It is not a named mechanical fault, a safety grade or a formal industry measurement. It is an umbrella judgment that can cover ride control, steering, braking, noise, software, driver assistance or the overall sense that the car does not work as a cohesive whole.
The useful part of the review is not the label itself. Look for the behavior behind it: a brake pedal that builds force late, steering that feels vague, a body that takes too long to settle after a bump, a screen that responds inconsistently, intrusive warnings or tiring wind and tyre noise. Those details tell you what the reviewer actually experienced and whether it matters for the roads and traffic you use.

“Lack of polish” is a subjective umbrella, not a diagnosis
Automotive publications use “polish” to describe refinement: how naturally the controls respond, how settled the chassis feels, how quiet and comfortable the cabin is, and how consistently the car’s software behaves. A car can be competent in one area and still receive that criticism because one or two systems feel poorly calibrated.
There is no published test procedure that produces a score for polish. Nor does the phrase establish that an electric vehicle is unsafe, unreliable or defective. It records a reviewer’s judgment about quality of execution during a particular drive. Two writers can use the same words for different shortcomings, so always read the supporting observations.

The term also does not mean every part of the vehicle is poor. A review may praise the seats, space or cabin materials while criticizing brake feel or lane-keeping behavior. “Unpolished” can therefore describe a narrow weakness rather than an overall rejection.
What reviewers are usually describing
Ride and chassis control
Ride polish is the car’s ability to absorb a bump, settle promptly and remain composed through a sequence of corners. An unrefined car may float after a dip, thump over sharp edges, roll noticeably or feel unpredictable when the surface changes. Reviewers also consider whether the suspension and stability systems suit the roads in the market where the car is sold.
GoAuto’s September 21, 2026 Australian review of the Forthing Electric and Range Extender Hybrid raised concerns about body composure and steering. The publication speculated that the chassis might not have been tuned sufficiently for Australian roads. That explanation was presented as the reviewer’s suspicion, not as a confirmed statement from the manufacturer.
Steering and brake response
Polished controls respond in a predictable, linear way: a small steering input produces a proportionate change of direction, and pedal pressure builds smoothly as the car slows. A lack of polish can mean a steering wheel that feels vague around centre, a response that changes unexpectedly, or a brake pedal whose useful stopping force arrives only deep in its travel.

In the same Forthing road test, GoAuto described steering as vague and non-linear and said brake pressure built late in the pedal travel. The reviewer found that especially conspicuous in stop-start traffic and on a twisting road. Those comments identify a tactile and confidence issue; they are not a claim that the car cannot stop within a legal or tested distance.
Noise and everyday comfort
Electric motors are quiet enough that tyre, wind and drivetrain sounds can become more noticeable. A reviewer may call a car unpolished when those noises intrude on conversation, music or long-distance concentration. The relevant question is not whether the cabin is silent, but whether the sound level and character feel out of keeping with the vehicle’s price and class.
GoAuto noted tyre noise and electric-motor whine in the Forthing range-extender hybrid. Top Gear’s 2026 BYD Dolphin Surf review discussed wind noise that became tiring on motorways. Both observations concern comfort and refinement rather than a diagnosed fault.
Controls, displays and software
Touchscreens and switchgear contribute to polish when they react consistently and make common actions easy to complete. Delayed responses, missed touches, menus that behave differently from one attempt to the next, or functions buried in distracting screens can make a vehicle feel unfinished even when the hardware works.

GoAuto reported that the Forthing’s screen could respond quickly at one moment and slowly at another. That inconsistency is more informative than simply saying the interface is “bad”: it tells you to look for repeatability during your own drive, particularly when changing climate, audio or navigation settings.
Driver-assistance calibration
Lane-keeping, collision warnings and other assistance systems are judged not only by whether they operate, but by how smoothly and appropriately they intervene. False or poorly timed alerts, abrupt steering corrections and warnings that interrupt audio can make a technically capable system feel immature.
Wheels’ 2026 review of the Zeekr X AWD said its driver-assistance systems still needed tuning. The examples included warnings interrupting audio and lane-keep assist behavior. The same review praised the car’s cabin refinement, steering and chassis balance, showing how a vehicle can be polished in its core driving hardware while lacking final calibration in a limited set of electronic systems.

Some writers use polish to describe whether the separate parts add up to a satisfying, predictable experience. Acceleration may be strong, yet the transition off the accelerator, steering weighting, ride and assistance behavior may not feel coordinated. “Engagement” is even more subjective: it concerns whether the driver feels connected and comfortable, not whether a car meets a particular performance number.

Top Gear summarized its BYD Dolphin Surf driving impressions as a “lack of polish and engagement.” Its supporting discussion covered ride behavior, motorway wind noise, acceleration and driver assistance, while also praising cabin room and seat comfort. The phrase therefore described the driving character, not the whole vehicle.

