Approved used is a scheme label, not a universal guarantee. A manufacturer or dealer programme may combine preparation checks, a vehicle-history check, a warranty, breakdown assistance and other benefits, but the package varies by scheme and by vehicle. Before buying, obtain the exact car’s inspection record, warranty policy and list of disclosed faults. Those documents—not the badge or advert—show what is actually covered.
What “approved used” means
An approved-used programme is a seller’s or manufacturer’s process for selecting and preparing second-hand vehicles. The process can set age, mileage, provenance or condition requirements, then add checks and contractual benefits. There is no UK-wide legal definition that fixes a minimum inspection, warranty length or list of covered components for every programme.

One car advertised as approved may therefore have a different warranty provider, inspection scope, excess, claim process or breakdown package from another car carrying the same broad description. Treat the label as an invitation to inspect the terms, not as evidence that every mechanical and electrical part is protected.

What named UK schemes publish
RAC Approved Dealer example
RAC’s current Approved Dealers page, accessed on 13 October 2026, describes eligible vehicles as receiving an 82-point Approved Vehicle Preparation Standard and a vehicle-history check. It also advertises RAC Warranty and 12 months of breakdown cover. The same page presents warranty periods from three to 36 months across RAC dealer categories, so that range is not a promise that every RAC-listed car receives 36 months. The vehicle must be eligible and the exact activation and duration should be confirmed in writing.

A Chartered Trading Standards Institute audit of the RAC used-vehicle approved consumer code dated September 2025 reports a minimum three-month RAC Warranty, 12 months of RAC Breakdown including home start, and 12 months of Accident Care. The audit is a report of the scheme benefits at that date; it does not replace the policy for the car you are buying. RAC also says its dealers receive at least six audits a year. An audit frequency does not establish that an individual vehicle is defect-free.
AA Cars network example
The Chartered Trading Standards Institute’s AA Cars Approved Code Scheme page, accessed on 13 October 2026, says AA Cars listings provide access to a basic vehicle-history check. It also says some dealers have vehicles independently inspected by the AA using a 128-point inspection. “Some dealers” is important: the 128-point inspection should not be assumed for every AA Cars listing.
AA Cars member dealerships commit to a code of practice. Version 5 of that code, dated 27 February 2026, requires dealers to make the terms and conditions of additional services such as warranties clear at the point of sale, identify the accredited business providing the service, and explain conditions that could invalidate cover. The code states that additional benefits do not diminish a customer’s legal rights.

These examples are not a like-for-like ranking of all manufacturer schemes. They demonstrate why “approved” must be unpacked into separate checks, contractual cover and seller obligations.

What an approved-used warranty covers—and what it may not
A warranty is an additional contract. Neither the approved-used label nor the existence of a warranty proves that an engine, gearbox, battery, electronic module, diagnostic fee, labour charge, recovery cost or repair at your preferred garage is covered. The component list and exclusions are policy-specific.
Read these terms before purchase
- Start and end dates: establish whether cover begins at handover, after an existing manufacturer warranty, or on another date.
- Covered components: identify the named parts and whether cover is limited to listed items or applies more broadly subject to exclusions.
- Claim limits: check the maximum per claim and the total payable during the policy.
- Excess: record the amount you must pay for each accepted claim.
- Authorisation: find out whether the warranty administrator must approve diagnosis or repairs before work starts.
- Repair location: check whether repairs must use a franchised dealer, an approved network or a garage meeting specified standards.
- Maintenance conditions: note servicing intervals, approved fluids, evidence requirements and deadlines for reporting a fault.
- Exclusions: look for wear items, pre-existing faults, corrosion, accident damage, modifications, misuse and consequential losses. Do not assume any of these is excluded—or included—without the wording.
Ask for the full policy, not only a certificate or summary. If a salesperson says a part is covered, ask them to identify the clause and record the answer on the order paperwork.
Why “wear and tear” needs care
A warranty may exclude normal wear, but that contractual exclusion is separate from statutory consumer remedies. Brake pads wearing through ordinary use are Citizens Advice’s example of fair wear and tear. A failure that appears soon after purchase may still raise a consumer-rights issue even if a warranty administrator declines it; the two routes have different tests and procedures.
Checks the scheme may perform
Preparation and history checks answer different questions. A preparation inspection may assess condition against a seller’s standard on a particular date. A history check may search records for events such as theft, write-off status, mileage or outstanding finance, depending on the product used. Neither automatically predicts future reliability.

