You can safely plug in only equipment whose voltage, continuous current and peak demand fit the specific outlet in your Tesla. A plug that fits is not proof of compatibility. Tesla uses several different power systems—USB, low-voltage accessory sockets and, on some Cybertruck configurations, household-style AC outlets—with different limits. Identify the outlet, read the device rating label, then confirm the limits in the current owner’s manual for your exact model year, trim and market.
Start with the outlet type, not the plug
Most confusion comes from treating every Tesla socket as the same. They are not interchangeable.

USB ports
USB ports are intended for electronics designed to charge over USB, such as phones, tablets, cameras and approved storage devices. Their output is measured in watts and can vary by vehicle and manufacture date. A USB-C connector does not make a port a general-purpose power source for a household appliance.

Low-voltage accessory outlets
These are the vehicle’s automotive accessory sockets, often called 12-volt outlets even though newer vehicles can use a different operating voltage. Their rating is expressed in continuous and peak current. They are suitable only for accessories designed for that automotive low-voltage supply. Tesla’s manuals specifically caution against plugging in non-Tesla accessories, including power inverters, because they can interfere with vehicle electronics.

AC outlets
Some Cybertruck configurations include NEMA 5-20 120-volt outlets in the cabin and cargo bed, plus a 240-volt cargo-bed outlet. These are genuine AC outlets, but their combined limits, operating conditions and availability depend on configuration, market and manufacture date. They still are not equivalent to an unlimited household circuit.
Published outlet limits by Tesla model
The figures below come from the cited Tesla owner manuals and apply only to the described model, configuration and manual edition. Tesla can change equipment and specifications by year, software, market and trim.
| Vehicle or outlet | Published limit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Model Y low-voltage outlet | 12 A continuous; 16 A peak | The cited manual places an outlet in the rear of the center console and another on the left side of the rear trunk for the described vehicle. |
| Model X low-voltage outlet | 12 A continuous; 16 A peak | The manual warns against non-Tesla accessories, including inverters. An inverter must support 16 V DC input if used where permitted by the vehicle documentation. |
| Model S, archived 2012–2020 manual | 11 A continuous or 150 W continuous; 15 A or 180 W peak | These older figures must not be replaced with newer-model numbers. The outlet and connector can become hot. |
| Model 3 | 12 A continuous; 16 A peak reported in Tesla’s manual search result | Confirm the current manual for the vehicle’s model year before relying on this value. |
| Model Y USB ports | Approximately 15 W | The cited manual says output varies by manufacture date. |
| Cybertruck center-console USB-C | Up to 65 W per port | Power is reduced per port when all three USB-C ports are in use. Use USB 3.0-compliant cables and stay within the port ratings. |
Never add the continuous and peak figures together. Continuous current is the level the outlet can sustain; peak current is a short-duration ceiling for startup or transient demand. A device that draws more than the continuous rating can overheat the socket, trigger protection or cause vehicle faults even if it starts successfully.
How to check a device before plugging it in
- Identify the outlet. Determine whether you are using USB, a low-voltage accessory socket or an AC outlet. Check whether several sockets share one combined limit.
- Read the device label or manual. Find input voltage, running current or watts, and—if it contains a motor, compressor or heating element—startup or surge demand.
- Match voltage exactly. A 120-volt AC appliance cannot be connected directly to a low-voltage DC socket. A USB device should be connected to a USB port or a charger designed for that port.
- Compare continuous demand. For DC equipment, use the stated current. For AC equipment, use watts or amps at the outlet voltage. The device’s normal running demand must stay within the outlet’s continuous limit.
- Account for sharing. On Cybertruck, paired 120-volt outlets have combined limits. Multiple devices can reduce available power or cause an interruption even when each device looks acceptable alone.
- Check the vehicle manual. Confirm the exact model year, trim, market and manufacture-date notes. Tesla’s manuals can prohibit an accessory category even when its electrical numbers appear acceptable.
- Test conservatively. Stay with the vehicle during the first use, keep the plug and socket visible, and stop immediately if the connector becomes unusually hot, the vehicle displays an alert, or the accessory behaves erratically.
For a simple calculation, current equals watts divided by volts. A 60-watt device on a 12-volt system would require about 5 amps under ideal conditions, before conversion losses. That calculation does not override Tesla’s warning about a particular accessory type, nor does it account for startup surges.

What belongs on a Tesla USB port?
Use USB ports for equipment designed to accept USB power: phones, tablets, handheld game systems, cameras, small fans and similar low-draw electronics, provided the charger and cable are rated appropriately. Cybertruck’s three center-console USB-C ports can provide up to 65 watts each in the cited manual, but the available power is reduced when all three are used. A cable or device that requests more than the port can supply may charge slowly, disconnect or fail to charge.
The Cybertruck glovebox USB-A port is described for media and Dashcam or Sentry Mode storage. Do not treat it as a high-power general outlet. On the cited Model Y, USB output is approximately 15 watts and varies by manufacture date, so a USB-C plug alone does not imply Cybertruck-level output.
What can go in a low-voltage accessory outlet?
Only use automotive accessories whose input specification matches the vehicle’s low-voltage supply and outlet rating. Examples can include a modest phone charger, a low-power tire inflator or another accessory explicitly rated for the vehicle socket, but the exact demand and startup current still matter. Check the label rather than relying on the product category.

