What Does “RAB Off” Mean on a Subaru—and How Do You Turn It Back On?

“RAB OFF” on a Subaru means Reverse Automatic Braking is disabled or temporarily unavailable. Here’s how to turn it back on, why it may be grayed out, and when service is needed.

“RAB OFF” means your Subaru’s Reverse Automatic Braking system is either switched off or temporarily unavailable. On many equipped Subaru models, you can restore it by selecting Reverse and pressing and holding the on-screen RAB OFF button until it changes to RAB ON.

The exact menu and button location vary by model year, trim, market, and infotainment system. If the control is gray, RAB will not re-enable, or a separate RAB, EyeSight, ABS, brake, or check-engine warning remains illuminated, clean the rear bumper sensor area and arrange a vehicle-specific inspection if the problem persists.

What does RAB stand for?

RAB stands for Reverse Automatic Braking. “Rear Automatic Braking” is a common third-party expansion, but it is not Subaru’s official terminology. The word reverse is important: RAB is designed to assist while the vehicle is backing up, not as a general-purpose rear collision-avoidance or autonomous-parking system.

On equipped Subaru vehicles, the system uses four sonar sensors mounted in the rear bumper to detect objects behind the vehicle. Subaru describes RAB operation at approximately 1–9 mph in Reverse, although exact operating limits and behavior can vary by model and model year. The system can show proximity information on the rear-camera display, sound warnings that become more urgent as an object gets closer, and apply the brakes when it determines that a collision may be imminent. See Subaru’s RAB explanation and the relevant owner’s manual for the specific vehicle.

RAB is a driver-assistance feature, not a substitute for looking behind the vehicle. Continue checking the area directly, using the mirrors, and watching the rear camera whenever reversing. It may not detect every object or operating condition.

What “RAB OFF” actually means

The RAB OFF message alone does not prove that the system has failed. Subaru manuals use the indicator for more than one situation:

  1. RAB was manually switched off. The driver or a previous driver may have disabled it from the reverse-camera screen or vehicle settings.
  2. RAB is temporarily suspended. The system may make itself unavailable when its sonar sensors are obstructed, conditions are outside its operating requirements, or detection is unreliable.
  3. A malfunction or related-system fault is present. A persistent RAB warning indicator, EyeSight warning, brake or ABS warning, or another fault message requires more attention than the OFF label by itself.

In other words, “RAB OFF” is not the same as a dedicated RAB malfunction warning light. The display, accompanying warning lights, and what happened immediately beforehand help distinguish a setting from a temporary suspension or fault. Subaru’s manuals describe this distinction for different model years, including the 2023-era guide and the corresponding model-specific documentation.

How to turn RAB back on

Method 1: Use the reverse-camera screen

This is the fastest method on many North American Subaru systems:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start the vehicle.
  2. Keep your foot on the brake and shift into Reverse.
  3. Wait for the reverse-camera view and its controls to appear.
  4. Find the control labeled RAB OFF. It may be a soft key near the bottom of the display, and its color and position vary.
  5. Press and hold the button for more than two seconds. A brief tap may not change the setting.
  6. Release it when the label changes to RAB ON, or when the RAB OFF indicator disappears.
  7. For a quick check, shift out of Reverse and select Reverse again. Confirm that the system remains available.

Subaru’s Legacy and Outback technical guidance specifically calls for holding the reverse-camera RAB switch for more than two seconds on applicable systems. Newer guides also show RAB controls when the selector is in Reverse, but the screen design is not universal. See the Subaru TechTIPS bulletin and Subaru’s getting-started guidance.

Method 2: Use vehicle settings or the instrument display

Some Subaru configurations let you change RAB without using the reverse-camera soft key. A representative settings path is:

Ignition ON → steering-wheel controls → Settings → RAB → Automatic Braking → Enable

Another configuration uses a path similar to Settings → Vehicle → Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB). These are examples, not a universal Subaru menu path. Subaru’s model-specific support instructions explicitly note that equipment and procedures differ by vehicle, year, grade, and option. Check the correct manual through Subaru’s RAB support page or the official owner-information portal.

Method 3: Older audio or navigation systems

On some older Outback and related systems, the RAB control appears on the audio or navigation display after the selector is placed in Reverse:

  • If the screen shows ON, RAB is enabled. Pressing and holding the key changes it to OFF.
  • If the screen shows OFF, RAB is disabled. Pressing and holding the key changes it to ON.
  • When automatic braking is enabled, the RAB OFF indicator should go out.

Some older systems prevent the setting from being changed for approximately 14 seconds after the ignition is switched on. If the control is initially gray, wait for the startup period to finish before assuming there is a fault. This delay is model-specific, not a universal Subaru rule. See the 2019 Outback manual material and the 2017 Outback manual page.

Why is the RAB button missing or grayed out?

