Xiaomi Auto has said Europe will be its first overseas destination, with sales planned to begin in the second half of 2027. That is more specific than founder Lei Jun’s July 2024 promise to go global “at the right time,” but it is not a country-by-country launch schedule: the first European markets, prices and export models have not been confirmed in the available reporting.
What did Lei Jun mean by “the right time”?
In July 2024, during a visit to France for the Paris Olympics, Xiaomi founder, chairman and CEO Lei Jun spoke with Xiaomi fans. One asked whether the SU7 might be available in France before 2030. Gizmochina reported his reply: “OK, our goal is to be among the top five in the world, so we will definitely go global at the right time.” (Gizmochina)
It was an expression of intent, not a commitment to launch in France before 2030. Lei did not name a first overseas market or give a launch date.
When does Xiaomi now plan to sell cars overseas?
The timetable became more concrete in subsequent statements. In March 2025, Xiaomi president William Lu told Jiemian that the company hoped to go overseas in 2027, while stressing that its immediate priority was to establish a strong position in China. His reasoning was that a Chinese automaker would struggle to do business abroad without a solid home-market footing. (Jiemian)

At Xiaomi’s Q2 2026 results call, Lu said the EV overseas plan was on track and that the company would go overseas in the second half of 2027. He also said Xiaomi had visited many countries that year, that overseas dealers were approaching the company, and that it was working on market access and compliance. Is Europe the first destination, and will France be included?
Xiaomi Auto’s international website went live on August 26, 2026, displaying the announcement “Xiaomi Auto Officially coming to Europe in 2027,” according to CnEVPost. That identifies Europe as the company’s announced first overseas destination. It does not establish which European countries will launch first or whether France will be among them. The reviewed report did not identify a France-specific date. (CnEVPost)
As described in that report, the site showcased the brand and its technology but did not offer a local vehicle configurator or purchase portal. Models shown there should not be read as a confirmed export lineup. No local prices, precise launch date or initial export models were announced in the report.
What has to happen before overseas sales begin?
Lu’s comments and CnEVPost’s account point to several pieces of preparation behind a foreign-market launch:

- Market access and compliance: Xiaomi must meet the legal and regulatory requirements of the markets it enters.
- Product adaptation: Vehicles and related offerings may need adjustment for local-market requirements.
- Sales and service coverage: The company needs sales channels, retail networks and the support infrastructure to serve customers.
CnEVPost also reported a company-described sequencing approach: developed markets before developing economies, mid-to-high-end vehicles before midrange vehicles, and right-hand-drive markets before left-hand-drive ones. Treat this as a reported strategy, not a confirmed country launch order; the report did not name the first markets or models.

The overseas plan follows the launch of Xiaomi’s first smart EV, the SU7 series, in March 2024. The domestic launch and network help explain Lu’s emphasis on establishing a stronger position at home before expanding abroad. They do not, by themselves, confirm which vehicle Xiaomi will export or how its overseas sales and service network will be organized.
