The oft-quoted $35,000 Boho Camper Van was a 2018 conversion package price, not a current, drive-away price. It paired a used one-ton commercial van with a deliberately simple interior: a full-size bed, 25-gallon water system, portable cooking and cooling gear, and dual batteries with 200 watts of solar. Boho’s current conversions start at $39,000, while the company says most clients invest $60,000–$80,000 before vehicle choices are fully accounted for.
The $35,000 Boho van was a 2018 package
New Atlas reported the approximately $35,000 package on December 20, 2018. Boho kept the price down by starting with used one-ton commercial vans, including Ford E-350 and Dodge Ram Van 3500 examples, rather than expensive new Mercedes Sprinter or Ford Transit chassis. The result was a compact camper with a lodge-like finish instead of a luxury motorhome specification.

The interior used pine or cedar wall paneling and vinyl flooring. Boho estimated roughly one month for a build at the time, but that was a 2018 estimate and should not be treated as a current production promise.
What the historical package included
Sleeping and storage
A two-person, full-size bed occupied the rear of the van, with storage space beneath it. That is a practical arrangement for a couple, but it does not provide a second permanent sleeping area for children or guests.

Water and washing
The conversion included a 25-gallon (95-liter) water tank. An electric-pump sink used the tank, and the same supply fed an outdoor shower. There was no indication of a built-in bathroom or indoor shower, so privacy and weather protection depend on how the owner uses the outdoor setup.
Cooking and refrigeration
A bamboo counter incorporated the sink, while a rear slide-out bamboo shelf created an outdoor cooking surface. Boho supplied a portable propane camping stove and a cooler instead of a fixed range and compressor refrigerator. That choice reduced cabinetry, installation work and electrical demand, but it also means cooking and food storage remain portable rather than fully integrated.

New Atlas described the dual-battery, 200-watt solar system as a notable standard feature. Actual runtime depends on battery type, capacity, weather, driving and the devices connected; the historical description does not state battery amp-hour capacity or inverter wattage.
Ready-to-use provisions
Linens, cookware and other basic provisions were included in the reported package, so the buyer did not have to furnish the van from scratch on the first trip.
Why the design could stay relatively inexpensive
- Used commercial donor: A used one-ton van cost less than a new, high-roof European or full-size modern cargo van.
- Portable appliances: A camping stove and cooler avoided the cost and space required for built-in appliances.
- Simple utilities: One water tank, a sink, an outdoor shower and a modest solar-and-battery system covered basic off-grid use without a complex plumbing or climate-control installation.
- Decorative impact: Wood paneling, bamboo surfaces and coordinated flooring made the small cabin feel finished without the systems burden of a luxury coach.
This formula is best understood as an attractive, usable conversion on a mechanically serviceable used van—not as a fully equipped modern motorhome.

Is $35,000 still Boho’s price?
No. Boho’s current website says conversions start at $39,000 and that most clients invest $60,000–$80,000. Its FAQ gives a broader typical conversion range of $39,000–$90,000. Those figures describe the conversion and specification; the vehicle can add roughly $35,000–$90,000, depending on chassis and condition.

Boho now lists Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit and Ram ProMaster builds, in addition to offering rentals and completed vans. Most builds take about five to six weeks once the van enters production, according to the current site.
Can you still use a used Ford E-350?
Yes, a used Ford E-350 is consistent with the cost-saving approach described in the 2018 report, but the original donor examples do not establish what Boho accepts today. Chassis condition, rust, service history, payload, insulation needs and parts availability all affect whether a particular van is a sensible build candidate.

Boho’s current used-van service says it can source donors for new builds and advertises potential savings of $20,000–$30,000. The company says typical sourced vans are two to three years old with approximately 30,000–50,000 miles and include a one-year drivetrain warranty. Availability is market-dependent, so confirm the exact year, mileage, inspection standard, warranty coverage and price in writing.

Before ordering, ask for the battery chemistry and capacity, inverter rating, solar-controller type, shore-power provision, insulation, ventilation, heating and cooling equipment, plumbing winterization and payload impact. Those details determine how comfortably the van works away from hookups, and they were not fully specified in the 2018 package description.

How the Boho concept compares with current $35,000 conversion claims
A headline price can describe the conversion only. Two current examples illustrate the distinction:

Then compare water capacity, sleeping capacity, appliance integration, solar and battery capacity, insulation, heating and cooling, lead time and service support.
Check the real price before committing
- Ask Boho for a written quote that separates the van, conversion, options, taxes and delivery.
- Confirm the donor’s year, mileage, title status, inspection results, rust condition and drivetrain warranty.
- Request the electrical specification: battery type and amp-hours, inverter wattage, solar-controller details and outlet limits.
- Verify water-tank capacity, shower arrangement, winterization procedure and whether a heater, refrigerator or ventilation fan is included.
- Get the production lead time measured from your specific van’s arrival in production, rather than relying on the 2018 one-month estimate.
- Consider renting a Boho van first; the company continues to promote rentals, which lets you test the bed, storage, cooking arrangement and off-grid capacity before ordering.
The Bottom Line
The $35,000 Boho woody van was a clever 2018 value proposition built around a used commercial chassis and portable, low-complexity equipment. It remains a useful blueprint for an affordable camper, but current Boho conversions start at $39,000 and a complete van commonly costs far more once the chassis and options are included.