A disabled control usually means the vehicle will not accept a setting change at that moment. The likely explanations are:

  • The vehicle is still within its startup lockout period.
  • RAB has detected a temporary operating problem.
  • Ice, snow, mud, road salt, or water is covering one or more rear sonar sensors.
  • A trailer hitch, bike rack, bumper guard, or other rear accessory is interfering with the sensors.
  • An object is extremely close to the bumper when Reverse is selected.
  • Vehicle Dynamics Control, or VDC, is switched off on a model that links RAB availability to VDC.
  • A related driver-assistance system is unavailable.
  • The vehicle does not have RAB, or its particular trim uses a different control.
  • A sensor was moved or damaged by a collision, bumper repair, repainting, or incorrect bumper installation.

If the control remains gray after the startup period and an ignition cycle, Subaru manuals direct the owner to seek inspection rather than repeatedly trying the switch.

What can temporarily disable RAB?

RAB relies on sonar detection, so conditions that block, distort, or confuse the sonar can cause the system to suspend itself or provide degraded detection. The exact list differs between manuals, but Subaru documentation identifies or discusses conditions including:

Sensor contamination or obstruction

  • Ice, snow, mud, dirt, road salt, or other deposits on the four rear bumper sensor areas.
  • Heavy rain or substantial water around the sensors.
  • A trailer hitch, bicycle carrier, bumper guard, or other accessory near the sensor field.
  • A sensor knocked out of alignment during an impact or bumper repair.

Surrounding conditions

  • An object positioned extremely close to the rear bumper.
  • Steep inclines, uneven ground, curbs, drainage grates, gravel, grass, or narrow surroundings.
  • Fog, snow, sandstorms, strong wind, or extreme temperatures around the sensors.
  • Sounds with a frequency similar to the RAB sonar.
  • VDC being switched off, where that model’s manual lists VDC as a requirement.

Some of these are documented causes of temporary suspension; others are conditions in which Subaru warns that detection may be degraded. They should not be treated as a single universal list for every Outback, Legacy, Forester, Crosstrek, Impreza, Ascent, WRX, or related model. Examples of the model-specific cautions appear in the 2019 Outback material, the 2023 Impreza manual, and the 2023 Outback manual.

What to check before calling for service

Use this order when RAB will not turn on:

  1. Confirm that it was not manually disabled. Select Reverse and hold the RAB OFF control until it changes to RAB ON.
  2. Clean the sensor areas. With the vehicle safely parked and switched off, use a soft cloth to remove mud, snow, ice, salt, and heavy deposits from the rear bumper around the four sonar sensors. Do not scrape, press hard on, repaint, cover, or disassemble the sensors.
  3. Check for rear-mounted equipment. Remove a bike rack or other accessory if practical. If you are towing, follow Subaru’s instructions for temporarily switching RAB off; the system may interpret the trailer or hitch equipment as an obstacle.
  4. Look at the surroundings. Move away from an object that is extremely close to the bumper and select Reverse again. If the behavior happens only at a curb, steep driveway, drainage grate, slope, or uneven surface, the geometry may be affecting sonar detection.
  5. Check VDC. Make sure Vehicle Dynamics Control has not been turned off if your owner’s manual lists VDC OFF as a condition that suspends RAB.
  6. Cycle the ignition. After moving the vehicle to a safe location, switch it off, wait briefly, restart it, and try the appropriate RAB procedure again.
  7. Check the entire instrument cluster. Note any RAB warning, EyeSight, ABS, brake, check-engine, or other driver-assistance message.

Do not treat a battery event, jump-start, software update, tire mismatch, or camera-calibration issue as a confirmed cause without vehicle-specific diagnostic evidence. Such explanations may be suggested elsewhere, but Subaru’s documented first checks focus on the control state, sensor conditions, related warnings, and bumper or sensor damage.

RAB braking and the beeping alarm are separate settings

The reverse-camera display commonly includes two different controls:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Control What it affects
RAB ON/OFF The automatic reverse-braking function.
P))) ON/OFF, Sonar ON/OFF, or a similar control The audible sonar proximity warning.

Turning off the beeps does not necessarily turn off automatic braking. Likewise, turning RAB back on does not necessarily restore a separately selected audible-alarm setting. If you want both functions available, check both controls on your vehicle’s screen or in its settings. Subaru documents them as separate functions in its RAB support information and relevant owner manuals.

When temporarily turning RAB off makes sense

Subaru identifies towing and carrying bicycles on a rear-mounted rack as situations in which temporarily disabling RAB may be appropriate. A trailer, hitch, rack, or other equipment can obstruct or reflect the sonar signals and produce unnecessary warnings or unexpected braking. The same consideration can apply to a bumper guard or another accessory near the sensor area.

Once the trailer, rack, or other obstruction is removed, turn RAB back on if the system is operating normally. Leaving it off removes one layer of rear-obstacle assistance, so continue to use direct observation, mirrors, and the rear camera. See Subaru’s current getting-started guide and its towing-related guidance.

