A six-speed gearbox gives a 250cc motorcycle one additional selectable ratio between the engine and rear wheel. That extra ratio can keep the engine nearer its useful rev range as speed changes, or provide a taller cruising gear, but it does not add engine power by itself. Whether the bike accelerates harder, cruises more quietly, saves fuel or reaches a higher top speed depends on the actual ratios, final drive, engine torque, weight, aerodynamics, road and riding technique.
The number six is therefore a starting point, not a performance guarantee. To understand the change on a particular motorcycle, look at the individual gear ratios, the total reduction through the final drive and the engine’s useful rpm band.

What the extra ratio actually changes
Engine turns, wheel turns and torque
A gearbox determines how many times the engine turns in relation to one turn of the driven wheel. In a low gear, the transmission multiplies engine torque strongly. That makes it easier to pull away, climb a hill or accelerate at low road speed, although the engine reaches high rpm quickly. In a high gear, torque multiplication is lower, but the motorcycle travels farther for each engine revolution.

Adding sixth gear gives the designer another ratio in that sequence. The new ratio might be placed between existing gears to make the steps closer, or it might be a particularly tall top gear intended for faster-road cruising. The transmission’s tooth counts, primary reduction, final-drive sprockets and wheel size all determine the result. “Six-speed” alone does not tell you the rpm at a given speed.

Close spacing versus a wide range
Closely spaced ratios reduce the change in engine speed after an upshift. During acceleration, the engine can remain nearer the rpm range where it produces useful torque, so the rider may experience smoother, more continuous drive. A wide-ratio six-speed can instead give a very low first gear for difficult terrain and a tall sixth for open roads, with larger jumps between some gears. Both designs legitimately have six speeds.
A five-speed motorcycle can have closer or better-chosen ratios than a poorly matched six-speed. The meaningful comparison is the ratio sequence and the engine’s torque curve, not the gear count printed in the specification sheet.
What a rider may notice on the road
Acceleration and overtaking
In the lower gears, an additional ratio can let the rider choose a more suitable step instead of accepting a large rpm drop after shifting. If the next gear would otherwise leave the engine below its strongest range, the extra ratio may improve the feel of acceleration. It does not create extra torque; it only helps use the torque the engine already makes.

For an overtake, the correct gear is the one that gives the engine enough rpm and wheel torque for the required response. Sixth is often unsuitable for a short, strong acceleration unless the motorcycle is already moving fast and the engine can pull that ratio. A downshift may be necessary, regardless of whether the motorcycle has five or six gears.
High-speed cruising and engine noise
If sixth is taller than fifth, the engine will turn more slowly at the same road speed when the rider selects it. Lower rpm can reduce mechanical noise and vibration and may reduce fuel consumption, but only if the engine can pull the taller ratio efficiently and the rider does not need to open the throttle substantially more. If sixth is simply another close ratio, the rpm reduction compared with fifth may be modest.
Bajaj describes the Dominar 250 in these terms: Addition of the 6th gear reduces stress on the gearbox and also aids in relaxed cruising at high speeds.
That is Bajaj Auto’s description of that model, not an independently measured result or a rule for every 250cc motorcycle.

Top speed is not automatic
A taller sixth can increase the theoretical road speed at a given engine rpm, but the engine must have enough power to overcome aerodynamic drag, rolling resistance, gradients and the motorcycle’s load. If it cannot reach the rpm needed to pull the taller ratio, top speed may stay the same or even fall. Speed limits, tires, stability and electronic or mechanical limits can also govern the result. An extra gear is therefore not proof of a higher top speed.

Lower cruising rpm can help economy in a steady, lightly loaded run. It is not a guaranteed percentage improvement. Stop-and-go traffic, hills, wind, tire pressure, payload, throttle use, fueling calibration and the final-drive ratio can outweigh any benefit from sixth gear. No controlled five-speed-versus-six-speed fuel-economy result is established for the 250cc class by the manufacturer pages cited here.

