time | Includes the same basic four-drive-mode set plus 4Hi Auto. | Designed for constant use across surfaces, according to Jeep. | Confirm that the vehicle actually has full-time Rock-Trac and identify the mode labels in the cabin. |
The distinction matters because a part-time system locks the front and rear driveline relationship more directly when four-wheel drive is selected. On a high-grip surface, that can create driveline wind-up as the axles try to rotate at slightly different speeds while cornering. Jeep therefore distinguishes the surfaces for which part-time four-wheel drive is intended. Full-time Rock-Trac is designed to remain engaged across changing surfaces, while its Auto mode can vary torque distribution as traction needs change.

What 4Hi Auto adds on full-time Rock-Trac
Jeep describes 4Hi Auto as an additional mode in the full-time system. In that setting, the system manages torque distribution between the front and rear axles according to traction needs. It is intended for conditions that can alternate between good grip and reduced grip, such as a paved route with wet, snowy or loose sections.
4Hi Auto is not the same as low range. It is a high-range operating mode that adds automatic management of the front/rear torque split. Low range remains the setting for deliberate, very slow obstacle work. A full-time Rubicon therefore has both an automatic high-range option for changing surfaces and a low-range option for maximum control at crawling speed.
Jeep’s published description of the full-time system is: “The Rock-Trac® 4×4 Full-Time System provides the same four drive modes described above, but adds a 4Hi Auto Mode.” The exact labels and shift procedure can vary with model year and transmission, so use the manual supplied with the vehicle.

High-range four-wheel drive
A high-range four-wheel-drive setting connects the front axle for situations such as loose gravel, sand, mud or snow when the manual permits its use. On a part-time system, do not assume this is appropriate for dry, high-grip pavement simply because the vehicle is moving normally.
4Hi Auto
Only full-time Rock-Trac includes 4Hi Auto. It is the mode to consider when the surface can change repeatedly and automatic front/rear torque management is useful. It does not provide the speed reduction of low range.
Low range
Low range is for slow, controlled travel where wheel torque and precise speed matter more than road speed. Typical examples include climbing or descending steep grades, negotiating rock ledges, easing through deep ruts and controlling a vehicle over uneven ground.
The 100:1 crawl-ratio claim is conditional
Jeep advertises an available 100:1 crawl ratio for the Wrangler Rubicon, but that figure is not a universal specification for every Rubicon. Jeep ties the claim to two conditions: a manual transmission and the available 4.88:1 axle ratio.

| Claim | Required configuration | How to state it accurately |
|---|---|---|
| 100:1 crawl ratio | Manual transmission plus the available 4.88:1 axle ratio | An available Rubicon configuration can reach 100:1; the figure is not standard across all Rubicons. |
| 4:1 Rock-Trac low range | Rock-Trac-equipped Rubicon | The transfer-case low-range ratio that enables slower movement and greater wheel torque. |
A crawl ratio is the combined reduction from the transmission’s selected gear, the transfer case and the axle gearing. That is why transmission choice and axle ratio must accompany the 100:1 number. Two Rubicons can carry the same Rock-Trac name yet have different overall crawl ratios if their transmissions or axle ratios differ.
What you should check before using Rock-Trac
- Identify the system. Check the window sticker, build information and owner’s manual to determine whether the Wrangler has part-time or full-time Rock-Trac.
- Read the mode labels. Confirm whether 4Hi Auto appears among the selectable modes. Its presence indicates the full-time variant described by Jeep.
- Match the mode to the surface. Follow the manual’s guidance for when part-time four-wheel drive may be used and reserve low range for controlled, low-speed work.
- Shift exactly as specified. The correct procedure, vehicle speed and transmission position are model- and year-dependent. Do not apply a generic shift sequence to every Wrangler.
- Verify the configuration behind any crawl-ratio figure. If a specification sheet claims 100:1, confirm that the vehicle has both the manual transmission and available 4.88:1 axle ratio.
- Watch the indicators. Before tackling an obstacle, confirm that the requested mode has engaged on the instrument panel and that no warning message is present.
How Rock-Trac changes off-road technique
Approaching a ledge
Low range lets the driver approach at a slower, more predictable speed. That makes it easier to place a tire on the intended line and to pause between inputs rather than carrying speed into the ledge. The available wheel torque can help the vehicle climb without a large throttle application, but the tire still needs enough contact and grip to continue forward.
Descending a steep section
The lower gearing can keep the vehicle moving slowly with less dependence on service-brake pressure. Select the mode and gear specified by the manual, then maintain a line that avoids sudden steering changes. Low range is a control aid, not a substitute for judging slope, surface and rollover risk.

Extra wheel torque can help maintain progress when the vehicle encounters changing resistance. Smooth throttle matters: abrupt inputs can spin a tire, consume the available grip and leave the vehicle less able to climb out of a rut.

Common misunderstandings
“Rubicon” does not identify one identical drivetrain
Equipment availability varies by model year and configuration. A Rubicon badge does not, by itself, tell you whether the vehicle has part-time or full-time Rock-Trac, which transmission is installed or whether the 4.88:1 axle ratio is present.
4Hi Auto is not on every Rock-Trac system
Jeep identifies 4Hi Auto as the additional mode in full-time Rock-Trac. If the control layout does not provide that mode, do not assume the vehicle can perform the same automatic torque-management function.
A low gear does not equal unlimited pulling power
The 4:1 reduction increases torque multiplication, but the engine, transmission, axles, tires and surface still impose limits. Excessive throttle can damage components or break traction, especially when a tire suddenly regains grip.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The 100:1 figure is not a universal Rubicon rating
It applies to the specified manual-transmission and 4.88:1-axle configuration. Quote it with both conditions or leave it out when the vehicle’s equipment is unknown.
Which Rock-Trac variant is right for a given use?
- Frequent pavement driving with occasional changing weather: Full-time Rock-Trac’s 4Hi Auto can suit routes where traction conditions vary, subject to the manual’s instructions.
- Dedicated trail use on loose or slippery surfaces: Part-time Rock-Trac provides selectable four-wheel-drive modes, with the driver responsible for engaging the appropriate setting.
- Technical rock crawling: Both variants retain the 4:1 low-range feature; the decisive factors are the vehicle’s complete gearing, tires, clearance, driver technique and terrain.
- Comparing two used Rubicons: Verify the transfer-case variant, transmission and axle ratio rather than relying on trim names or seller descriptions.
Bottom line for a Rubicon owner
Rock-Trac’s purpose is controlled, torque-rich four-wheel-drive operation. The 4:1 low range lets a Rubicon crawl more slowly while increasing wheel torque, which is why it is valuable on difficult obstacles. Full-time versions add 4Hi Auto for automatic front/rear torque management across changing surfaces; part-time versions require more deliberate driver selection and are intended for loose or slippery conditions rather than routine high-grip-road use. Confirm the exact system and shifting instructions in the owner’s manual, and treat Jeep’s 100:1 crawl-ratio figure as an available configuration claim that requires both a manual transmission and the 4.88:1 axle ratio.