Request the evidence
- Ask which inspection standard was used, when it was completed and who signed it.
- Obtain the complete checklist, including advisories, measurements and items marked for attention.
- Ask what the history check searched for, its completion date and whether any result was referred to the seller for clarification.
- Compare the report with the advert, vehicle identification number, mileage and service documents.
- Ask for written disclosure of cosmetic damage, warning lights, previous repairs and faults that are excluded from the sale description or warranty.
An inspection point count is not a reliability statistic. No independent figure establishes a success rate or a reduction in defects attributable to approved-used schemes, so do not infer one from an 82-point or 128-point checklist.
Independent checks recommended before buying
GOV.UK’s used-vehicle guidance recommends checks that remain your responsibility unless the seller provides evidence they have been completed:
- Match DVLA details: check the registration, make, model, colour, engine details and recorded mileage against the car and its documents.
- Review MOT history: examine failures, advisories and mileage patterns. Most vehicles need an MOT each year once they are three years old.
- Check safety recalls: establish whether outstanding recall work exists and ask who will arrange it.
- Inspect the log book: confirm that the document relates to the vehicle and is not associated with a stolen vehicle.
- Confirm road-use prerequisites: insurance and vehicle tax are required before using the car on public roads.
These government checks are distinct from a dealer’s preparation standard. A seller who supplies one does not necessarily supply the others, and a completed preparation check does not guarantee future reliability.
Warranty benefits are not the same as legal rights
England
Citizens Advice says a buyer in England may have a legal right to a repair, reimbursement of repair costs, or some or all of the purchase price when a used car is faulty or does not match its description. Entitlement depends on the circumstances. Examples that can affect a remedy include a fault fully explained before sale, a defect the buyer should have noticed during inspection, damage caused by the buyer, and fair wear and tear.

The AA Cars code similarly describes consumer obligations concerning satisfactory quality, fitness for intended purpose and matching the description, while recognising qualifications for disclosed or reasonably identifiable defects and wear. This is a general explanation, not a determination of an individual dispute.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
Consumer law guidance is jurisdiction-specific. Buyers outside England should use the relevant national consumer advice service and check the contract governing the sale. Do not assume that an English explanation settles the position elsewhere in the UK.
Choosing the route when a fault appears
- Keep the advert, order form, inspection report, warranty policy, invoices and all messages with the seller.
- Notify the seller promptly and describe the symptoms, date and mileage.
- Ask whether the proposed repair is being handled as a statutory remedy, a warranty claim, or both.
- Do not authorise expensive work that the warranty requires the administrator to approve first.
- If the seller rejects responsibility, ask for the reason in writing and obtain jurisdiction-appropriate consumer advice.
Compare two approved-used cars on the same axes
Use a side-by-side record rather than comparing the word “approved.” The following fields expose differences that an advert headline can hide.

Questions to put to the seller in writing
- What exact checks were carried out on this vehicle, and can I see the dated checklist or inspection report?
- What does the history check cover, when was it completed, and were any results unresolved?
- Who provides the warranty, and what are its start date, end date, covered components, claim limit and excess?
- Which exclusions and maintenance conditions apply?
- Must the warranty administrator authorise diagnosis or repairs before work begins?
- Is breakdown cover included, how is it activated, and what assistance level applies?
- Which faults, cosmetic defects or previous repairs are disclosed and excluded from the description or warranty?
- Will every promised benefit appear on the order form or handover documents?
Written answers reduce the risk that a general scheme description is mistaken for a promise about the individual car.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every approved car has the same warranty
Fix: check the vehicle-specific policy and dates. RAC’s published three-to-36-month range illustrates why the dealer category and eligibility matter.
Confusing an inspection with a guarantee
Fix: read advisories and arrange an independent inspection if the report is incomplete or the vehicle’s condition is uncertain.
Believing a history check proves good condition
Fix: treat history and mechanical inspection as separate evidence, then verify the car against DVLA and MOT records.

Fix: notify the seller as well as the warranty provider and preserve evidence of what was advertised and disclosed.
Accepting verbal promises
Fix: have benefits, exclusions and agreed repairs written into the order or handover documents before completion.
Practical decision rule
An approved-used car is worth considering when the seller can show a vehicle-specific inspection, a credible history record, clear warranty terms, any included breakdown cover and all known defects in writing. Compare those documents with the car’s price and condition. If the seller will not provide the policy or report, the word “approved” gives you too little information to assess the risk; pause the purchase or choose a vehicle with transparent documentation.
