A realistic ownership budget must also account for depreciation, financing, electricity, charging equipment, insurance, maintenance, repairs, tires, taxes, registration and fees. Depending on the model, purchase terms, mileage, electricity prices, charging access, insurance profile and location, those costs can either narrow or outweigh the savings from using electricity instead of gasoline.
There is no universal annual price for owning a “luxury EV.” A high-priced model can lose more dollars to depreciation than a less expensive car, while a driver who charges mostly at home may spend far less on energy than one who relies on public fast chargers. The method below shows how to build a defensible estimate for a particular vehicle and household.

What costs belong in a luxury-EV budget?
Use the same ownership period and mileage for every vehicle you compare. A five-year, 75,000-mile estimate is a common benchmark, but your actual holding period and driving pattern should replace it. Include both cash expenses and the value lost as the vehicle ages.
| Cost category | What to estimate | Why it can be significant for a luxury EV |
|---|---|---|
| Depreciation and resale | Purchase price minus expected value when you sell or trade | A higher starting price creates more dollars at risk, and resale values vary by model, battery condition, incentives and market demand. |
| Financing or lease | Interest, loan fees, down payment, lease payments, due-at-signing amount, mileage limits and end-of-term charges | Finance costs can offset energy savings. Lease and loan calculations are not interchangeable. |
| Electricity and charging | Home electricity, public charging, charging losses, equipment and installation | Rates, vehicle efficiency and the home/public charging mix differ widely. |
| Insurance | Quote for the exact trim, driver, address, coverage and deductible | Repair costs, replacement parts and vehicle value can affect premiums, but no generic luxury-EV rate is reliable. |
| Maintenance, repairs and tires | Scheduled service, tires, wear items, repairs and out-of-warranty exposure | EVs avoid oil changes but still need tires, suspension work, inspections and repairs. |
| Taxes, registration and fees | Purchase taxes, annual registration, local surcharges and other government fees | Rules can depend on vehicle price, weight or powertrain and change by jurisdiction. |
| Battery condition and warranty | Remaining time, mileage, capacity threshold, exclusions and inspection results | Coverage is model-, market- and manufacturer-specific; an older used EV may have less protection. |
AAA director of automotive engineering Greg Brannon summarized the reason to use this broader view: “Looking at the full ownership picture—including depreciation and other expenses—can help consumers better understand the total cost of each option.”

Depreciation is often the largest hidden cost
Depreciation is the difference between what you pay and what the car is worth when you sell it. It is not a monthly bill, but it is a real ownership cost: a vehicle that falls from $100,000 to $55,000 over five years has consumed $45,000 of value before financing, energy or insurance are counted.
Luxury EV depreciation is especially difficult to predict because transaction prices can move when manufacturers change list prices, introduce longer-range models or offer incentives on new inventory. Battery age, remaining warranty, software support, accident history, mileage and condition also influence a used buyer’s offer. Treat online resale estimates as assumptions to test, not guarantees.
AAA’s 2026 Your Driving Costs analysis identifies depreciation as its largest ownership-cost category. In its selected comparison, EV medium sedans had a 29.1% higher annual ownership cost than comparable gasoline medium sedans; AAA attributed part of the difference to higher depreciation, fees and finance costs. That percentage applies to the study’s selected categories and assumptions, not to every luxury EV.
To model your car, obtain a realistic future-value range and calculate three cases: optimistic, midpoint and pessimistic. Then divide the purchase-price loss by the number of years you expect to keep the vehicle. If you lease, depreciation is embedded in the payment calculation rather than shown as a resale value you receive.
Financing and leasing can outweigh energy savings
For a purchase, calculate the amount financed after the down payment and incentives, then include the actual annual percentage rate, term and lender fees. A lower monthly payment caused by a longer term can increase total interest and leave you owing more than the vehicle is worth for longer. Include any required finance products or end-of-loan charges in the contract rather than assuming the advertised payment is the full cost.
For a lease, total the scheduled payments, due-at-signing amount, acquisition and disposition charges, taxes, mileage allowance and excess-mileage or wear charges. A lease estimate should also identify what happens at lease end; do not substitute a loan’s depreciation calculation for a lease’s contractual residual value.
AAA’s methodology includes finance charges, but it does not provide a universal luxury-EV loan or lease rate. Use a lender or leasing company’s written offer for your vehicle and credit profile.

