Often, yes—but the fix depends on the suspension that was installed. Adjustable coilovers may be raised within their maker’s limits; fixed lowering springs usually have to be replaced with springs specified for the car; factory air suspension may offer ride-height controls. Identify the parts before estimating the work, and plan on an alignment after suspension changes.
Identify the suspension before choosing a fix
Ask the owner or shop for installation records and part numbers. A visual check may offer clues, but layouts vary, so confirm the parts by their markings or a vehicle-specific parts catalog.
| Current setup | Typical route toward stock height | What affects the work |
|---|---|---|
| Adjustable aftermarket coilovers | Adjust them using the manufacturer’s procedure and only within its permitted range. | Adjustment design and access, seized parts, setup requirements, and alignment. |
| Fixed lowering springs | Install factory-height springs matched to the exact vehicle and inspect related suspension parts. | Vehicle-specific strut layout, hardware condition, tools, and safe spring handling. |
| Factory air suspension | Use the model-specific ride-height controls and troubleshooting instructions. | Vehicle configuration, operating mode, load, faults, and owner-manual instructions. |
Adjustable coilovers
Coilovers have a height-adjustment mechanism, but the correct adjustment point and safe range depend on the brand and model. For example, Ksport’s instructions specify adjustment through the lower mount on applicable systems, warn against adjusting the spring perch on those systems, and set minimum thread-engagement requirements. Those directions apply to Ksport hardware, not all coilovers. Do not guess at collars, preload, shock stroke, or thread engagement.
Fixed lowering springs
An adjustment collar cannot raise a fixed lowering spring. To return to stock height, the usual route is to fit springs specified for the exact year, make, model, and trim, and restore any related components required by the vehicle’s service instructions. If a strut is disassembled, parts may need to be transferred or replaced. There is no single procedure that applies to every suspension design.

Factory air suspension
Some factory air-suspension systems can vary ride height through vehicle controls. Chevrolet describes this capability for available Air Ride Adaptive Suspension; the available settings and operating conditions depend on the model, and faults can prevent adjustment. Consult the owner’s manual for the specific vehicle rather than assuming every air-suspension system works the same way.
How difficult is it to raise a lowered car?
Adjusting coilovers
Adjustment can be relatively straightforward for someone familiar with the exact system, but it still requires following the maker’s procedure and limits. Incorrect adjustment can leave the suspension improperly set, so unfamiliar hardware is a good reason to use a shop.

Replacing springs or struts
Spring and strut work is more involved and can require specialized equipment. KYB’s tool and safety guidance says tool needs vary by vehicle and some jobs require a coil spring compressor. A compressed spring stores substantial energy: KYB warns that an unexpected release can cause severe injury or death. Eibach’s installation guidance also calls for a proper spring compressor when removing springs or disassembling a strut.
When lifting a vehicle, use properly positioned jack stands and follow the vehicle’s jack-point instructions. KYB states, “Always use high-quality jack stands,” and warns not to rely solely on a tire-change jack. Consider professional installation if you lack suitable lifting or spring-compression equipment, cannot identify the installed parts, or encounter damaged, seized, or modified components.

Alignment, ride quality, and local rules
Plan for a wheel alignment after suspension work. KYB says alignment is always required after replacing struts to ensure handling and tire wear. Lowering can reduce suspension travel and increase the risk of bottoming; substantial changes can also affect ride quality, tire wear, and alignment, according to Tire Rack’s technical guide. Its general rule of thumb that most cars can be lowered about 1.5 inches without complications is not a universal specification or a guide to reversing a modification.
Legal and inspection requirements depend on where the vehicle is registered. In Québec, the SAAQ’s rules for relevant lowered vehicles include alignment to manufacturer specifications, adequate suspension travel, and an inspection process for compliant modified vehicles; its page was last updated August 28, 2025. See the SAAQ lowered-vehicle requirements for that jurisdiction, and check the rules that apply where your car is registered.

What information is needed for a reliable estimate?
There is no dependable vehicle-specific estimate of labor, cost, or difficulty without the year, make, model, trim, current suspension parts, and modification history. A shop can use part numbers and records to determine what must be changed; location also matters when checking legal compliance. SAE International’s J2492_201910 recommended practice covers ride-height modification for automobiles, light trucks, and SUVs, but its accessible page provides scope and bibliographic information rather than the full standard text.