What if RAB stopped the car and then showed OFF?

After RAB automatically brakes the vehicle, some Subaru manuals instruct the driver to press the brake pedal immediately. On applicable systems, RAB may then be temporarily unavailable and the RAB OFF indicator may illuminate. The system can become available again after shifting out of Reverse and selecting Reverse once more.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Model-specific manuals also describe additional behavior after an automatic stop, such as a limited period of brake holding or the electronic parking brake engaging after a door is opened or the vehicle remains stopped for an extended period. Those details should not be generalized to every Subaru. If the car has just braked itself, secure the vehicle, check the area behind it, press the brake pedal, and follow the instructions in the specific owner’s manual. The 2023 Impreza documentation gives one example of this behavior.

Does RAB turn back on automatically after a restart?

Not always. Subaru has used different settings behavior across model years and systems:

  • A 2017 Outback manual says the RAB setting is restored to its default ON state the next time Reverse is selected.
  • A Subaru technical bulletin says Legacy and Outback models before the all-new 2020 model year defaulted to ON after the ignition was switched off.
  • The same bulletin says the 2020 Legacy and Outback retain the ON or OFF state selected by the driver before the ignition was switched off.
  • Other Subaru models and model years may follow different rules.

Do not assume that restarting the vehicle will always re-enable RAB, and do not assume that it will remain off permanently. Verify the setting in Reverse and use the correct manual for your vehicle. The model-year distinction is described in Subaru’s Legacy/Outback technical bulletin.

Is RAB the same as Rear Cross-Traffic Alert?

No. The systems address different risks:

  • RAB monitors obstacles behind the vehicle while reversing and may apply the brakes if it predicts a collision.
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert monitors for approaching traffic from the sides, such as a vehicle moving through a parking-lot lane, and generally provides visual and audible warnings.

They may use different sensors and separate controls. RAB should not be described as a radar-based version of Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and it should not automatically be treated as part of the forward-facing EyeSight camera system. Equipment and system relationships vary by model and market. Subaru discusses the distinction in its RAB support information and owner information for related driver-assistance features.

Can you drive with RAB OFF?

If the only message is RAB OFF and no critical warning is present, the vehicle is generally still drivable; however, the Reverse Automatic Braking assistance is not available. You must compensate by reversing more slowly and carefully while checking the camera, mirrors, and surroundings directly.

Do not simply ignore the message if:

  • The dedicated RAB warning indicator stays illuminated.
  • The RAB button is permanently grayed out.
  • RAB will not re-enable after cleaning, removing obstructions, and cycling the ignition.
  • The message appears with an EyeSight, ABS, brake, check-engine, or other system warning.
  • The vehicle recently had a rear-end impact, bumper replacement, repainting, wiring work, or sensor repair.
  • RAB repeatedly disables itself in clean, dry, unobstructed conditions.

In those cases, schedule diagnosis with a Subaru dealer or a qualified repair facility that can properly inspect Subaru’s driver-assistance and sonar systems. Do not reposition or disassemble the sensors yourself.

Quick fix

Put the Subaru in Reverse, locate the reverse-camera-screen RAB OFF control, and press and hold it for more than two seconds until it changes to RAB ON. If the button is gray or the message immediately returns, wait through the startup period, clean the four rear bumper sensor areas, remove any hitch or rack obstruction, confirm VDC is on where applicable, and restart the vehicle. If the problem remains or another warning light is present, use the vehicle-specific manual and arrange an inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does RAB OFF mean the Subaru’s brakes are broken?

Not by itself. RAB OFF can mean that Reverse Automatic Braking was manually disabled or temporarily suspended. A separate RAB warning light, brake warning, ABS warning, EyeSight message, or persistent inability to change the setting should be treated as a possible fault and inspected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does RAB turn off when I use a bike rack or trailer?

Rear-mounted equipment can obstruct or reflect the sonar signals. Subaru specifically identifies trailers and bike racks as situations in which temporarily disabling RAB may prevent unnecessary warnings or unexpected braking. Turn it back on after the obstruction is removed, if the system is otherwise normal.

Will RAB automatically turn back on after I restart the car?

It depends on the model and year. Some older Legacy and Outback systems defaulted back to ON, while 2020 Legacy and Outback systems retained the driver-selected ON/OFF state. Check the RAB status in Reverse rather than relying on a restart.

Does turning off the RAB beeping also turn off automatic braking?

Not necessarily. Subaru treats the RAB automatic-braking control and the audible sonar-warning control as separate settings. Check both controls if you need both automatic braking and audible proximity warnings enabled.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: RAB means Reverse Automatic Braking. “RAB OFF” may be a selected setting or a temporary suspension, not necessarily a failure. On many Subarus, select Reverse and hold the on-screen RAB OFF button until it reads RAB ON. If it is unavailable after cleaning the bumper sensors, removing rear accessories, checking VDC, and restarting—or if other warning lights are on—have the vehicle inspected.
