The exact badge, equipment and output depend on the model year and market.
In practical terms, an M Performance electric BMW combines an electric powertrain with M-specific chassis technology and aerodynamic features. To understand what you are buying, separate four easily confused labels: M Sport, M Performance, BMW M and M Performance Parts.

What “M Performance” means on an electric BMW
BMW uses M Performance as a model designation for cars positioned between an ordinary BMW and a full BMW M model. It signals that the vehicle was developed with a stronger emphasis on acceleration, handling and visual intent than a standard version of the same model.

That distinction matters because an M Performance car is a complete vehicle variant. It has its own powertrain and equipment specification rather than simply receiving a collection of cosmetic options. BMW’s electric i4 information, for example, separates the i4 eDrive40 with M Sport specification from the i4 M50 performance model.

BMW describes M Performance models as combining powerful drive systems with M-specific chassis technology and aerodynamic body features. The precise hardware varies by vehicle, production year and country, so the badge should be treated as a starting point for checking the individual specification rather than as a guarantee that every M Performance model has identical equipment.
What the badge does not mean
- It does not mean the car is only wearing an M Sport styling package.
- It does not automatically mean the car is a full BMW M model.
- It does not establish one universal horsepower, range or equipment list across all countries and model years.
- It does not refer to an accessory fitted after purchase; BMW’s M Performance Parts are a separate category.
How M Performance differs from M Sport and BMW M

The simplest test is to ask whether the label describes the identity of the vehicle, a package fitted to that vehicle, a future or current BMW M product, or an accessory. Those are four different things.
What changes on an electric M Performance model?
Electric drive hardware
BMW’s launch-era i4 M50 was described as an electric all-wheel-drive M Performance model. That means the performance version was defined by more than exterior trim: its electric drive system and associated control strategy were part of the model’s identity.
Electric cars deliver their response differently from combustion cars, but the M Performance objective is familiar: make the car react more immediately and feel more controlled when the driver is accelerating, cornering or changing direction. The exact motor count, software calibration and thermal specification must be confirmed for the particular vehicle being considered.
M-specific chassis technology
BMW associates M Performance models with M-specific chassis technology. In an electric car, that can affect how the suspension, steering, stability systems and drive-control software work together. It is not accurate to assume that every car with an M Sport exterior has the same chassis development as an M Performance variant.

Equipment can change with production updates and regional configurations. A used-car buyer should therefore read the original specification sheet or vehicle identification record instead of relying only on the badge or photographs.
Aerodynamic design
M Performance models also receive M-specific aerodynamic body features. These features may change airflow management and give the car a more purposeful appearance. They should not be confused with individually purchased M Performance Parts, which are optional accessories that may be available for a compatible car.
Driving modes and software
Electric BMWs can alter power delivery and vehicle responses through selectable drive modes. BMW’s US-market 2026 i4 M60 update, for example, quotes a higher output in My Modes Sport than at startup. That illustrates why a single headline power figure may not describe every operating condition.
Do not assume that the most aggressive mode is the normal or continuously available output. Check how BMW defines the figure, which mode produces it and whether the number is a peak, temporary or market-specific rating.
BMW electric M Performance names by year and market
The model name is not frozen globally. BMW’s original i4 launch materials identified the performance variant as the i4 M50. BMW’s US-market 2026 update identifies the range-topping i4 as the i4 M60. Those names should not be merged into one timeless specification.

