They let you influence gear selection without operating a clutch pedal. The exact controls and how long manual selection stays active depend on the vehicle.
What the plus and minus symbols do
The symbols usually appear beside a gear selector or on steering-wheel paddles. Press or pull “+” to request an upshift; press or pull “−” to request a downshift. In some cars, selecting the symbols activates a manual-shift mode within the automatic transmission.
This does not necessarily make the car a conventional manual. In the owner guidance described here, the driver selects or requests gears through the automatic transmission; the instructions do not call for a driver-operated clutch pedal.
How manual selection differs by vehicle
Manufacturers use different controls and rules for entering and leaving manual selection. These examples are specific to the named owner guidance, not universal procedures.

Why a car may refuse a shift request
A paddle or selector input is a request, not necessarily a command the transmission must follow. Ford’s 2025 SelectShift guidance says the vehicle will not shift if the requested gear would push engine speed beyond its limits. Other vehicles may apply their own protections or operating rules, so a missed shift does not by itself mean the control is broken.

When using “+” and “−” may help
Ford recommends its manual-shift feature for engine braking, hilly or mountainous roads, and towing a trailer. That is Ford’s guidance for the cited manual, not a rule for every make and model. Check your vehicle’s instructions before choosing a gear for a particular road or load.
A lower gear can change how the car responds, but there is no universal promise that selecting one will improve acceleration, fuel economy, or safety. The result depends on the vehicle and driving conditions.

Find the procedure for your car
Check the owner’s manual for your exact make, model, and year. Look for terms such as “manual shift mode,” “paddle shifter,” “manual gear selection,” or “SelectShift.” Confirm how to activate the controls, which positions they work in, whether the mode times out, and what limits apply. Speed thresholds and return-to-automatic behavior differ between vehicles, so do not rely on another car’s instructions.
