The MH-60 Seahawk is a maritime member of the H-60 helicopter family, but it is not simply an Army Black Hawk painted for the Navy. The Navy adapted the family for ship-based aviation and maritime missions, then developed two current variants with different priorities: the MH-60R “Romeo” specializes in anti-submarine and surface warfare, while the MH-60S “Sierra” handles a wider mix of combat support, rescue, logistics, humanitarian work and airborne mine countermeasures.
Why is the Seahawk called a Black Hawk cousin?
The Seahawk’s family connection begins with the Army UH-60 Black Hawk. The Naval History and Heritage Command says the Navy based its maritime helicopter requirements on the UH-60 to pursue commonality and lower cost. That shared lineage is real, but “cousin” is more accurate than treating today’s Navy aircraft as an identical Black Hawk with a different job.

The Navy received the SH-60B in 1983 and the SH-60F in 1988, according to its MH-60 Seahawk fact file. The later R and S models followed distinct paths. The MH-60R succeeded the SH-60B/F line and their mission systems; the MH-60S is based on the UH-60L airframe, modified for the maritime environment. They share cockpit commonality, but not an identical configuration or mission.
The two variants also have different operational milestones depending on the source’s wording. The Navy’s general fact file says the S entered service in 2002 and gives the R’s initial operational capability (IOC) as 2006. Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) lists the S’s IOC as August 2002 and full operational capability in 2016; for the R, it lists IOC in December 2005 and full operational capability in 2010. These source-specific dates should not be collapsed into a single timeline.

What makes a Seahawk a maritime helicopter?
A Seahawk operates as part of a ship-and-aircraft team: it can fly from ships and perform missions centered on the maritime environment. The Navy lists cruisers, destroyers, littoral combat ships and nuclear-powered aircraft carriers among the vessels that operate the R and S. NAVAIR describes the R as designed for land or maritime operations from aviation ships and other air-capable vessels.
That context distinguishes the Seahawk from the land-focused role associated with the Black Hawk. Its naval identity is about where it operates and what missions and equipment it brings to a ship’s aviation capability—not merely its paint scheme. The cited Navy material establishes that operating context, but does not detail every airframe adaptation or shipboard procedure.

How do the MH-60R and MH-60S differ?
Both are Navy Seahawks, but their main task sets are different. The R is the Navy’s primary anti-submarine and surface-warfare helicopter. The S is oriented toward a broader range of combat-support and utility missions, including rescue, logistics, humanitarian assistance and airborne mine countermeasures.
| Comparison | MH-60R “Romeo” | MH-60S “Sierra” |
|---|---|---|
| Lineage and role | Succeeded the SH-60B/F line and its mission systems; the Navy’s primary anti-submarine and surface-warfare helicopter. | Based on the UH-60L airframe with maritime modifications; replaced the legacy CH-46D Sea Knight and HH-60H Seahawk. |
| Missions listed by NAVAIR | Primary: anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, electromagnetic warfare, command and control, and non-combat operations. Secondary: naval surface fire support, medical evacuation, search and rescue, logistics, special warfare, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. | Anti-surface warfare, combat support, humanitarian disaster relief, combat search and rescue, aeromedical evacuation, special warfare, and organic airborne mine countermeasures. |
| Additional missions noted by the Navy | — | Maritime interdiction, personnel recovery, vertical replenishment, logistics, non-combat evacuation, and humanitarian assistance/disaster relief. |
| Cockpit | Shares a common cockpit with the S. | Glass cockpit with active-matrix liquid-crystal displays; shares a common cockpit with the R, which NAVAIR says lets pilots move between aircraft with minimal retraining. |
| Empty weight and maximum gross weight | 15,170 pounds empty; 23,500 pounds maximum gross (NAVAIR page, undated snapshot accessed 2026). | 14,430 pounds empty; 23,500 pounds maximum gross (NAVAIR page, undated snapshot accessed 2026). |
| Range listed by NAVAIR | Not stated on the NAVAIR R page. | 245 nautical miles (NAVAIR page, undated snapshot accessed 2026). |
“Not stated” here means the cited NAVAIR variant page does not give that figure; it does not mean the aircraft has no range. Separately, the Navy’s 2020 family-level fact file gives the Seahawk a general range of about 380 nautical miles. That is not a precise variant-specific mission radius and should not be substituted for the S’s NAVAIR figure.

What do the published size and speed figures mean?
The Navy’s 2020 fact file gives family-level figures of 64 feet 10 inches in length, a 53-foot-8-inch rotor diameter and a maximum airspeed of 180 knots. These are broad Seahawk-family specifications, not a complete comparison of the current variants. NAVAIR also lists 180 knots as the S’s maximum airspeed.
For a variant-specific weight comparison, NAVAIR’s undated pages accessed in 2026 list both the R and S at a maximum gross weight of 23,500 pounds, with the empty weights shown in the table. Weight and range figures do not by themselves describe mission performance: the equipment carried and task being flown matter, and the cited pages do not establish a common set of operating conditions for comparing the aircraft.

Can a Seahawk operate from a ship?
Yes. The Navy lists the MH-60R and MH-60S as operating from cruisers, destroyers, littoral combat ships and nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. NAVAIR says the R is designed for operations from an aviation ship or another air-capable vessel. The broader Seahawk family has also served from other air-capable ship types, including frigates, fast combat support ships and amphibious assault ships, according to the Naval History and Heritage Command.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which Seahawk is used for which job?
- Choose the MH-60R when the priority is maritime warfare. Its primary emphasis is finding and engaging submarine and surface threats, with additional warfare, command-and-control and support missions.
- Choose the MH-60S when the task calls for broader shipboard support. Its listed roles range from rescue and personnel recovery to logistics, humanitarian relief and organic airborne mine countermeasures.
- Do not rank one as universally better. Their value depends on the mission; a common cockpit helps pilots transition, but does not erase the variants’ different lineages and task sets.
What is established—and what is not?
The public Navy and NAVAIR material cited here establishes the variants’ broad roles, some basic specifications and their shipboard context. It does not establish classified capabilities, detailed sensor performance, current deployment schedules or the exact configuration of aircraft assigned to a particular squadron. Inventory numbers are omitted because the NAVAIR pages’ counts are undated snapshots and cannot be presented as a current, consistently dated total.