The 510-hp and 593-hp figures are not global or timeless specifications. They belong to BMW of North America’s US-market 2026 update, and the range numbers are preliminary estimates. A different country, wheel configuration or model year can produce a different result.
Why wheel size matters to an electric M Performance car
BMW’s own 2026 US figures show a 46-mile difference between the preliminary 19-inch and 20-inch range estimates for the i4 M60: 278 miles versus 232 miles. The comparison is useful because it shows how configuration can affect an electric car’s official range even when the model badge remains the same.
When comparing two listings, record the wheel diameter alongside the model year and drivetrain. Do not quote the higher estimate as though it applies to every wheel option, and do not assume that a used car with larger wheels has the same certified range as the version shown in a brochure.
Is an electric BMW M Performance car a full M car?
No. M Performance and BMW M are related parts of BMW’s performance hierarchy, but they are not interchangeable labels. The i4 M50 and the later US-market i4 M60 are M Performance examples, not the announced next generation of fully electric BMW M cars.
BMW announced in January 2026 that a separate fully electric BMW M generation is planned to open a new chapter in 2027. The announcement describes a four-electric-motor architecture with individual-wheel drive. That is a future BMW M program, not a description of the current i4 M60.

BMW M GmbH Managing Director Franciscus van Meel described the future system this way: “The new model generation is like an orchestra – but rather multiple conductors, it is synchronised by precise technology.” He also stated that “At BMW M, high performance has never been just about engine output – it’s about driving dynamics, precision, emotion and technology as well.” Both comments concern the announced future electric BMW M generation, not the existing M Performance badge.
Until those future models reach production, the sensible distinction is straightforward: an M Performance electric BMW is a performance-focused variant available within a model range, while a BMW M electric car belongs to the separate high-performance M vehicle line.

- Read the complete model name. Confirm whether the listing says M50, M60 or another designation, rather than relying on an isolated M badge.
- Attach the model year and market. The same i4 family can carry different performance names and specifications in different periods or countries.
- Separate M Sport from M Performance. Check whether M Sport is listed as a package on a regular model or whether the vehicle itself is an M Performance variant.
- Verify drivetrain details. Confirm the drive configuration and the equipment included on that exact vehicle; launch-era i4 M50 material identifies electric all-wheel drive, but equipment is not universal across every version.
- Check the official power definition. Note whether output is quoted at startup, in a particular My Mode or under another stated condition.
- Record the wheel size. Official range can differ substantially between wheel options, as BMW’s 2026 US i4 M60 estimates demonstrate.
- Inspect the build specification. Use the vehicle’s original build sheet or an authorized BMW source to confirm chassis, aerodynamic and software equipment.
- Treat accessories separately. If M Performance Parts are fitted, verify their part numbers and compatibility with the precise i4 generation and model year.
What M Performance Parts mean on an electric BMW
M Performance Parts are optional, model-specific accessories in BMW’s Original BMW Accessories range. They can change the appearance or selected equipment of a compatible car, but the accessory category does not establish that the car itself is an M Performance model.
Compatibility is especially important when shopping for parts for an i4. Check the generation, production date, body style, market and part number before ordering. A part listed for one i4 update may not fit another, and a photograph of an M Performance-equipped car does not prove that every visible component is available for every version.

Common mistakes about the badge
“M” always means a full BMW M car
BMW uses M-related branding at several levels. M Sport can be a package, M Performance can identify a distinct model variant, and BMW M identifies the dedicated high-performance line.
The newest name applies to every country
The i4 M50 launch name and the US-market 2026 i4 M60 name show why geography and model year belong in every specification. A listing without those details is incomplete.
The highest power number is always available
The 2026 US i4 M60 figures distinguish startup output from output in My Modes Sport. Always read the condition attached to a quoted number.

M-specific aerodynamic features are part of BMW’s description of M Performance models, but styling alone cannot establish the car’s drivetrain, chassis hardware or output. Verify the model designation and build specification.
An accessory creates an M Performance model
M Performance Parts are accessories. They may be fitted to a compatible vehicle without changing that vehicle’s underlying model identity.
Bottom line for electric BMW shoppers
“M Performance” on an electric BMW means a factory-defined performance model with M-focused drive, chassis and aerodynamic development. It is more than an M Sport package, but it is not automatically a full BMW M car. Use the exact model year and market—such as the launch-era i4 M50 or the US-market 2026 i4 M60—when checking power, range and equipment, and keep BMW’s announced 2027 four-motor M generation separate from today’s M Performance models.
