It turns a compatible jump starter’s 12V output into a socket for powering a compatible 12V accessory. It is not used to jump-start a car through the car’s cigarette-lighter socket, and it does not necessarily recharge the jump starter.
What the adapter is for
Some portable jump starters have a 12V DC output alongside their battery clamps and USB ports. A cigarette-lighter-style adapter gives that output a standard vehicle-accessory socket, so you can plug in compatible 12V equipment.
For example, the NOCO GB70 manual describes connecting its cable to the unit’s “12V OUT” port, attaching the female 12V AUX socket, and plugging in a standard 12V device. The GB70’s stated limit for this output is up to 15A. That figure applies to the GB70 example only; it is not a universal jump-starter rating.
What can you plug into it?
You can power an accessory designed for a 12V vehicle socket if its voltage, plug, and current draw are compatible with the jump starter and adapter. Check the manual for the output’s maximum current or power rating, and check the accessory’s requirements. The shape of the connector—and the jump starter’s peak cranking-amp rating—does not tell you how much the accessory output can supply.

- Confirm the jump starter port is labeled as an output, such as “12V OUT.”
- Check the jump starter’s manual for its output limit and the correct cable.
- Check that the accessory is designed for the output voltage and does not exceed the listed limit.
- Make sure the plug fits securely; stop if it is loose or incompatible.
Can you jump-start a car through the cigarette-lighter socket?
No. The adapter’s 12V accessory output is for powering devices, not delivering the high current needed to crank an engine. Use the jump starter’s designated battery clamps and follow the instructions for both the jump starter and the vehicle. The NOCO GB70 manual treats the accessory socket and battery-clamp jump-starting procedure as separate functions.
Does the adapter recharge the jump starter?
Not unless the particular cable and port are explicitly designed for charging the jump starter. A 12V accessory output supplies power to a connected device; a charging input accepts power to recharge the jump starter. Check the markings and manual rather than assuming a cable’s purpose from its cigarette-lighter-style connector.

Some jump starters have a separate, manufacturer-designed way to recharge from a vehicle after a successful start. Projecta’s Rapid Recharge Technology (RRT) is one model-specific example: its instructions for compatible units say to leave the clamps connected for 40 seconds after starting. That is a separate feature, not a general function of a cigarette-lighter adapter. See Projecta’s IS920C FAQ for its instructions.

Manufacturers may use similar names for different cables or charging roles. Projecta’s IS1400 product page, for example, lists a “Cigarette Lighter Charger” among its included accessories and separately describes USB charging and RRT. The name alone does not establish whether an unidentified adapter is an input, an output, or intended for another use. Check the cable’s ends, port labels, and the instructions for your exact model.
