Hyundai’s 90% localisation goal could make future electric vehicles in India less exposed to imported components and logistics costs, but it does not guarantee a 10% lower price or cheaper servicing. Hyundai Motor India described localisation at 82% across its EV and internal-combustion manufacturing operations on June 4, 2026, with a plan to reach 90% over the next five to six years. Hyundai Motor Company’s 2026 investor-day material separately described a goal of sourcing 90% of vehicle content from India by 2030.
Those are company targets, not a model-specific promise. Hyundai has not published a future Indian EV’s local-content calculation, retail price, service schedule, repair tariff or battery-replacement cost. The practical effect for buyers will depend on which components are local, how much of the battery is made in India, the vehicle’s specification, production scale and Hyundai’s pricing decisions.

What does 90% localisation mean for Hyundai cars in India?
Localisation is a measurement of how much of a vehicle’s content or manufacturing value is sourced or produced within India. It does not necessarily mean that 90% of every physical part, raw material or subcomponent originates in India. The denominator and accounting method matter, and Hyundai’s public statements do not provide one common definition for all of the percentages it has announced.

In its June 4, 2026 announcement, Hyundai Motor India Limited said localisation across its EV and ICE manufacturing operations was 82% and that it planned to increase the level to 90% over the next five to six years. The wording describes a forward-looking manufacturing target. It is not an assertion that a particular EV sold today is already 90% localised.

The 2030 vehicle-content goal
Hyundai Motor Company’s 2026 CEO Investor Day account used different wording: an aim to source 90% of vehicle content from India by 2030. That is a group-level vehicle-content goal, while the Hyundai Motor India release refers to localisation across operations. Both should be attributed to the entity and publication that made the statement rather than treated as interchangeable measurements.
Why the 2025 92% figure cannot be used as a trend
A January 21, 2025 Hyundai Motor India release reported “up to 92% localization in manufacturing”. It also said the company’s localisation team engaged 194+ vendors supplying more than 1,238 parts. The later 82% figure has a different date and context, and the available announcements do not define a shared denominator. Therefore, the published figures do not establish that localisation fell from 92% to 82%; they are separate company-reported measurements.

How can localisation change the price of an electric Hyundai?
Hyundai’s prospectus identifies cells, battery packs, power electronics and drivetrains as the key areas it intends to localise “to maximise price competitiveness” of its EV models. These components are central to an EV’s cost, so producing or sourcing more of them in India could reduce exposure to imported inputs, overseas freight, currency movements and long supply chains. That is the cost mechanism Hyundai has described; it is not a disclosed rupee saving for a named vehicle.

What the reported forex savings do—and do not—show
Hyundai Motor India said in January 2025 that its localisation efforts had generated more than US$672 million (INR 5,678 crore) in foreign-exchange savings since 2019. This is an aggregate, company-reported figure across the relevant operations and period. It is not a saving assigned to one EV, and it does not prove that the same amount has been removed from vehicle sticker prices. Savings can also be absorbed by investment, supplier pricing, quality controls, inventory, warranty provisions or other business costs.
Will Hyundai’s future EVs be cheaper if 90% of the car is localised?
Not automatically. Local content can improve Hyundai’s cost position, but the showroom price is set after many other variables are considered. The company has not published a formula linking its localisation percentage to a specific discount.
- Vehicle specification: A larger battery, more powerful motor, advanced driver-assistance hardware, premium interior or extra safety equipment can raise the price even when sourcing is highly local.
- Production scale: A new EV built in modest volumes may have higher per-unit tooling, validation and factory costs than a mature, high-volume model.
- Supplier economics: Indian suppliers still price materials, energy, labour, capital and technology. Local sourcing does not make those inputs free.
- Taxes and policy: Central and state taxes, registration charges and any future incentive programme affect the on-road price independently of local content.
- Exchange rates and commodities: Local assembly can still depend on imported minerals, semiconductor wafers, machinery or other inputs whose prices move internationally.
- Hyundai’s market strategy: The company may use a lower cost base to reduce the retail price, add equipment, improve margins or respond to competitors. Only the published price will show which choice it made.
When Hyundai announces a specific Indian EV, compare its ex-showroom price and equipment with a predecessor or rival only after confirming the battery capacity, motor output, warranty and local-content definition. A percentage without those details cannot predict the amount a buyer will pay.

Will Hyundai use locally made batteries in future Indian EVs?
Hyundai Motor Group has announced a strategic partnership with Exide Energy Solutions to support locally produced batteries for future Hyundai and Kia EVs in India. The announcement makes battery localisation a credible part of the company’s direction, but it does not identify a particular Hyundai model, cell chemistry, production start date, battery capacity or retail-price effect.

