What Credit Score Do You Need to Lease a Car?

There’s no universal credit-score minimum for a car lease. Scores around 670 to 700 are useful guideposts for better odds or terms, but the lender decides.

There is no universal minimum credit score for leasing a car in the U.S. Each leasing company or lender sets its own approval criteria. As a practical guide, a FICO Score of 670 or higher can improve the odds of favorable terms, while Experian and Chase point to around 700 or higher as a stronger target. Neither number guarantees approval or represents an industry-wide cutoff.

What score is a useful target for a car lease?

Think of 670 and 700 as guideposts for better odds or terms, not a pass/fail line. The lender makes the decision, and the score shown in a consumer app may not be the score it uses.

Score guidepost What it indicates
670 or higher Experian classifies this as good credit in its lease guidance and says it can make favorable terms more likely. It does not guarantee approval. Experian
Around 700 or higher Experian and Chase describe this as a useful target for a stronger chance of qualifying or getting favorable terms—not a universal minimum. Experian; Chase
Below these guideposts A lease may still be possible, but the applicant could face a higher payment or financing cost, more money due upfront or a deposit, and fewer vehicle choices. Lenders may consider other parts of the application. Experian; Capital One

These score guideposts should not be confused with the average score of people who leased. Experian reported an average score of 751 for new car leases in Q1 2024. An average describes past originations; it is not a lender’s minimum. Experian also reported an average of 686 for used-car loans in that period, but a loan is a different product and that figure is not a direct lease comparison. Experian

In its Q1 2025 report, Experian said over 86% of new leasing was Prime+ under its VantageScore 4.0 risk-tier framework. That describes the distribution of lease originations, not the score required by a particular lender. Experian

Can you lease a car with bad credit?

Possibly. A lower score does not automatically rule out leasing, but it may make approval harder or change the terms offered. Depending on the lender and application, you could be asked for more money upfront, offered a higher payment or financing cost, or have fewer vehicles available to choose from. No general score threshold can predict what a particular lessor will approve.

Ways to strengthen an application or adjust the deal

  • Compare lenders, since approval criteria and the scores they use differ.
  • Consider a less expensive vehicle, which may change the amount being financed through the lease.
  • Ask whether a larger down payment or a trade-in with positive equity would improve the proposed deal.
  • Ask whether the lender accepts a creditworthy cosigner. A cosigner is responsible if the primary lessee does not pay.

These options may help with the application or deal structure, but none guarantees approval. Experian; Capital One

What else do leasing companies consider?

A general-purpose credit score is only one part of an application. Capital One notes that some dealers use auto-specific scores, including FICO Auto Scores, and that income and down payment may also be considered. Lender and dealership criteria vary. Capital One

Before relying on a score from a credit-monitoring app, ask the prospective lessor which credit bureau and score model it uses, and whether a quoted approval or payment is conditional on a credit check. The score you see may differ from the score used in the lease decision.

How to compare lease offers when credit affects the terms

A lower score can affect both ongoing payments and the amount due upfront. Compare offers using the full deal, not just the monthly payment:

  • Total amount due at signing, including any deposit or fees.
  • Monthly payment and lease term.
  • Money factor or equivalent financing cost, if disclosed.
  • Annual mileage allowance and charges that apply if you exceed it.
  • Fees and the lender’s stated credit conditions.

There is no standardized lender-by-lender pricing tier for a given score. Ask each lessor to explain the quoted terms and what could change after its credit review. Chase; Capital One

Will applying for a lease affect your credit?

Experian says a lease application typically triggers a hard inquiry, which can cause a small, temporary dip in your score. Lease payments may help build credit if the leasing company reports the account and you pay on time. Missed payments or default can hurt your credit. Ask the specific lessor whether it reports lease accounts and payments. Experian

How to approach a lease application

  1. Check your credit reports and the score available to you before applying, but treat it as an estimate of what the lender may see.
  2. Contact the leasing company or dealer and ask which bureau and score model it uses, whether it considers auto-specific scores, and whether any quote is conditional.
  3. Compare the complete written lease terms, including upfront costs, payment, term, mileage allowance, financing cost and fees.
  4. Confirm whether the lessor reports lease payments to credit bureaus so you understand how on-time payments may affect your credit history.

Approval criteria and market conditions change, and broad consumer guidance cannot predict the decision of every manufacturer-affiliated finance company, dealer, or lender. Confirm current requirements and terms with the prospective lessor.
