A 100 MW rating tells you the battery’s maximum discharge power, not how much energy it stores or how long it can run. To estimate duration, you also need the energy rating in megawatt-hours (MWh): divide MWh by MW. A 100 MW/100 MWh system has a nominal one-hour duration at 100 MW, while a 100 MW/400 MWh system has a nominal four-hour duration. Those are nameplate calculations, not guarantees of usable energy in every operating condition.
What does a 100 MW battery tell you about its energy storage capacity?
It tells you the system is rated to discharge electricity at up to 100 megawatts (MW) under its stated operating conditions. It does not tell you whether the battery stores 50 MWh, 100 MWh, 400 MWh or another amount. The missing figure is energy capacity, measured in megawatt-hours (MWh).

The distinction is the same as the difference between a vehicle’s engine power and the amount of fuel in its tank. Power describes the rate at which work can be done; energy describes the quantity available to do that work. A 100 MW battery could be designed for a short, high-power burst or for several hours of output, depending on its MWh rating and operating limits.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) defines power capacity as the greatest amount of energy a battery can discharge at a given moment and energy capacity as the total amount of energy stored. EIA calculates duration by dividing energy capacity by power capacity.

Therefore, the phrase “100 MW battery” is incomplete when the question is storage capacity. It identifies the power side of the specification only.
MW and MWh measure different things
MW is the discharge rate
One megawatt equals one million watts. A 100 MW rating indicates the maximum rate at which the battery can export electricity when the system, inverter and grid connection permit that output. It is a rate, not a quantity accumulated over time.
MWh is the stored or delivered energy quantity
One megawatt-hour is the amount of energy delivered by a one-megawatt output sustained for one hour. If a battery actually delivered 100 MW continuously for one hour, it would supply 100 MWh, subject to losses and operating constraints. Saying that a 100 MW battery “produces 100 MWh every hour” is wrong unless the system can sustain that output and has enough available energy.

A nameplate value may not equal the energy available to the grid after reserve requirements, conversion losses, temperature limits, state-of-charge limits or other controls. A specification should identify whether its MWh figure is nameplate, usable, or otherwise limited; if it does not, treat the distinction as unresolved rather than assuming the full number can be delivered.

How to calculate how long a 100 MW battery can run
Use this dimensional calculation:
Nominal duration (hours) = energy capacity (MWh) ÷ discharge power (MW)
The megawatt units cancel, leaving hours. The result assumes the battery can sustain the stated power and that the quoted MWh is available for discharge.

A battery can also run longer at a lower discharge rate in ideal arithmetic. For example, 200 MWh divided by a 50 MW output equals four hours. That does not mean every battery can freely choose any output from zero to its maximum; the allowed range is set by the equipment and its operating controls.
Why the calculated duration is only nominal
The division gives a nameplate or arithmetic duration. Actual delivered energy can be lower, and the rated output may not be available for the entire calculated period.

- Usable versus nameplate energy: The published MWh may describe the installed cells rather than the energy the operator permits the grid to use. Reserve margins and state-of-charge limits can reduce dispatchable energy.
- Conversion losses: Batteries store direct-current energy, while most grids use alternating current. Power-conversion equipment consumes energy, so energy measured at the cells is not identical to energy delivered at the point of interconnection.
- Operating state: A battery that is partly charged, held in reserve, or following a dispatch instruction cannot necessarily deliver its full nameplate output.
- Thermal and equipment constraints: Inverters, transformers and battery-management systems can impose limits that vary with temperature, maintenance status or other conditions.
- Degradation: Capacity and maximum power can change as the system ages. A duration calculated from an initial rating should not automatically be read as a lifetime guarantee.
- Grid and contractual limits: The interconnection, export limit or market schedule may restrict output below the battery’s internal rating.
Unless a project document explicitly states otherwise, describe the result as “nominal duration at rated output,” not as a promise of delivered electricity.
Two 100 MW projects can have very different durations
Real project records show why MW alone is insufficient. The California Energy Commission (CEC) lists the proposed Arges battery at the Vaca Dixon Power Center in Vacaville, California, at 100 MW and 400 MWh. That implies a four-hour nominal duration at 100 MW. The CEC record identifies the overall project as under review, so it should be described as a proposal rather than an operating plant.
National Grid reported that the Richborough Energy Park battery in Kent, United Kingdom, was connected and energized in December 2023 at 100 MW/100 MWh. Its implied nominal duration at the stated output is one hour. National Grid described the project as supporting grid stability and balancing the system.

