In Pinion’s Motor.Gearbox.Unit (MGU), that integration replaces the usual motor-plus-rear-derailleur arrangement with electronic shifting through a 9- or 12-speed gearbox. It can simplify the external shifting hardware, but claims of universally smoother riding, greater efficiency, or lower ownership costs are not established by independent comparisons.
What is a mid-mounted e-bike gearbox?
It is a transmission built into the central drive unit rather than a conventional motor paired with a cassette and rear derailleur. Pinion’s MGU combines a brushless electric motor with a gearbox and electronic shifting. The manufacturer presents it as a compact integrated drive system; the exact bike may still use either a chain or a belt to transfer power to the rear wheel. Pinion MGU product page
How the MGU gearbox works
Pinion describes the gearbox as two sub-units connected in sequence, using spur gears whose combinations create the available ratios. The MGU is offered in configurations with 9 or 12 gears. Pinion says its electronic system uses torque and cadence sensing to manage shifts, including shifts while riding under load, while stationary, and across multiple gears at once. These are manufacturer-stated capabilities, not an independent finding that every rider will experience smoother shifting. Pinion MGU technology
Published gear range and torque figures
Gear range describes the spread between the lowest and highest ratios. A wider range can provide more choice between climbing and faster riding, but it does not by itself determine whether a particular bike is suitable: the exact gearing and complete-bike setup matter.

Pinion also states that the MGU can deliver up to 160 Nm of torque at the rear wheel in the first four gears. That figure is specific to those gears and is a manufacturer specification; it should not be treated as a general rear-wheel torque figure for every gear or as directly comparable to motor torque figures from other systems. What integration changes—and what it does not establish
With the gearbox inside the central drive unit, the bike does not use the conventional exposed rear derailleur-and-cassette arrangement for shifting. The electronic system’s stated ability to shift under load or while stopped may also be useful in situations where a rider wants to change ratios without first building momentum. However, the available specifications do not prove that the MGU is categorically smoother, more efficient, lighter, more durable, or less costly to own than a conventional mid-drive and derailleur system. Those comparisons require independent, like-for-like evidence.

Does a gearbox e-bike need less maintenance?
Not maintenance-free. The MGU user manual specifies a gearbox oil change every 10,000 km in its 2023 edition. Service directions can change, so owners should follow the current manual and service guidance for their exact system. The external chain or belt remains part of the drivetrain and still needs appropriate inspection, cleaning or care, and eventual replacement. Pinion MGU user manual (2023 edition)
How to compare MGU-equipped bikes
The gearbox is only one part of a complete e-bike. Pinion describes equipped bikes with either belt or chain drive, so compare the specific model and its intended use rather than assuming every MGU bike has the same setup. Pinion e-bike range

- Gearing: Check whether the bike has the 9-speed or 12-speed configuration and whether its stated range suits your terrain and riding.
- Shifting functions: Confirm the functions available on the exact bike, including whether any automatic shifting features are included.
- Belt or chain: Check which external drive the bike uses and understand the care and replacement needs for that configuration.
- Fit and use: Assess the frame, battery, components, intended riding (such as commuting, trekking, or mountain biking), and local availability.
- Service access: Ask whether qualified service for the MGU is available near you and what the current service schedule requires.
What the launch figures do—and do not—tell you
In its 2023 launch announcement, Pinion described 48 V technology, approximately 85 Nm motor torque, peak power up to 600 W (800 W for S-pedelec versions), and assistance up to 400%. These are dated manufacturer launch specifications, not verified specifications for every current model or market. Pinion also cautions that output-shaft torque is not directly comparable with conventional mid-motor torque because the MGU integrates a gearbox.
