The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL is not returning to production. The car behind the headline is the Saoutchik Torpedo S, an independently presented coachbuilt grand tourer built around a Mercedes-AMG GT donor and styled as a modern homage to the 1950s icon. Saoutchik says it plans to make 15, with bespoke finishes for each owner; its published performance figures are maker claims, not independently verified test results.
What the Torpedo S is—and what it is not
Saoutchik describes the Torpedo S as a contemporary interpretation of the design language and spirit of the Mercedes 300 SL. It is a Saoutchik project, not a new Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, a factory reissue, or an announced revival by Mercedes-Benz. The design and engineering work is credited on Saoutchik’s product page to Ugur Sahin Design.
The distinction matters: the 300 SL is the styling reference, while the Mercedes-AMG GT is the modern donor platform. The Torpedo S is therefore best understood as an independent coachbuilt conversion rather than a new model in Mercedes-Benz’s factory lineup.
How it is built and commissioned
Saoutchik identifies the Mercedes-AMG GT as the donor vehicle and describes the Torpedo S as a full-carbon-built grand tourer with carbon-fiber body panels and bespoke components. The company says its design team works with each owner on paint, trim, features, and accessories. Its stated estimate is around eight months for the conversion after the donor arrives; that is Saoutchik’s estimate, not a guaranteed delivery schedule.

“Mercedes-AMG GT” covers a range of factory cars, not one fixed specification. Mercedes-AMG’s current GT Coupé page lists different configurations, including GT 63 and GT 55 versions with different outputs. The Torpedo S’s published 625 hp figure should not be mistaken for the standard output of every possible donor.
Saoutchik’s published Torpedo S figures
The figures below are published by Saoutchik on its product page. The page does not state a publication year for them, and they should be treated as manufacturer claims rather than independently measured results.

For context only, Mercedes-AMG lists the factory GT 63 Coupé at 430 kW, 800 Nm, and 0–100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, and the GT 55 at 350 kW, 700 Nm, and 3.9 seconds. Those are specifications for those factory models; they do not verify or define the Torpedo S’s performance.
Production, orders, and what remains unknown
Saoutchik says production will be limited to 15 cars. That is the company’s stated cap, not an independently audited count of completed vehicles. A Mercedes-Benz Worldwide report published in 2025 described the car as taking orders and said first customer cars were expected the following year, but that report’s event chronology is inconsistent with its own date. It is not confirmation of current order availability or completed deliveries.

The Torpedo S pairs a modern AMG GT base with a visual and historical reference to the 300 SL. That makes the project different both from a classic 300 SL and from a standard factory AMG GT: its bodywork and owner-selected details are part of a limited coachbuilding commission, while its underlying vehicle is a modern donor. Without a stated price, verified delivery record, or independent performance testing, the available information does not support a meaningful cost-of-ownership or value comparison with either car.
