Microsoft is a new multiyear partner of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team, announced January 22, 2026. The team lists Microsoft as a Principal Partner—not its title sponsor. PETRONAS remains the Title Partner.
What Microsoft’s partnership with Mercedes F1 includes
The announcement describes Microsoft Azure and its AI capabilities supporting high-performance computing and data work at the factory and trackside. Named uses include simulation, performance analysis, race-strategy modelling and analytics shared across teams.
Microsoft 365 and GitHub already support engineering and operational workflows at the team’s Brackley and Brixworth headquarters and at the track, according to the announcement. The team says it plans to expand its use of Microsoft 365. The team’s partner page likewise describes cloud and AI support for race engineering, operations and collaboration.
These are the technologies and intended uses the companies announced, not independently measured improvements in race results. The announcement links the partnership to the 2026 F1 regulation changes and frames electrification, efficiency and sustainability as defining themes of the new era.

Principal Partner is not the same as Title Partner
Mercedes’ partner directory identifies Microsoft as a Principal Partner and PETRONAS as the Title Partner. The distinction is the team’s sponsorship designation; it does not describe the scope or seniority of Microsoft’s technology deployments. The team’s official partner directory lists both labels.
Why the deal is data-focused
Microsoft’s January 22 announcement says each Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 car carries more than 400 sensors and generates over 1.1 million data points per second. Those are company-published figures; the sources cited here do not establish independent auditing. They help explain the announcement’s emphasis on turning data into analysis for engineering, performance and strategy.

The announcement presents the partnership as a way to bring cloud and enterprise AI into work where decisions are made under tight time constraints. Toto Wolff, the team’s CEO and Team Principal, said the collaboration would support “faster insights, smarter collaboration and new ways of working.” That describes the intended value, rather than a published measure of lap-time gains.
