It is a compelling reminder to follow the maintenance schedule for your own truck, but it does not prove that missed oil changes caused this engine’s melted piston. The reported failure mechanism was severe detonation, and the trigger was not identified.
What the teardown found
Autoblog reported on September 29, 2026, that the I Do Cars YouTube channel documented a teardown of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 from a 2022 F-150 Lariat. The truck had reportedly covered 180,000 miles in four years of commercial fleet use, including rough-road work. Those are details of one vehicle, not a representative sample of F-150s.
The teardown account described several kinds of damage: brittle plastic timing-chain guides, metallic debris around the variable camshaft timing solenoids, scored camshaft journals, and a piston melted through its rings. Aluminum debris in the oil pan was also associated with secondary scoring on the rod bearings. The timing-chain system was reported to remain functional.
Autoblog interpreted dirty oil and restricted lubrication as possible contributors to wear. That interpretation is not the same as a confirmed forensic finding that establishes why each component failed.

Did skipped oil changes cause the melted piston?
The available account does not establish that. Autoblog attributed the melted piston to severe detonation, an abnormal combustion event, and listed a faulty fuel injector, an aggressive aftermarket tune, and excessive oil consumption as possible triggers. It did not identify which, if any, occurred in this truck. A separate analysis likewise cautioned that a single teardown cannot resolve the specific trigger.
The vehicle’s Carfax history reportedly showed substantial gaps between recorded oil changes. A gap means that no service entry appeared in that report; it does not prove that no oil change took place. The available account also acknowledges that unreported service may be missing from the record.

- Up to 10,000 miles - premium engine protection; 96.5% Dirt Removal Power
- Multi-fiber, high-density media
- Silicone anti-drainback valve prevents dry starts
- Bypass valve allow for optimum oil flow
- Rugged internal construction; wear-resistant metal end caps and center tube
It is reasonable to treat infrequent or neglected oil service as a risk to engine lubrication and wear. It is not reasonable to turn this case into proof that skipped changes alone melted the piston, or that this failure is common across EcoBoost engines.
Why detonation can damage an engine quickly
Detonation is abnormal combustion that can increase forces, noise, vibration, and temperature inside an engine. In an April 2019 educational presentation, the FAA Safety Team warned that “severe detonation can cause engine failure in minutes.” It also compared the force to “hitting the piston with a sledge hammer.”

The FAA material discusses aviation engines, not Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost, so it explains the general mechanism rather than diagnosing this truck. It notes that turbocharged engines are particularly heat-sensitive and identifies oil entering the combustion chamber as one possible contributor to detonation. That possibility does not establish that oil consumption caused the F-150 failure.
What F-150 owners should take from the case
- Follow the schedule for your exact truck. Use the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual for your model year and operating conditions; this teardown is not a basis for a universal oil grade or interval.
- Keep service records. Record mileage and dates, and retain receipts. A maintenance log can make your own history clearer, though recordkeeping itself does not prevent mechanical wear.
- Investigate signs of trouble. If the engine runs poorly, makes unusual noise, or shows a warning, have the cause diagnosed rather than assuming an oil change alone will address it.
- Read vehicle-history reports cautiously. Missing entries are incomplete evidence, not proof that service was skipped.
One teardown is not a failure rate
Ford said F-Series trucks sold 828,832 units in 2025 and that the line was America’s best-selling truck for a 49th consecutive year. That figure provides market context only; it says nothing about the reliability of this engine or the frequency of this failure. The sources cited here do not establish a failure-rate statistic for a melted piston of this kind.
