The four-mile failure was reported as an individual L87 teardown from a GM-buyback 2023 Cadillac Escalade. The Drive said a connecting-rod component came loose while the harmonic balancer was being removed and reported a teardown theory that a poorly installed wrist pin contributed to the failure. That proposed explanation applies to this engine only; it is not GM’s confirmed explanation for every L87 failure.
What happened to the Escalade engine
The Drive published the account on February 3, 2025, describing a newly made 6.2-liter L87 V8 removed from a 2023 Cadillac Escalade that GM had bought back. According to that report, the engine failed after approximately four miles of driving.

During removal of the harmonic balancer, a piece of the connecting rod reportedly came loose. The teardown notes attributed the visible failure to a connecting rod, while commentary proposed that a wrist pin had been installed incorrectly. The report also said the push rods and lifters did not show major damage.

Those observations are a publication’s account of one engine. They do not establish that every L87 failure involves a wrist pin, a connecting rod, or the same sequence of damage.

What the teardown does—and does not—prove
An individual mechanical finding
A broken or displaced connecting-rod component explains the immediate mechanical event described in the teardown: the piston-and-rod assembly could no longer transfer combustion force normally, and the engine suffered catastrophic internal damage. The reported condition of the valvetrain suggests that the visible damage in this example was concentrated lower in the engine rather than being a general failure of every moving assembly.
Not a confirmed fleet-wide root cause
The wrist-pin installation explanation was presented as a theory for this particular engine. The available report does not document a GM engineering determination that improper wrist-pin installation caused the failure, nor does it show that the same defect was present across recalled engines.
How the four-mile case differs from GM’s recall findings
GM’s Part 573 recall filing describes a broader population of L87-equipped vehicles and identifies different supplier-related conditions. It says engine-teardown analysis found two primary potential causes:

- Rod-bearing damage associated with sediment on connecting rods and crankshaft oil galleries.
- Crankshaft dimensions or surface finish outside specification.
GM said those conditions can damage bearings, lead to loss of propulsion and result in engine failure. The filing does not state that either condition caused the specific four-mile Escalade engine described by The Drive. The teardown report and the recall filing therefore represent separate evidence tracks: one is a single-engine mechanical account, while the other addresses manufacturing conditions identified across a vehicle population.
Which vehicles were covered by the original recall?
GM’s filing covered certain 2021–2024 model-year vehicles equipped with the L87:
| Brand | Models identified in the filing |
|---|---|
| Cadillac | Escalade and Escalade ESV |
| Chevrolet | Silverado 1500, Suburban and Tahoe |
| GMC | Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL |
The suspect production period identified by GM was March 1, 2021, through May 31, 2024. Model year alone does not determine eligibility; the vehicle identification number (VIN) and the applicable campaign record do.

What the recall remedy requires
GM’s filed remedy is performed by an authorized dealer. The dealer inspects the engine and repairs or replaces it when necessary. If an engine passes inspection, the filing says the dealer provides a higher-viscosity oil, installs a new oil-fill cap, replaces the oil filter and supplies an owner’s-manual insert.
For vehicles that pass inspection and receive the higher-viscosity-oil remedy, GM stated that special coverage lasts 10 years from the original in-service date or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. Owners should verify the current campaign status by VIN with the official recall lookup and an authorized dealer, because coverage and instructions can depend on the individual vehicle record.

What owners should do
- Check the vehicle’s VIN in the current official recall system rather than relying on the model year.
- Contact an authorized GM dealer for campaign eligibility, inspection instructions and repair status.
- If the vehicle develops knocking, oil-pressure warnings, a misfire, sudden loss of power or an engine warning, stop driving when it is safe and request professional diagnosis and towing.
- Keep repair orders and oil-service records, especially if the vehicle has already received recall work or has an engine replacement.
GM’s Part 573 filing warns: “If the engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash.” NHTSA’s June 3, 2025 information request describes complainants’ reported symptom as “a sudden loss of motive power.” Those statements describe the safety consequence and reported experience; they do not identify the cause of the four-mile teardown.
The clearest answer to “What happened?”
In the reported Escalade case, a connecting-rod failure occurred almost immediately after the engine entered service, and teardown commentary proposed an improperly installed wrist pin as a possible contributor. The evidence does not confirm that theory beyond that engine.
Separately, GM’s recall filing attributes broader L87 risk to supplier-related rod-bearing contamination and out-of-specification crankshaft dimensions or surface finish. Because those findings concern a wider population, they should not be used to retroactively label the four-mile engine’s exact failure mode. The practical answer for an owner is VIN-specific verification and dealer inspection, not a diagnosis based solely on the video or on the model year.
