The result depends on what you paid for, which document governs it, whether you are still at the reservation stage, and the law where you bought. A reservation can be only a place in line; a later order or signed purchase agreement may create different obligations. Start by identifying your transaction stage, then obtain a dated, order-specific estimate and compare the cost of waiting with cancelling or choosing an available vehicle.
Start with the transaction you actually have
People often use “reservation,” “deposit,” and “order” interchangeably, but an automaker or dealer may attach different rights to each label. Find the confirmation email, reservation agreement, order summary, dealer worksheet, and any purchase or lease contract. The document—not the marketing page or a verbal promise—usually tells you who holds the money, whether it can be returned, and what happens if you cancel.

Reservation: interest or queue position
A reservation commonly records your interest and may establish an approximate place in a production or allocation queue. It may not identify a vehicle, lock a price, reserve a production slot, or promise a date. Rivian’s U.S. reservation agreement, for example, says the reservation is separate from a final sales agreement and does not lock in price, a firm production slot, a delivery date, or a specific configuration. Its agreement states: “There is no guarantee as to delivery date based on your Reservation.”

The program lists deliveries starting in spring 2027, but that is a program-level target rather than a promise to a particular customer. Configured order or vehicle deposit
After you choose a trim, battery, options, and delivery location, the seller may convert a reservation into an order and request another payment. That payment can have its own deadline, refund method, and consequences for changing configuration. Volkswagen of America’s U.S. ID.4 terms illustrate the distinction: they describe a $100 refundable reservation fee followed by a $400 refundable vehicle deposit after configuration and ordering steps. The terms explain a refund process before purchase and state that crediting is expected within 10 business days after a request.
Signed purchase or lease agreement
A signed vehicle purchase or lease contract is a different stage again. It can specify a vehicle identification number, price adjustments, delivery obligations, cancellation rights, and dealer-held funds. Do not assume that a policy for a pre-order reservation applies after you sign. If the seller has already issued a final contract, read its delivery, default, cancellation, and deposit clauses and check the consumer rules in your country or state.
What a launch delay can—and cannot—change
Your delivery position
A delayed public launch can move the manufacturer’s production schedule, but it does not by itself reveal how your specific place in line will move. Ask whether your reservation remains active, whether allocations are being re-sequenced, and whether a model-year change or configuration change will require a new order. Request the answer in writing and save the date of each update.

Price and configuration
When a reservation does not lock price or specification, the final amount can be set later under the applicable terms. Ask whether the quoted price is for the model year and options you selected, whether incentives expire, and whether a replacement model year will require your acceptance. A lower or higher future price is not, on its own, proof that the seller must honor an earlier number.
Refund eligibility
A missed estimate is not a universal refund trigger. Refundability depends on the wording of the reservation or order terms, the stage of the transaction, the identity of the payment holder, and local law. Some programs allow cancellation at any time; others require cancellation before a vehicle order or purchase contract. A dealer-held deposit can also be governed by a separate dealer document.
Priority and other trade-offs
Cancellation may return your money while permanently giving up your queue position. BMW’s i3 terms expressly connect cancellation with loss of early production priority. If you later re-enter, you may face a different price, model year, or allocation. Treat priority as an economic benefit only if the written terms describe it and you can tolerate the associated wait.

Program examples: read the geography and stage carefully
The following examples show why no single brand policy answers every buyer’s question. They are U.S. or European program terms identified below, not industry-wide rules.

Program figures can change, and the seller, country, and transaction date matter. Use the table to identify questions to ask, not to claim that another automaker or dealer follows the same policy.
How to obtain a current, order-specific delivery estimate
- Open the official order channel. Check the manufacturer account or app, then the dealer’s order system if a dealer is involved. Tesla says its app reflects the latest details after an order is placed, while estimates remain subject to change.
- Record the exact wording. Save a screenshot or PDF showing the estimate, configuration, delivery location, and update date. “Late 2026,” “second quarter,” and a scheduled appointment are different levels of certainty.
- Ask what event the date describes. Clarify whether it means factory production, shipment to a region, arrival at a dealer, or a handover appointment. Ask whether the date is generated for your order or copied from a general launch target.
- Confirm dependencies. Ask whether a battery, software, option, homologation approval, transport allocation, trade-in inspection, financing approval, or charging installation can move the date.
- Request a written update from the seller. Include your reservation or order number and ask whether your payment remains refundable, whether your priority is preserved, and whether the price or model year can change.
- Set a personal decision date. Pick a date by which you will keep, cancel, or switch. Revisit it when a new estimate arrives rather than allowing an open-ended wait.
Compare three practical choices
Make the decision using your own transport needs, not the headline launch date. The same delay can be tolerable for a second car and disruptive for someone whose lease ends next month.