The cited Model Y and Model X manuals specify 12 amps continuous and 16 amps peak. Tesla also says inverters used in vehicles manufactured after approximately November 2021 need to support 16 volts DC input. The manuals recommend not plugging non-Tesla accessories, including inverters, into the low-voltage outlet because they can interfere with vehicle electronics. Follow that warning even if an inverter appears to fit and its advertised wattage seems below the current limit.

Older Model S
The archived 2012–2020 Model S manual is materially different: up to 11 amps or 150 watts continuously, with 15 amps or 180 watts peak. It warns that the outlet and accessory connector can become hot. Do not apply the 12-amp/16-amp figures from newer vehicles to an older Model S.
Model 3
Tesla’s manual search result reports a 12-amp continuous and 16-amp peak rating, plus the warning against non-Tesla accessories and inverters. Because the cited PDF page was not available for line-level verification, use the current manual for your model year as the controlling source.
Can you plug a regular appliance into a Tesla?
Not into a USB port or low-voltage accessory socket. A household appliance with a standard AC plug requires a properly rated AC outlet or an officially compatible Tesla power adapter. Do not use a plug converter to force a 120-volt appliance into a low-voltage socket; a physical adapter cannot create the required voltage or safe protection.

Heating elements consume substantial continuous power. Do not infer that a heater, kettle, hot plate or hair dryer is safe because it has a familiar plug. Check its wattage against the exact AC outlet’s continuous limit, and do not use it on a low-voltage socket or through an inverter that Tesla’s manual advises against.

Power tools, compressors and refrigerators
Motors and compressors can draw a large starting surge. A tool that runs below the published limit may still trip protection when it starts. The Cybertruck manual describes surge capability for many tools, motors and compressors up to 110 LRA, but that does not authorize exceeding the stated continuous limits. Check both running and startup specifications.

Safety and load control
Tesla says to use only UL-listed devices with the Cybertruck AC outlets. Outlets are controlled through the vehicle’s Outlets & Mods controls. Power can stop when the vehicle is unoccupied, the high-voltage battery is low, temperatures are very low, an AC charging cable is connected, or a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) or overcurrent protection trips.
The Keep Outlets On feature shuts off after 12 hours or when battery energy falls below 5 percent. Sudden loss of power can damage equipment or cause data loss, so save work and use equipment with its own battery or an uninterruptible power supply when an abrupt shutdown would matter.
Can you use an inverter in a Tesla?
Tesla’s cited Model Y and Model X manuals caution against non-Tesla accessories, including power inverters, in the low-voltage outlet. Do not treat an inverter as the default way to obtain household AC power. In vehicles manufactured after approximately November 2021, Tesla says an inverter used with the low-voltage system must support 16 volts DC input; the Model X manual gives the same requirement. This technical requirement does not cancel the manuals’ broader warning about non-Tesla accessories.
If your goal is AC power, use a built-in AC outlet where the vehicle provides one, or investigate Tesla’s documented charge-port adapter for a compatible configuration rather than improvising a low-voltage conversion.
Tesla Outlet Adapter: a separate charge-port accessory
Tesla documents a Tesla Outlet Adapter that can power devices from the charge port on compatible configurations. Its maximum draw is 2,400 watts at 120 volts. Tesla describes it for small- to medium-sized appliances or tools and excludes equipment with high-wattage heating elements or large, heavy-duty motors.
The adapter cannot power a home electrical panel and is not a bidirectional inverter. On some configurations it works with the Gen 3 Mobile Connector; Tesla says not to use it with other Tesla charging products such as the Gen 2 Mobile Connector. Compatibility and availability vary by vehicle and market, so verify the exact configuration before purchase. Do not assume that a charge-port adapter supported by one Tesla works on another.
What to do if something goes wrong
- Heat: Unplug the accessory immediately if the plug, socket or cable becomes unusually hot. Let it cool and inspect for discoloration, melting or looseness before using the outlet again.
- Vehicle alert or malfunction: Disconnect the accessory. Tesla’s manuals instruct owners to unplug a non-Tesla accessory if it causes alerts, malfunctions or excess heat.
- Power interruption: Reduce the load, disconnect other devices and check whether the vehicle is unoccupied, below its battery threshold, charging, very cold, or showing a GFCI/overcurrent trip.
- Repeated trips: Stop using that device on the vehicle. A repeated trip can indicate excessive startup demand, a damaged cable, moisture, a faulty appliance or an incompatible accessory.
- Data or equipment protection: Save files and use battery-backed equipment if the device cannot tolerate sudden loss of power.
Quick decision guide
| Your device | Appropriate Tesla connection | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| Phone, tablet or camera | USB port with a suitable cable and charger | Port wattage, cable rating and whether other USB devices share output |
| Automotive low-power accessory | Low-voltage outlet, only if the manual allows the accessory category | Voltage, continuous amps, peak amps and Tesla’s model-specific warnings |
| Household 120-volt appliance | Cybertruck AC outlet or compatible Tesla Outlet Adapter, if supported | Running watts, startup surge, combined outlet limit and vehicle configuration |
| Heater, cooking appliance or heavy motor | Usually unsuitable for low-voltage outlets; AC use requires a verified rating match | Continuous and startup demand, heat, moisture and automatic-shutoff risks |
| Power inverter | Not a default recommendation for a low-voltage socket | Tesla’s current manual, 16-volt input requirement where specified and accessory warnings |
The safe answer is therefore vehicle-specific: match the device’s electrical requirements to the exact outlet and follow the current Tesla manual’s warnings. If any rating, configuration or compatibility detail is unknown, do not connect the device.