A vehicle may have an India-assembled pack while some cells or active materials remain imported. Buyers should therefore look for the exact bill of materials or local-content description in the model’s official documentation instead of interpreting “local battery” as an all-India supply chain.
Does local manufacturing make EV maintenance cheaper?
There is currently no cited evidence that Hyundai’s 90% target will lower routine service bills, replacement-part prices, high-voltage repair charges or traction-battery replacement costs. More Indian suppliers and local pack assembly could eventually improve parts availability or reduce waiting for imported components, but that is a possibility rather than an announced consumer outcome.

Routine scheduled maintenance
EVs generally avoid engine-oil changes and have fewer moving powertrain parts than combustion cars, but the service bill still depends on the model’s inspection schedule, consumables, software procedures, labour rates and warranty policy. Hyundai has not published a future localised EV service schedule or a comparison showing that localisation changes those charges.
High-voltage system work
Inverter, motor, charger and battery-management faults require trained technicians, insulated equipment and safety procedures. Local production of a component does not by itself establish a lower diagnostic or repair price. The relevant evidence will be the model’s parts catalogue, warranty terms, authorised-repair capability and published labour rates.
Collision repairs
Body panels, structural parts, sensors, lamps and battery enclosures are priced and repaired through a separate collision-repair process. A locally sourced drivetrain does not guarantee cheaper accident repairs, especially when a damaged pack, thermal system or sensor array must be assessed.

Traction-battery replacement
A complete battery replacement is a rare, high-value event compared with routine servicing, and its cost varies with capacity, chemistry, pack design and warranty coverage. No future Hyundai India EV battery-replacement price or revised warranty has been announced in the cited material. Buyers should obtain those terms for the exact model before purchase.

What does the localisation target mean for charging and day-to-day ownership?
Local manufacturing and charging access solve different ownership problems. Hyundai Motor India’s prospectus reported 13 fast-charging stations in India as of June 30, 2024 and described further network plans. That dated count should not be presented as the current 2026 network size or as proof of nationwide coverage.
For a future EV, check the charging arrangements in the city and routes where you actually drive: compatible connector, charging speed, payment method, site uptime, operating hours and backup options. A locally made battery cannot compensate for inadequate access to reliable charging, and the localisation percentage does not state how much public charging a buyer will have.
How to evaluate a future Hyundai EV when its specifications are released
Use the following sequence rather than treating the headline percentage as a purchase decision:
- Confirm the definition: Read whether Hyundai reports local content by vehicle value, parts count, manufacturing operations or another denominator.
- Identify the localised components: Check whether the announcement covers cells, the pack, power electronics, motor and drivetrain, or only final assembly and selected parts.
- Check battery details: Record capacity, chemistry, warranty duration and whether cells and pack are made in India or only assembled there.
- Calculate the real price: Compare ex-showroom and on-road prices, including state registration and insurance, rather than assuming a localisation discount.
- Read the warranty exclusions: Look for battery state-of-health coverage, high-voltage component limits, labour coverage and conditions for repair or replacement.
- Request the service schedule: Ask for inspection intervals, consumables, software-update policy and published labour or package prices.
- Check repair support: Confirm which authorised workshops can handle high-voltage work, the expected parts channels and the escalation process for a damaged battery.
- Test the charging plan: Verify home-charging requirements and public chargers on regular journeys before placing an order.
Questions to ask a dealer before booking
- What exactly is included in the stated localisation percentage, and is it calculated by value or by parts?
- Are the cells, modules and pack produced in India, or is only pack assembly local?
- What is the battery warranty’s time, distance and state-of-health threshold?
- What are the scheduled-service intervals and current package prices for this exact variant?
- Which nearby workshops are equipped for high-voltage diagnostics and battery repairs?
- How are collision-damaged battery packs inspected, transported and priced?
- Which public-charging locations are officially supported in my state and on my regular routes?
What buyers can conclude today
Hyundai’s 90% localisation plan is best understood as an industrial strategy that may improve cost control and supply resilience, especially if cells, packs, power electronics and drivetrains move into Indian production. It is not a guaranteed consumer discount, a promise of lower maintenance bills or proof that every future EV will contain 90% Indian-made physical parts.
The useful buying evidence will arrive with each model: a defined local-content calculation, battery sourcing, price list, warranty, service schedule, repair network and charging support. Until those documents are published, treat the 90% figure as a direction of travel and judge affordability and ownership cost from the vehicle-specific numbers.