Calculate the cost of waiting
List the transport you would need until handover: rental days, rideshare, public transit, mileage, insurance, parking, and any lease-extension or repair costs. Add the opportunity cost of money tied up in the reservation. Then compare that total with the price difference, lost priority, and setup costs of an available alternative. This is a personal break-even calculation, not a forecast of when production will recover.
Test the confidence of the estimate
Give more weight to a vehicle-specific appointment or confirmed allocation than to a broad “launching this year” statement. Confidence is also higher when the seller can identify a production status, shipping stage, and written change policy. If the answer remains a range with no order-specific explanation, treat the outer date as uncertain.

Refund checklist before you cancel
- Identify the legal seller and payment holder. The money may be held by an automaker, dealer, finance company, or reservation platform.
- Copy the payment label. Note whether the receipt calls it a reservation fee, dealer deposit, vehicle deposit, order payment, or something else.
- Find the refund clause. Check whether it says refundable, the deadline for cancellation, permitted method, and any deductions.
- Check the transaction stage. Determine whether you have only reserved, configured and ordered, or signed a purchase or lease agreement.
- Ask about queue loss. Confirm whether cancelling removes priority and whether rebooking would require a new payment.
- Submit a traceable request. Use the stated portal or email, include the order number and payment details, and keep confirmation of receipt.
- Track the expected date. For example, the cited Rivian terms estimate approximately 5–10 business days, Volkswagen’s ID.4 terms state expected crediting within 10 business days, and VinFast Europe’s terms refer to refund distribution becoming available within 30 days after notice. Those periods apply only to those programs and their stated conditions.
If the seller will not return the money
First ask for the refusal and the contract clause supporting it in writing. Check whether the payment was made to a dealer rather than the manufacturer and address the request to the named holder. If the seller says you have progressed to a purchase or lease contract, review that document’s cancellation and default provisions instead of relying on the original reservation page.

Keep the reservation agreement, receipts, screenshots, emails, call notes, and refund request. If the response conflicts with the signed terms, contact the consumer-protection agency, motor-vehicle regulator, or ombuds service serving the transaction’s jurisdiction. A lawyer or local consumer adviser can assess a disputed deposit under the applicable law; there is no single cross-market rule that a delayed estimate automatically creates a refund right.
Plan for the vehicle you may eventually receive
If you keep waiting, verify that the selected configuration still meets your needs and that your home or workplace can support charging. A home Level 2 installation may require an electrical assessment, permits, a suitable circuit, and compatibility checks with the vehicle. Do not buy equipment merely because a launch date moved; wait until the vehicle specification and installation requirements are sufficiently settled. Tesla’s delivery guidance points customers toward home-charging planning and accessories, but charging preparation cannot make an uncertain delivery date certain.
Before accepting delivery, ask for the final price, model year, options, warranty start point, delivery location, and any balance due. Compare those final terms with your original order so that a changed specification or price is identified before handover.
A concise decision sequence
- Locate every document and identify whether you have a reservation, order, or signed contract.
- Confirm who holds the payment and whether the exact amount is refundable.
- Capture the latest order-specific estimate and ask what milestone it represents.
- Price your temporary transportation through the new estimate’s outer date.
- Ask in writing about price, model year, configuration, priority, and cancellation effects.
- Choose a keep, cancel, or switch path by your personal decision date.
- If cancelling, follow the specified process and monitor the refund against the program’s stated timeframe.
The key distinction is between a manufacturer’s changing forecast and a contractual commitment. Your reservation paperwork, later order documents, and local consumer rules determine what you can recover and what you give up by leaving the queue. Use the dated evidence in your account and the exact terms attached to your payment to make the decision that fits your transportation needs.
