Recognizable examples include the Dodge Polara, Chrysler New Yorker, Dodge Coronet R/T, Plymouth GTX, Road Runner, Super Bee and Challenger—but availability depended on model year, trim and engine option. The 440 Six-Pack (called 6-BBL or Six Barrel by Plymouth) was a particular triple-carburetor version, not a feature of every 440-equipped car.
What cars had a 440 engine?
Chrysler introduced the 440 in its large-car line for 1966. It later offered the engine in performance models, and the 440 also continued in service after the peak muscle-car years. These are representative examples, not a complete year-by-year fitment guide.
Large passenger cars
Early applications named in Thomas Murphy’s historical report for AutoRestorer include the Dodge Polara and Chrysler New Yorker. The 440 was also used across large Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth cars, according to the Mopar Enthusiast Network summary.
Performance and muscle cars
Murphy identifies the Dodge Coronet R/T and Plymouth GTX among the performance models that received the higher-performance 440 as the engine’s role expanded. Other recognizable 440-equipped examples cited by the Mopar Enthusiast Network include the Dodge Charger, Challenger and Super Bee, and the Plymouth Road Runner and GTX. The exact combinations varied by year and trim; a model name alone does not establish that a particular car came with a 440.

Later uses
The 440 outlasted the most familiar muscle-car period. The Mopar Enthusiast Network says production continued through 1978 and notes use in trucks and motorhomes as well as passenger cars. The sources reviewed here do not establish a complete list of later vehicle models.
What was the 440 Six-Pack?
The Six-Pack was a 440 configuration with three two-barrel carburetors. Dodge marketed it as the Six-Pack; Plymouth used 6-BBL or Six Barrel. They refer to the triple-carburetor setup, but exact model availability changed from year to year.

Examples of Six-Pack applications named in Murphy’s AutoRestorer report include the Plymouth Road Runner, Dodge Super Bee, Dodge Challenger, Plymouth ’Cuda and Plymouth GTX. Treat those as examples, not a guarantee that each model offered the setup in every year or trim. The report describes Six-Pack availability as extending as late as 1972; its application list emphasizes performance models from 1969 onward.
440 engine specifications and horsepower
The 440 was an RB-series Chrysler big-block V8; RB is commonly expanded as “raised block.” AutoRestorer describes it as the long-stroke member of the B/RB family. The Mopar Enthusiast Network specification table gives a 4.32-inch bore and 3.75-inch stroke.

These figures are tied to different years and configurations, so a single headline horsepower number cannot describe every 440. Rating method matters too: Murphy specifically identifies the late-1978 255-hp figure as net horsepower with accessories attached. When comparing cars, include model year, carburetion and rating convention rather than treating peak-era output as universal.
How long was the 440 produced?
The reviewed references place 440 block years in groups spanning 1966–72 and 1973–78, and the Mopar Enthusiast Network summary says production ended in 1978. The Six-Pack configuration did not last as long as the engine family: Murphy’s 1997 report says, “Although the Six-Pack was available as late as 1972, the 440 carried on through 1978.”

How to verify a 440 in a specific car
If you are evaluating a car for purchase, documenting a restoration or checking a claim that it left the factory with a 440, verify the exact vehicle rather than relying on the model badge.