How to interpret a reviewer’s wording
1. Find the concrete behavior
Underline every observation that follows the phrase. “Lack of polish” by itself is too broad to guide a purchase. “The brake pedal develops force only near the bottom of its travel” is actionable; “it feels a little unfinished” is not until the writer explains why.
2. Judge frequency and consequence
Ask whether the issue appeared once or repeatedly, and whether it affected a routine situation. A delayed screen tap is an irritation. Steering that changes response mid-corner, or a warning that repeatedly interrupts the driver, has a larger effect on confidence and concentration. Reviews do not always quantify frequency, so note the language they use: “occasionally,” “consistently,” “especially in traffic” and similar qualifiers matter.

Some judgments are personal. One driver may prefer heavier steering or stronger regenerative braking, while another prefers a lighter response. A description of non-linear steering, a pedal that behaves differently through its travel or a warning that cuts off audio is more specific than a preference for a particular setting. Treat both as useful, but do not mistake taste for a universal defect.

4. Check the test context
Road surface, weather, traffic, vehicle load, tyre choice and drive mode can change impressions. The Forthing review was conducted in Australia and connected some chassis concerns to local roads, but explicitly as speculation. The Omoda E5 account came from an introductory Australian drive and noted that the short sample was insufficient to assess some broader capabilities or separate every driving mode. A launch-drive impression should not be read as a complete long-term reliability assessment.
5. Look for strengths in the same review
Balanced coverage tells you whether the criticism is concentrated or widespread. The Zeekr X review praised several core attributes while reserving its polish criticism for assistance calibration. The Dolphin Surf review paired concerns about driving refinement with positive comments on room and seats. This balance helps you decide whether the shortcoming is acceptable for your priorities.

- It is not a crash-test result. A reviewer’s feel for steering, braking or assistance is separate from an independent safety assessment.
- It is not proof of unreliability. A slow screen response or intrusive warning may be a calibration problem without predicting long-term component failure.
- It is not a measured performance statistic. No formal numerical benchmark defines automotive polish, and acceleration, range or price figures should not be converted into a polish score.
- It is not a verdict on every trim or software version. Reviews describe the vehicle tested. Equipment, tyres, drive modes and later software updates can change behavior, so verify the specification and version available to you.
A practical test-drive checklist
Use the review’s criticism as a list of checks rather than a conclusion. A structured drive can reveal whether the same behavior matters to you.
- Drive the roads you normally use. Include a rough section, smooth urban streets and a faster road if possible. Notice how quickly the body settles after a bump and whether noise rises with speed.
- Repeat low-speed stops. In traffic, apply the brake gently, then more firmly. Check whether deceleration builds predictably or arrives late in the pedal travel.
- Make ordinary steering corrections. Try a straight road, a roundabout and a bend. Look for a dead area around centre, sudden response or a need for constant correction.
- Test accelerator lift-off and regeneration. Lift gradually and then quickly. Decide whether the transition is smooth and whether the regenerative-braking strength suits your driving.
- Use the screen while stationary. Tap the same control more than once, adjust climate and audio, and observe whether response time is consistent. Do not operate menus while moving.
- Leave assistance systems in their normal setting for part of the drive. Note the timing and tone of lane-keeping and warnings, whether they alter steering smoothly, and whether alerts interrupt audio unnecessarily.
- Repeat the drive in another mode if available. The Omoda E5 review’s warning about limited mode evaluation is a reminder that a short drive may not reveal every calibration.
- Record what is a deal-breaker. A buyer sensitive to motorway noise may reject a car that another buyer finds comfortable. Rank the observed issues against your own routes and passengers.
Comparing two cars when both are called unpolished

When should “lack of polish” change your buying decision?
Give the phrase substantial weight when the named issue affects a task you perform every day: uncertain braking in congestion, repeated steering corrections on your roads, tiring noise on your commute or assistance alerts that you cannot comfortably tolerate. These are usability concerns even if the car is mechanically sound.
Give it less weight when the criticism is a mild preference, appears only in a mode you will not use, or concerns a feature you can disable without losing an important safety function. A car with excellent seats, space, ride or cabin refinement may still suit you if the criticized system is peripheral to your priorities.
The fairest conclusion is specific: “This car’s lane-keeping calibration is intrusive,” or “its brake pedal feels unusual in traffic.” That is more useful than declaring the entire vehicle unfinished.
Bottom line
In an electric-car review, “lack of polish” means the writer found one or more parts of the experience less refined, consistent or cohesive than expected. Read past the phrase to the reported behavior, test that behavior in your own conditions, and keep it distinct from formal safety, reliability and performance evidence. The label can describe a narrow calibration issue or a broad driving impression; only the details reveal which one.