The overlaps are intentional: road grade, load, acceleration demand and engine sound determine the appropriate choice. Sixth is not a command to select it at 35 km/h; it is the upper-ratio option once the engine can run smoothly without lugging. Honda also tells the rider to change gear according to speed and conditions. See the Honda owner’s manual for the cited model.

Does sixth gear lower rpm at cruising speed?
It lowers rpm relative to fifth only when sixth has a lower transmission ratio than fifth and the final drive and wheel size are unchanged. The engine speed at a given road speed is determined by the selected transmission ratio multiplied by the primary and final reductions, then related to tire circumference. A manufacturer may use sixth as an overdrive-like cruising ratio, but not every six-speed design does so.
To answer the question for a specific motorcycle, obtain the fifth- and sixth-gear ratios and compare engine rpm at the same road speed. If the manual or instrument display supplies rpm, make the comparison on a level road with the same load and tires. Do not infer it from the number of gears or from another 250cc model.
How to compare two actual 250cc motorcycles
- Check the individual ratios. Find first through sixth, not just “six-speed.” Note whether the last ratio is clearly taller than fifth and how large each rpm drop will be after an upshift.
- Check primary and final reduction. Sprocket sizes and the primary drive can make two motorcycles with identical gearbox ratios behave differently at the rear wheel.
- Match the engine’s torque band. Compare the stated peak torque and the rpm at which it occurs, then consider how broadly the engine produces usable torque. The Dominar 250, for example, is listed at 23.5 Nm at 6,500 rpm and 27 PS at 8,500 rpm on Bajaj’s regional page.
- Define the intended use. Urban starts, steep hills, dirt tracks and steady faster-road travel reward different spacing. Suzuki says the V-Strom 250’s cam profile targets acceleration at commonly used 20–90 km/h speeds, an example of design emphasis rather than a universal class target.
- Compare matched-speed behavior. At the same road speed, observe rpm, vibration, noise and whether the engine pulls cleanly in fifth and sixth. Keep rider, load, wind and road comparable.
- Treat fuel figures cautiously. Only comparable tests using the same route, speed, weather, tires and measurement method can show a real economy difference. A brochure gear count cannot.
Safe use of the extra gear
Upshift when the engine is ready
Use engine sound, response and the manual’s guidance. An early shift into sixth can make the engine feel weak or cause lugging if road speed is low or a hill begins. Hold a lower gear when you need immediate drive, then select the higher ratio once the engine runs smoothly under the load.

For a hill, turn or overtake, select the lower ratio early enough to avoid a sudden, high-rpm correction. Match the gear to the speed and use the clutch progressively. Honda warns that downshifting at high speed can cause rear-end instability, reduce running stability and adversely affect the engine or transmission. Its maximum downshift speeds are specific to the cited model; do not transfer them to another motorcycle.
Do not copy another bike’s shift chart
The Honda ranges above are useful as an example of overlapping operating windows, but wheel size, engine tune, sprockets, tire diameter and intended use differ between motorcycles. Your owner’s manual takes priority over a generic chart or advice for another 250.
Common misconceptions
- “Six speeds means more power.” Power comes from the engine. The gearbox changes how that power reaches the wheel.
- “Sixth is always an overdrive.” It may be a tall cruising ratio, but only the actual ratio table proves that.
- “More gears always means better fuel economy.” Economy depends on load, speed, throttle, terrain, aerodynamics and calibration as well as gearing.
- “A six-speed bike must have a higher top speed.” The engine still has to pull the gearing against drag and other limits.
- “One shift schedule fits every 250.” Model manuals, not engine displacement alone, set safe operating guidance.
Bottom line
On a 250cc motorcycle, six-speed gearing gives the designer one more way to balance launch torque, acceleration and cruising speed. The practical benefit can be closer acceleration steps, a calmer high-speed cruise or simply a broader usable range, depending on the ratio design. To know what changes on your motorcycle, compare its actual ratios, primary and final reductions, engine torque band and real-world rpm at your normal speeds; the badge saying “six-speed” is not enough.