Electricity and charging: lower energy cost, variable real-world bill
Calculate home charging from your vehicle and tariff
Start with the vehicle’s consumption in kilowatt-hours per mile (or per 100 miles), multiply by your expected annual mileage, and apply your electricity rate. Add a margin for charging losses if the consumption figure is measured at the vehicle rather than at the wall. Repeat the calculation for seasonal driving if extreme temperatures or climate control materially change efficiency.
AAA used an average home-charging electricity price of 18.0 U.S. cents per kilowatt-hour in its 2026 study. That is a dated study assumption, not a current tariff for every utility customer. Your bill may include time-of-use rates, demand charges, taxes or a different residential price.
Include the charging setup when it is part of the decision
A home Level 2 charger may require the unit, wiring, a circuit upgrade, permits and electrician labor. Some homes already have suitable capacity; others need significant electrical work. Include the capital cost only when it is relevant to your home, and separate one-time installation from recurring electricity.
Public charging can have per-kilowatt-hour, per-minute, session or membership fees. Estimate the share of miles charged publicly, the stations’ prices and any idle fees. A driver without reliable home access may pay substantially more than a driver who charges overnight at home, even in the same vehicle.

The UK Department for Transport reported a January 2024 example of about 8 pence per mile to charge a medium-sized electric car at home, compared with 13–17 pence per mile to fuel an equivalent petrol or diesel car. Those are UK figures from that date and vehicle class, not a current U.S. estimate. The department also states, with attribution to Citizens Advice, that “The majority of EV (electric vehicle) charging is done on low power chargepoints at or near home overnight.”
What the broad comparison shows
Across the categories it studied, AAA found EV charging costs about 66%–70% lower than gasoline costs. That saving is meaningful, but it is only one line in the budget. The same AAA analysis found the selected EV medium-sedan comparison cost 29.1% more per year overall because depreciation, fees and finance costs could exceed the energy advantage.
Insurance requires an exact quote
Request quotes for the exact make, model, trim and annual mileage at your address. Provide the intended drivers, liability limits, comprehensive and collision deductibles, storage location and any safety or driver-assistance equipment. Compare identical coverage between vehicles; a lower premium with lower limits is not a lower ownership cost on an equivalent basis.

Insurance is included among the total-cost factors in a New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection summary of a California Air Resources Board analysis, but that source does not establish an individual luxury-EV premium. Repair complexity, parts availability, replacement value, claims history and local theft rates can all affect the quote.

Maintenance, repairs and tires do not disappear
Electric drivetrains generally eliminate routine engine-oil and exhaust-system service, but they still require inspections and wear-item replacement. Budget for tires, wheel alignment, brake-system service, cabin filters, wiper equipment, cooling-system service where specified, software or diagnostic work, and repairs after the warranty expires.
Luxury EVs can use large, high-performance wheels and specialized tires. A heavier vehicle and strong acceleration can increase tread wear, while pothole damage can affect expensive wheels and suspension components. Ask the service department for the scheduled-maintenance list and tire specifications for the exact trim, then obtain local replacement prices rather than using a generic compact-car allowance.
AAA’s ownership methodology includes maintenance, repair and tire costs. Its inclusion is a reminder that “fewer moving parts” does not mean zero service spending.
Taxes, registration and fees vary by jurisdiction
Build a location-specific list of purchase or lease taxes, title and registration charges, annual EV or road-use fees, inspection fees, luxury or weight-based surcharges and local assessments. Some jurisdictions calculate fees from vehicle value; others use weight, powertrain or a flat schedule. Confirm the current rules with the relevant government agency because rates and incentives can change.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s summary of a CARB analysis includes purchase taxes and registration fees, as well as insurance and home-charger investment. It models a battery EV purchased in 2026 against an internal-combustion vehicle and reports $1,732 in modeled 10-year savings. That is a state analysis with stated assumptions, not a promise for an individual luxury car or another location.
Tax credits and rebates may exist, but eligibility can depend on income, vehicle price, assembly location, battery sourcing, lease structure and purchase date. Treat any incentive as conditional until you verify the current program and your eligibility.

