BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke, which the company translates as “Bavarian Motor Works.” The name reflects the firm’s Bavarian roots and its early business making engines for different applications. The BMW name dates to 1917, while BMW’s official founding date is 7 March 1916—a distinction rooted in the company’s predecessor businesses.
What does BMW stand for?
BMW is the abbreviation for Bayerische Motoren Werke. BMW Group Classic translates the German company name as “Bavarian Motor Works.” “Bayerische” means Bavarian, while “Motoren Werke” refers to motor works. The name thus points to both the company’s home region and its original engine-making work.

Why is BMW’s founding date 1916 if the name came later?
The dates refer to different events in a chain of predecessor companies, rather than to a single moment when the modern company appeared fully formed. BMW’s official history traces its origins to aircraft manufacturer Flugmaschinenfabrik Gustav Otto and aero-engine producer Rapp Motorenwerke. In 1916, Gustav Otto’s factory was reorganized as Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW). A year later, Rapp Motorenwerke took the name Bayerische Motorenwerke GmbH.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 7 March 1916 | BFW was founded. BMW identifies this as its official founding date, based on the predecessor-company lineage. |
| 21 July 1917 | Rapp Motorenwerke registered the name Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH; this is when the BMW name came into use. |
| 1918 | The company became a public limited company, BMW AG. |
| 6 July 1922 | BMW AG transferred its name, logo and engine-construction operations to BFW. |
The 1916 date is therefore not the date the letters “BMW” first appeared as the company name. BMW’s account treats the founding of BFW as the start of the corporate lineage; the BMW name itself arrived with the 1917 renaming of Rapp Motorenwerke. The 1922 transfer joined the name and engine business to BFW, which carried the company forward.

How did BMW move from engines to motorcycles?
The name’s emphasis on motor works makes sense in light of the company’s early engine business, which preceded its identity as a motorcycle maker. BMW presented the R 32 at the German Motor Show in Berlin on 28 September 1923. The company identifies it as the first motorcycle produced under the BMW brand.

When was the BMW logo created, and is it a propeller?
BMW’s round logo was entered in the trademark registry on 10 December 1917. The propeller interpretation appeared in BMW advertising in the late 1920s, after the logo’s registration. Those dates distinguish the emblem’s documented registration from its later public association with a propeller; the timeline does not establish that a propeller was the original design concept.
