How to tell whether a Toyota transmission is actually a CVT
Use Toyota’s specific transmission name for the model year, grade and powertrain you are considering. A manual is distinct from a CVT. A multi-speed automatic, such as an eight- or 10-speed unit, is a stepped automatic. A CVT varies its ratio continuously, and Toyota may describe a hybrid system as an eCVT. The word “automatic” alone is not enough to determine which kind is fitted.

For contrast, Toyota says 2026 Corolla gas models use a Dynamic Shift continuously variable transmission. Toyota describes the 2026 Camry’s unit as an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT).