Battery warranty and condition: read the actual terms
New vehicles
Read the model-year warranty booklet before purchase. Record the coverage period, mileage limit, minimum battery-capacity threshold, transferability, diagnostic process and exclusions. A capacity guarantee is different from a promise that the battery will deliver its original driving range in every temperature or driving condition.
UK rules illustrate the importance of geography: the UK government describes mandated protection for cars lasting eight years or 100,000 miles with a 70% battery-capacity threshold, and 65% for vans. Those requirements are scoped to the UK and should not be generalized to another country.
Recommended Free Tools
A manufacturer example also shows why the vehicle’s precise terms matter. Mopar states an eight-year/100,000-mile high-voltage battery warranty, or 10 years/150,000 miles in states using California emissions rules, for covered Stellantis vehicles. Check the specific vehicle’s exclusions, eligibility and in-service date rather than assuming every model receives the longest term.
Used vehicles
Ask for a battery-health report or an independent diagnostic assessment, and compare the measured usable capacity with the original specification. Check real-world range on a route you understand, battery age, remaining warranty, accident or flood history, charging behavior and service records. A vehicle with a healthy battery but little warranty remaining deserves a different risk allowance from one with documented coverage.
Do not put an unverified battery-replacement price into your budget as though it were an expected bill. Replacement costs depend on the vehicle, pack design, parts availability, labor and whether a repair or module-level service is possible. Use the inspection and warranty evidence to set a contingency reserve instead.
A step-by-step way to calculate your total cost
- Define the use case. Choose the vehicle, trim, country and jurisdiction, annual mileage, ownership period and whether you will buy or lease.
- Gather transaction terms. Record the negotiated price, taxes, fees, down payment, incentives, APR and loan term, or every lease payment and due-at-signing charge.
- Estimate depreciation. Use a range of future resale or trade-in values and subtract it from the purchase price. For a lease, use the contract’s residual and payment structure.
- Model charging. Divide expected miles among home, workplace and public charging; apply each rate to the vehicle’s energy consumption; then add charging losses, memberships and any one-time home installation.
- Obtain insurance quotes. Keep coverage limits and deductibles identical across vehicles.
- Price service and tires. Use the manufacturer schedule, local labor rates and the exact tire size. Add a separate repair reserve for the post-warranty years.
- Verify taxes and registration. Use current local schedules for the purchase and every renewal year, including any EV-specific fee.
- Check battery protection. For a new car, save the warranty booklet and in-service date. For a used car, pay for documented health and condition checks before committing.
- Compare totals and sensitivity. Run low-, middle- and high-cost cases for resale value, public charging share, electricity rates, insurance and repairs. The option that wins only under one optimistic assumption is not a robust bargain.

How to decide whether the premium is worthwhile
- Home charging available: You can usually model energy with greater certainty and may capture the largest charging-cost advantage.
- Mostly public charging: Use actual station prices and likely charging sessions; the energy advantage may be smaller.
- Short ownership period: Depreciation, transaction fees and finance charges deserve extra weight because you have fewer years to spread them.
- Long ownership period: Remaining battery warranty, tire wear and post-warranty repair exposure become more important.
- High annual mileage: Energy and tire costs matter more, but so do mileage-related resale effects and lease limits.
- Used luxury EV: A lower purchase price can reduce depreciation dollars, but battery health, warranty remaining and service history must be verified.
The practical answer to “What are the hidden costs of owning an electric car?” is therefore vehicle- and household-specific. Charging and routine-maintenance savings are real in many comparisons, yet they do not establish that a luxury EV is cheaper overall. Make the decision from a complete, location-specific total-cost worksheet rather than the sticker price or a fuel-saving headline.
