These seven Chevrolet and GMC C/K examples stand out for different reasons: an early recessed grille, a work-ready four-wheel-drive stance, unusual cab proportions, or the clean lines of a later single-cab pickup. The selection follows SlashGear’s subjective list, rather than a measured ranking.
“Square Body” is the colloquial name for the third-generation Chevrolet/GMC C/K trucks. Chevrolet dates the era’s debut to 1973; the seven models here run from a 1974 Chevrolet C10 Silverado to a 1987 Chevrolet R20 Scottsdale.
What counts as a Square Body?
The label refers to the third-generation Chevrolet and GMC C/K trucks, whose squared-off bodywork distinguished them from the generations before and after. Chevrolet’s heritage timeline says the era began in 1973 and that, with updates, Square Bodies continued until 1989. SlashGear’s list defines its official C/K range as 1973–1987, so its 1987 example is the final year within that article’s scope—not necessarily the end of every Square Body carryover truck. Chevrolet’s heritage timeline provides the broader date range.
MotorTrend calls the third generation the “Rounded Line” generation and labels its pickup-history section 1973–1983; that is a separate, narrower scope for its account. Chevrolet also notes that the crew cab arrived with the 1973 Square Body era. Those differing labels and cutoffs describe different scopes, rather than a single universally applied end date. MotorTrend’s truck-history retrospective offers additional context.

Seven Square Body trucks with distinctive looks
The selections below are best read as seven different design cases, not a ranked beauty contest. Their appeal can be compared through front-end treatment, cab and bed proportions, stance, trim, and early-versus-late styling.
1. 1974 Chevrolet C10 Silverado
This early-generation half-ton draws attention to the recessed egg-crate grille, a front-end detail SlashGear says continued through 1974. Its appeal is the face: the grille gives the truck a distinct, recognizable look without relying on later trim or accessories.
Rank #2
- Revell Model Kit #14576, Skill Level 4, Contains 74-Parts, Recommended for ages 12 and up
- High-rise four-wheel-drive suspension. Detailed small-block Chevy V-8 engine.
- Old-school spoke “wagon” wheels with oversize off-road tires.
- All-new decal sheet.
- Molded in white and clear with soft black tires. Paint and glue required(not included).
2. 1976 Chevrolet K20
The K20 is the list’s four-wheel-drive, three-quarter-ton choice. SlashGear singles out its prominent mirrors and work-ready impression. Those are subjective styling cues, but they help explain why this example reads as more purposeful than polished: its presence comes from utility-minded details and stance.
3. 1980 Chevrolet Big 10
SlashGear’s example pairs a cared-for Big 10 with pearlescent paint and a tonneau cover. It is a reminder that a truck’s appearance depends partly on its condition and presentation, not just its model badge. The paint and cover are features of the pictured example, not universal Big 10 specifications.

4. 1980 GMC Sierra Classic crew cab
This large crew-cab Sierra Classic makes cab proportions the main event. Its long, imposing shape suggests work-crew utility, a less common look than a regular-cab pickup. SlashGear notes that the configuration is niche in taste; its visual impact is precisely its size and presence.
5. 1981 Chevrolet C20 Silverado Camper Special
The C20 is a three-quarter-ton model, while the C10 is a half-ton. SlashGear also notes four engine choices for its 1981 example, but those mechanical details explain the truck’s specification rather than its appearance. The Camper Special earns its place here as a distinctive trim-and-model combination within the Square Body range.
Rank #4
- MPC 1977 Dodge Warlock Pickup 2T 1:25 Scale Model Kit
6. 1984 GMC K-1500 Sierra Classic
This single-cab, four-wheel-drive Sierra Classic brings together squared-off body lines, steel bumpers, and running boards. Those details give it a more finished look than a bare work truck while keeping the proportions compact and upright. Its appeal comes from the balance between trim and a straightforward pickup shape.
7. 1987 Chevrolet R20 Scottsdale
The R20 Scottsdale is SlashGear’s late-era selection. Its place at the end of the list reflects the article’s 1973–1987 definition of the official C/K Square Body range. Chevrolet’s broader heritage timeline, which says updated trucks continued until 1989, is why 1987 should be understood as this list’s endpoint rather than an uncontested cutoff for all carryover models.

How to choose the look that suits you
Rather than treating one truck as objectively best, consider which design feature matters most to you:
- For an early front end: the 1974 C10 Silverado and its recessed egg-crate grille.
- For a purposeful four-wheel-drive stance: the 1976 K20 or 1984 K-1500 Sierra Classic.
- For standout proportions: the 1980 Sierra Classic crew cab.
- For a finished, customized presentation: the cared-for 1980 Big 10 example with pearlescent paint and a tonneau cover.
- For a late-era model: the 1987 R20 Scottsdale, with the article’s 1987 cutoff kept distinct from Chevrolet’s broader timeline.
Buying or restoring one: check the exact fitment
These seven examples span multiple years, models, trims, and cab or drivetrain configurations. If you are sourcing Chevrolet C/K Square Body restoration parts, confirm the specific part’s application against the truck’s year, model, trim, and configuration before buying. The examples here do not establish that any generic replacement part fits every C/K. SlashGear discusses restoration and replaceable parts, but no universal compatibility is established.
