What Are the Negatives of the Chevy Trax?

The redesigned Chevy Trax’s key drawbacks include mixed crash-test results, modest acceleration, a firm ride, limited rear-seat amenities and model-specific recalls.

The redesigned Chevrolet Trax’s main drawbacks are a mixed crash-test record, no all-wheel-drive option in the 2024 comparison, modest acceleration, reviewer-noted engine noise and firm ride, and limited rear-seat conveniences. Those tradeoffs do not make every Trax unsafe or unreliable: the details depend on model year, test, build date, trim, and individual vehicle.

How do the Trax’s crash-test results compare?

The ratings are mixed, not uniformly poor. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the Trax a Good rating in the small-overlap front test, but a Poor overall rating in its updated moderate-overlap front test. That updated moderate-overlap rating applies to 2024–2026 models; IIHS reports Good results for driver measures but Poor rear-passenger head and neck performance. These are different tests and seating positions, so reducing them to a single “safe” or “unsafe” label loses important detail. IIHS 2025 Trax ratings IIHS 2024 Trax ratings

For the cited 2024 test, the updated side rating is Acceptable and applies to 2024–2025 models built before January 2025. IIHS lists lane-departure warning and prevention as standard and blind-spot detection as optional. Check the rating and equipment for the exact year and build when comparing vehicles; an optional feature is not necessarily fitted to the particular Trax for sale.

Is the Trax slow or uncomfortable to drive?

Acceleration and power delivery

Edmunds recorded 0–60 mph in 9.1 seconds during its 2024 Trax comparison, published February 28, 2024. Its assessment was that the result was not fast but adequate for the class. Consumer Reports search-result excerpts also describe uneven power delivery. These are review findings, not a guarantee of how every driver will experience the vehicle. • Covers routine maintenance through advanced repairs, making it the go-to resource for keeping your vehicle running reliably.

Drivers who regularly merge with a full load, climb steep grades, or expect brisk acceleration should test-drive the Trax on the kinds of roads they use. A published acceleration result is a useful point of comparison, not a substitute for that drive.

Engine noise and ride firmness

Consumer Reports excerpts characterize the engine as notably noisy and the ride as stiff. Edmunds’ 2024 comparison also noted that some wind and road noise remain at higher speeds. Cabin-noise tolerance and ride comfort are subjective, so listen and ride on rough pavement as well as a smooth route before deciding.

What practical equipment or space tradeoffs should buyers know?

In the 2024 comparison, Edmunds reported that the Trax had no all-wheel-drive option, and lacked rear-seat cupholders and rear air vents. The same comparison gives cargo volume as 25.6 cubic feet and describes the Trax as roomy, so the shortcomings are specific equipment compromises rather than evidence of a generally unusable cabin. Specifications and equipment can vary by model year, trim, and market; verify the vehicle’s feature list and cargo needs directly. Edmunds comparison republished by AP

If AWD is a requirement for your climate, roads, or use, confirm availability before shopping rather than assuming it can be added on a higher trim. For frequent rear-seat passengers, check whether the missing vents and cupholders matter in everyday use, and compare the specific alternatives you are considering.

Do Trax reliability complaints prove it is unreliable?

No broad reliability verdict is established by the information available here. Consumer Reports says its reliability history draws on subscriber surveys, but detailed ratings are not available in the cited material. Owner posts and complaint aggregations are self-reported; by themselves, they do not verify a defect or show how common it is across vehicles. A complaint count without a meaningful comparison to the number of vehicles in use is not a failure rate.

For a used Trax, assess the individual car: review its service records, check its VIN for open recalls, and arrange an independent inspection if appropriate. Do not treat a handful of public complaints as proof that every vehicle has the same problem.

Which Trax recalls should owners check?

Recall campaigns apply to particular vehicles, not automatically to every Trax of a model year. The cited recall listing identifies these issues and remedies:

Recall Affected issue Listed remedy
23V744000, November 6, 2023 Certain 2024 Trax vehicles may have software in the Virtual Cockpit Unit Module that causes the instrument panel to go blank at startup or while driving. No-charge dealer or over-the-air software update.
26V539000, August 20, 2026 Certain 2025 Chevrolet Trax vehicles, among other GM models, may show a distorted or blank rearview-camera image. No-charge dealer inspection and camera replacement if necessary.

The listing says affected VINs for recall 26V539000 became searchable on NHTSA.gov on August 20, 2026, with owner notification expected to begin September 16, 2026. Search the specific vehicle’s VIN using the official NHTSA recall lookup, then follow the instructions for any open campaign. The recall listing is available at Cars.com Trax recall information. A model-year match alone cannot confirm whether a particular vehicle is affected or whether repairs are complete.

How should these drawbacks affect a buying decision?

The most consequential checks depend on how you will use the SUV. Prioritize the IIHS rear-seat result if you often carry passengers in back; confirm AWD availability if it is essential; and test the acceleration, ride, and cabin noise against your own expectations. Then check the actual trim’s rear-seat equipment and the VIN’s recall and service history.

The Trax may still suit a buyer who values its reported cargo room and can accept its performance and equipment compromises. Compare specific vehicles and model years rather than assuming every Trax has identical ratings, features, recall status, or condition.
