FC is the second-generation model and FD is the third. Enthusiasts use them as shorthand for the generation, not as trim names or as acronyms that expand into words.
What FC means
FC is the designation Mazda uses for the second-generation Savanna RX-7. Mazda’s corporate history describes this car as the “second-generation, or FC model, Savanna RX-7,” developed as a pure sports car balancing driving dynamics and comfort. Mazda introduced it in October 1985. Its rotary engine was the 13B. Mazda’s history gives a figure of 185 horsepower for the model as described in its 1980–1989 history. That is a manufacturer figure for the model in general, not a guarantee for every market or model year.
What FD means
FD is the shorthand for the third-generation RX-7. Mazda’s own 1990–1999 history states that “the model was popularly known as ‘FD’.” Mazda launched the car in 1991; its rotary timeline dates the domestic launch to December 1991. The official designation used in Mazda’s March 2002 production notice is FD-3S. Mazda’s 1990–1999 history gives the output as 255 ps, a metric figure that is roughly equivalent to 252 horsepower.
Mazda’s March 25, 2002 notice said the company expected FD-3S production to end in August 2002. That was a statement of expectation at the time, not a current forecast, and exact production dates can differ by market.

Why the meaning depends on context
The letters are only a reliable guide inside RX-7 discussion. Outside that context, check the following before assuming a meaning:
- The manufacturer name. A listing that says Mazda plus RX-7 points to the generation codes.
- The full model or chassis code. A code such as FD-3S is more specific than “FD” alone.
- The surrounding terms. If the post also says RX-7, the generation meaning is almost certainly intended.
- Model year and market. Launch dates are manufacturer dates, and availability and labeling can vary by country.
If none of these clues are present, ask the seller or poster for the make, model, and complete designation instead of guessing.

Why the codes are not trim names
Mazda’s historical material uses FC and FD as model-series designations. It does not present them as trim levels or as acronyms. A short code therefore does not tell you the equipment package, body variant, or engine tune of a particular car. For those details, the full model designation and the vehicle’s documentation are needed.

When someone says “FC” or “FD” about cars, read it as “second-generation RX-7” or “third-generation RX-7” and confirm the make and full code if the context is unclear.
