iOS 26 shipped on September 15, 2025, and its CarPlay update is available now on compatible iPhones and vehicles. The biggest changes are a Liquid Glass redesign, compact incoming calls, Messages Tapbacks and pinned conversations, CarPlay widgets, Live Activities, and vehicle-dependent display and video features. It is an improvement to standard CarPlay—not a universal conversion to CarPlay Ultra or a new vehicle operating system.
What appears on your dashboard depends on your iPhone, vehicle, display, app, language, region and automaker implementation. Apple documents those variations in its iOS 26 feature guide.

Liquid Glass changes the look, not every car’s capabilities
CarPlay adopts Apple’s Liquid Glass visual language, with clearer interaction areas in Dashboard views and updated app presentation. Apple also lists light, dark and clear icon appearance options. The redesign is primarily visual and organizational: it does not automatically add climate controls, radio controls or other vehicle functions to an older head unit.

Screen ratio, resolution, shape and the automaker’s CarPlay implementation affect how the redesign is arranged. Two vehicles running the same iOS 26 iPhone can therefore look different. Apple’s general CarPlay guidance is available at Apple Support.
Calls and Messages are less disruptive
Compact incoming calls
Incoming calls use a smaller presentation instead of taking over the entire CarPlay screen. You can keep an upcoming turn or other navigation information in view while deciding whether to answer. This changes the presentation of calls; it does not replace CarPlay’s existing calling and Siri controls. Apple demonstrates the behavior in its WWDC25 CarPlay session.
Tapbacks
When a message arrives, you can respond with a quick Tapback such as a thumbs-up or heart. This is a constrained reaction, not unrestricted touchscreen typing. Siri’s established message-reading and voice-response workflow remains the appropriate way to compose or send a new message; see Apple’s Siri-in-the-car guide.
Pinned conversations
Conversations pinned in Messages on the iPhone can appear more prominently in CarPlay, making frequent contacts easier to reach. Pinning is configured in Messages on the phone; it is not a separate CarPlay contact database.

How CarPlay widgets work
Widgets sit beside the CarPlay Dashboard and provide glanceable information from apps that specifically support a CarPlay widget presentation. They are not a copy of the entire iPhone Home Screen, and installing iOS 26 does not make every iPhone widget available in the car. Apple’s developer documentation explains that apps can expose widgets suitable for CarPlay and that the number of widget stacks depends on the vehicle display: CarPlay for developers.
Examples you may see
Depending on the app, region and active data, examples include weather or destination information, sports scores, rideshare progress, flight status, delivery progress, calendar details or battery information. Set up widgets while parked
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap General, then CarPlay.
- Select the connected vehicle.
- Tap Widgets, then Add Widgets.
- Follow the onscreen instructions.
- Reorder or remove widgets from the same menu.
- Optionally enable Smart Rotate or Widget Suggestions.

A supported Live Activity can appear automatically on the CarPlay Dashboard when an event begins on the iPhone. If the Dashboard is not visible, CarPlay may present an alert as a notification. Examples include a live sports event, rideshare journey, delivery, or travel update.

Live Activities differ from static widgets because they update during an active event. In CarPlay, Apple emphasizes a small, glanceable presentation rather than a full interactive app screen. Developers must provide suitable CarPlay presentations; otherwise the system can fall back to compact views. Availability also depends on the app, an active event, notification settings and Focus modes. See Apple’s ActivityKit documentation and the Live Activities segment of WWDC25.
Smart Display Zoom is vehicle-dependent
Smart Display Zoom resizes the CarPlay interface for certain display sizes and shapes, helping layouts fit unusual or larger screens. It is not a universal zoom control. Apple’s developer presentation describes it as a configurable CarPlay setting, with supported apps resized automatically: WWDC25 CarPlay session.
If you do not see the setting, your vehicle or head unit may not support the required display configuration. iOS 26 alone cannot add that hardware capability.
What “video in CarPlay” really means
Apple’s CarPlay developer page describes AirPlay video in the car for compatible vehicles when the vehicle is not being driven. The iPhone app must support AirPlay video, and the car must provide the required vehicle and safety-state integration: Apple CarPlay developer overview.

This is not universal Netflix, YouTube or other streaming access from every CarPlay display, and it is not a permission to watch while moving. iOS 26 lays the groundwork for parked video playback in supported vehicles; it does not provide a universal video mode through an iPhone update alone. Standard CarPlay and CarPlay Ultra are different
Apple discusses ordinary CarPlay and CarPlay Ultra together because both receive the iOS 26 visual and app improvements. Ultra is nevertheless a deeper automaker-integrated system that can extend across driver displays and expose vehicle functions such as climate controls. It requires a participating automaker and compatible vehicle; updating an iPhone does not activate it in an ordinary CarPlay car.

- An iPhone that supports and is running iOS 26 or later.
- A vehicle or head unit that already supports CarPlay for the standard update-based improvements.
- An installed app that offers a compatible widget or Live Activity for those features.
- Vehicle and app support for parked AirPlay video.
- A supported display configuration for Smart Display Zoom.
Wired versus wireless CarPlay changes how the phone connects but does not by itself guarantee or exclude every new feature. Apple warns that availability can vary by iPhone model, region, language and carrier. Apple Intelligence is not required for the core CarPlay redesign, calls, Tapbacks, widgets or Live Activities, although other iOS 26 features may have separate hardware requirements: iOS 26 feature guide.

Troubleshooting missing features
Widgets do not appear
- Confirm the iPhone is connected to CarPlay.
- Configure widgets on the iPhone at Settings > General > CarPlay > [vehicle] > Widgets, rather than on the car display.
- Check whether any installed app offers an eligible CarPlay widget.
- Disconnect and reconnect CarPlay after saving the configuration.
- Only later, if necessary, remove and re-add the vehicle under Settings > General > CarPlay.
Live Activities are missing
- Verify that the app supports Live Activities and that an event is currently active.
- Check the app’s notification and Live Activity permissions on the iPhone.
- Review Driving Focus and other Focus settings that may suppress alerts.
- Reconnect CarPlay and test with a supported event.
If Apple’s screenshots look different from your dashboard, the cause may be a different aspect ratio, vehicle implementation, CarPlay configuration, Ultra integration or software availability. Apple’s images are not a promise that every compatible car has the same layout.
Is iOS 26 worth installing for CarPlay users?
For existing CarPlay owners, the practical reasons to update are the less obstructive call screen, glanceable widgets and Live Activities, quicker Message reactions, pinned conversations and the refreshed interface. Those improvements require no new purchase when the iPhone and vehicle already meet the compatibility requirements.
Do not buy a new vehicle or head unit solely to obtain the ordinary iOS 26 update. A separate purchase makes sense only if you specifically need CarPlay in a vehicle that lacks it, a different display, wireless connectivity, vehicle-dependent Smart Display Zoom, parked video support or CarPlay Ultra. Configure features while parked and use voice or steering-wheel controls whenever possible; glanceable design does not eliminate the need for attentive driving.