These projects share a 100 MW power rating but differ by a factor of four in published energy capacity. They also differ in jurisdiction, project status and described purpose. The comparison does not establish either project’s present-day operating performance beyond those records.

How the intended application changes the useful duration
Battery duration is selected around the service the owner plans to provide, not around a universal “correct” number for 100 MW systems.
Fast grid services
EIA reports that batteries with durations under two hours are commonly used for grid services. These services can require rapid response to changes in frequency, voltage or system balance. A short-duration battery may be valuable because it can respond quickly even though it cannot sustain its maximum output through a long peak-demand period.
Load shifting
EIA reports that four-to-eight-hour batteries are typically cycled once per day to move electricity from lower-demand periods to higher-demand periods. A longer duration allows more energy to be shifted across the day, but it also represents a different design and dispatch strategy from a short burst of grid support.
Multiple services
Many systems perform more than one role. EIA reported that, in 2020, more than 40% of U.S. battery energy capacity could perform both grid services and load shifting, about 40% was categorized as load-shifting-only, and about 20% as grid-services-only. Those percentages describe the 2020 categories and should not be presented as current figures for 2026 or as a rule for every project.

Neither the application nor the duration can be inferred from 100 MW alone. The MWh rating, permitted operating range, dispatch strategy and grid connection all matter.
A battery project is more than its MW and MWh labels
Utility-scale storage is an interconnected facility, not just a container of cells. The project normally includes battery modules, power-conversion equipment, transformers, protection systems, control software, a substation and a grid interconnection. Those elements determine how the internal battery rating becomes electricity delivered to the network.
A 100 MW cell-and-inverter rating therefore does not necessarily equal 100 MW available at the transmission or distribution point. The relevant document may state an export limit, an interconnection capacity, or a power rating measured on the battery side rather than at the grid connection. When comparing projects, identify where the MW and MWh values are measured.
How to read a 100 MW battery specification
- Find the energy rating. Look for MWh, not only MW. Without MWh, duration cannot be calculated.
- Confirm the measurement basis. Check whether the figure is nameplate, usable, gross, net, or measured at the battery, inverter or point of interconnection.
- Calculate the arithmetic duration. Divide the stated MWh by the stated MW and label the result nominal.
- Check the operating conditions. Look for temperature, state-of-charge, reserve, ramp-rate and charging or discharging limits.
- Identify the project status. A planning or permitting record is not evidence that a plant is operating. An announcement of connection is a dated statement, not a guarantee of current performance.
- Read the intended service. Grid balancing, reserve services and load shifting imply different dispatch patterns and may use different portions of the battery’s energy.
- Locate the grid boundary. Determine whether the rating applies to cells, inverters or exported power after conversion equipment and interconnection limits.
Common mistakes about a 100 MW rating
- Calling 100 MW the storage capacity: It is the power capacity. Storage quantity is expressed in MWh.
- Assuming every 100 MW battery lasts one hour: That is true only for a 100 MW/100 MWh configuration under the calculation’s assumptions.
- Inferring 400 MWh from 100 MW: A four-hour design is one possibility, not a consequence of the power rating.
- Treating nominal MWh as guaranteed delivery: Nameplate energy may exceed usable energy, and losses or controls can reduce export.
- Comparing projects without dates or jurisdictions: A California proposal and a connected United Kingdom project are not equivalent records.
- Reporting historical national totals as current: EIA’s cited figures cover specific years and should retain those dates.
What national figures reveal—and what they do not
EIA reported that operational U.S. utility-scale battery systems at the end of 2022 represented 8,842 MW of nameplate power capacity and 11,105 MWh of energy capacity. It also reported 4,807 MW of utility-scale battery power capacity installed during 2022. These figures show the scale of the national fleet at those dates; they do not provide a duration for an unnamed 100 MW project, and they are not 2026 totals.
Dividing the national totals would produce an aggregate arithmetic ratio, but that ratio would mix projects with different designs, statuses and operating purposes. It should not be used as a substitute for the MWh rating of a particular installation.
The practical answer to “How long can a 100 MW battery run?”
The honest answer is: there is no single duration. A 100 MW/100 MWh system is nominally one hour at 100 MW; a 100 MW/200 MWh system is nominally two hours; and a 100 MW/400 MWh system is nominally four hours. If the energy rating is not published, the runtime cannot be determined from 100 MW alone.
For a defensible comparison, report both ratings, show the division, state whether the project is proposed or operating, identify the jurisdiction and date, and explain whether the energy figure is usable or merely nameplate. That preserves what the specification actually proves without turning a power rating into an unsupported claim about stored energy.
