Lifter tick is a description of an engine noise, not proof that a lifter has failed. Causes can include low or aerated oil, incorrect viscosity, contamination or debris, restricted oil supply, a lifter that leaks down, or another valve-train component. The fix depends on locating the sound and diagnosing the specific engine; it may be as simple as correcting an oil issue or may require mechanical inspection and repair.
What causes lifter tick in an engine?
A lifter, also called a lash adjuster in some engines, is part of the valve train. A ticking sound near the top of the engine may come from a lifter, but similar mechanical noise can come from other valve-train parts or even accessories. Manufacturer service information identifies several possible causes, and the relevant procedure varies by engine.
Oil level, condition, or viscosity
Low oil, oil with the wrong viscosity for the engine, or poor-quality or contaminated oil can contribute to noise in some applications. For certain AFM V8 engines, GM also lists oil aeration and a low internal lifter reservoir level among possible causes. These are engine-specific findings, not a checklist that applies identically to every vehicle. GM bulletin 10-06-01-007E describes the covered engines and the conditions for its oil-and-filter correction.
Debris or restricted oil supply
Noise affecting several valve-train adjusters can point to an oil-feed problem rather than multiple failed lifters. GM preliminary service information describes debris—including sealer or degraded filter material—plugging a cylinder-head oil-feed orifice and reducing oil supply to the valve train. For that described condition, it calls for comparing lower-end and upper-end oil pressure. The GM preliminary information is not a universal diagnostic procedure; use the service information for the exact engine.

Lifter leak-down or another valve-train problem
A lifter with excessive leak-down may tick, but a technician should verify the fault before replacing it. Depending on the engine, inspection may also need to consider rocker arms, pushrods, valve bridges, or other valve-train parts. Caterpillar’s mechanical-noise troubleshooting treats valve-train components and accessories as distinct possible sources, reinforcing why the sound alone cannot identify the failed part. Caterpillar engine troubleshooting guidance provides examples of that broader approach.
Can lifter tick be fixed?
Often, yes—but the appropriate repair depends on the cause and the vehicle. Correcting an oil-level or oil-condition problem may address noise when that is the diagnosed cause. A restricted oil passage may require finding and clearing or repairing the restriction. A confirmed faulty lifter may need replacement, while another source of mechanical noise calls for a different repair.

Do not assume an oil change, thicker oil, or an additive will fix every tick. GM’s oil-and-filter recommendation applies only to the specific AFM engines and conditions in bulletin 10-06-01-007E. The same bulletin directs technicians to other information for similar symptoms on non-AFM engines.
How to narrow down the cause
- Note when and where the noise occurs. Record whether it happens only at startup or continues, where it is loudest, and whether it began after an oil change or engine work. These clues help guide inspection, but do not establish the diagnosis.
- Check the oil against the engine’s requirements. Verify the level, condition, and specified viscosity using the owner’s manual or applicable service information. Do not apply another engine’s oil threshold or correction procedure to your vehicle.
- Locate the sound before naming a failed part. GM bulletin 10-06-01-003C says, “First, the location of the tick must be determined (exhaust or intake, front or rear engine bank).” It recommends a suitable listening device, such as chassis ears or a stethoscope, and inspection of suspect lifters. A listening tool helps localize a noise; it cannot confirm the cause by itself. See the official GM bulletin.
- Check oil supply and pressure when indicated. If noise appears to involve several adjusters, have the oil supply and pressure investigated using the exact engine’s procedure. The GM preliminary guidance for its described oil-feed restriction compares lower-end and upper-end pressure; it does not provide a generic pressure limit for all engines. The bulletin’s procedure is condition-specific.
- Inspect components and choose the repair from the findings. Follow model-specific service information to inspect suspected lifters and related parts. Escalate persistent or widespread noise, abnormal oil pressure, or evidence of mechanical damage to a qualified technician; pressure testing and valve-train inspection may require specialized tools or engine disassembly.
When does the pattern of the tick matter?
| What you observe | What it may help investigate | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Tick occurs only at startup | A symptom pattern addressed by some engine-specific service guidance. | That the lifter is faulty or that a particular repair applies. GM’s startup-tick bulletin is limited to specified AFM V8 engines. GM bulletin 10-06-01-007E |
| Tick persists or is widespread | Oil supply, measured pressure, and multiple valve-train components may warrant investigation. | That all noisy lifters have failed. GM preliminary information |
| Noise is localized to one area | Careful sound localization and inspection of the relevant area. | That the sound necessarily comes from a lifter. GM bulletin 10-06-01-003C |
| Noise followed maintenance or engine work | Oil condition and possible oil-feed or debris issues, guided by the specific engine’s service procedure. | A particular cause without inspection. GM preliminary information |
Why the exact engine matters
Service bulletins address defined engines, years, and symptoms; they are not universal repair recipes. Before a repair is selected, identify the vehicle’s year, make, model, and engine, then use current applicable service information. The cited manufacturer documents are technical guidance for specified conditions, and service information may be superseded. No universal oil-pressure limit, replacement procedure, failure rate, or repair cost follows from these sources.
