The electric Mercedes-Benz CLA makes a strong case for itself: a sleek four-door shape, a modern cabin, a long official range estimate and rapid DC charging. But its range figures depend on market and test cycle, and the UK car reviewed by T3 author Mat Gallagher also left him wanting better software, driver assistance and a few comfort features.
What makes the electric CLA appealing?
The CLA is a four-door coupe built on Mercedes-Benz’s Modular Architecture (MMA). It also marks a shift in naming: this electric car uses the familiar CLA name rather than an EQ prefix. In Gallagher’s reviewed configuration, the cabin centers on a 14-inch display, with a driver’s display and an optional passenger display. Mercedes-Benz’s MB.OS integrates MBUX, MB.Drive and MB.CHARGE functions; equipment and screen availability vary by market and trim.
The appeal is not just the design. The CLA’s official range and charging claims put it among the more ambitious electric sedans on paper, while the cabin aims to make navigation, vehicle controls and charging services part of one connected system.
How far can the Mercedes-Benz CLA go?
There is no single range figure that applies everywhere. Mercedes-Benz publishes U.S. EPA estimates and European WLTP figures, which use different test cycles and should not be compared as equivalent predictions of everyday driving.

The real result depends on factors such as drivetrain, configuration, weather and driving conditions. Gallagher says he achieved around 350 miles in winter in the car he tested. That is his account of one vehicle in his use, not a standardized test result or a promise of what every owner will achieve.
How quickly does it charge?
Mercedes-Benz lists up to 320 kW of DC charging power for the U.S. CLA versions, alongside a quoted 22-minute charge from 10% to 80%. Those are manufacturer figures; actual charging time depends on the vehicle, charger and conditions.

For the German-market cars, Mercedes-Benz says the CLA 250+ can add 285–325 km of WLTP range in ten minutes at a specified 500-amp DC fast-charging station. The corresponding claim for the CLA 350 4MATIC is 275–315 km. These are range-replenishment claims under the stated charging conditions, not a general ten-minute result at any public charger.
Mercedes-Benz lists an 85 kWh usable battery capacity for the European CLA 250+ and CLA 350 4MATIC. Its German-market specification gives the 250+ a WLTP combined consumption figure of 14.1–12.2 kWh/100 km; the company notes that driving style and other factors affect consumption.

For home charging, Mercedes-Benz recommends a wallbox or AC charging station with a Mode 3 cable, which it says can shorten charging times and improve recharge efficiency. Before choosing an EV wallbox charger, check connector compatibility, the home’s electrical capacity and installation requirements, and local product availability.
What are the drawbacks?
Gallagher’s criticisms are specific to the UK specification he reviewed and should not be read as a universal equipment list. He says that car had no head-up display option or heated steering wheel, and he found its wing mirrors small. He also felt the software and driver-assistance experience needed more polish.

His configuration had level 2 driver assistance, and he noted that more capable options were not available in the UK. Availability and equipment differ by country, so buyers should check the exact local trim and options rather than assume the reviewed car represents every CLA.

The clearest comparison is between the two powertrains offered in the cited U.S. and German-market figures. The rear-wheel-drive CLA 250+ has the higher published range figures; the 4MATIC variants add all-wheel drive but have lower published range in both sets of figures. The values below belong to different markets and test cycles, so compare within each market rather than across columns.

The available figures do not support a reliable numerical ranking against competing models. For a useful cross-shopping comparison, match market, test cycle, drivetrain and trim; then check real-world range evidence, charging curve and 10–80% time, standard versus optional cabin equipment, assistance-system availability, price and passenger or cargo practicality.
How strong is the case overall?
The CLA’s strengths are clear in the evidence available: Mercedes-Benz claims long range and high peak DC charging power, and Gallagher reports strong winter range in his own use. Its weaknesses are more about execution and specification: the reviewer wanted more polish from the software and assistance systems, and some comfort equipment was missing from the UK car he drove. The balance may look different in another market or trim, so checking the local specification is essential.
Mercedes-Benz Group says the CLA won the 2026 European Car of the Year award with 320 points, 100 ahead of the runner-up. The company says the vote covered 34 new models and six finalists, with a jury of 59 automotive journalists from 23 countries. Those are the automaker’s award-announcement details, rather than an independent assessment of the car’s everyday ownership experience.
