Toyota chose the name because its San Antonio truck plant occupies land connected to a ranch established in 1794.
On the Tundra, the 1794 Edition is the luxury-focused grade, with a Western-inspired cabin, saddle-colored leather, wood-look or American walnut trim, chrome exterior details, and upscale equipment. It first appeared for the 2014 model year and remains a regular Tundra grade, including on the 2026 truck.

What does “1794” mean on the Tundra?
“1794” refers to the year a historic Texas ranch was established on the land now used by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio. Toyota’s truck factory sits on part of that former ranch property, so the number connects the Tundra to the region where it is assembled.

The property has also been identified in local historical material as the former JLC Ranch. It is more accurate to describe the name as a reference to “the ranch founded in 1794” than to call it an official “1794 Ranch.” The original land grant is associated with Canary Islander Don Juan Ignacio Pérez de Casanova.

Toyota purchased the San Antonio site in 2003, began construction that year, and started plant operations in 2006. The Tundra’s 1794 name therefore links the truck’s Texas manufacturing location with the area’s Spanish-era ranching history.
Is 1794 a Tundra trim level?
Yes. The 1794 Edition is a Tundra grade, and Toyota introduced it for the 2014 model year. It occupies the premium, comfort-oriented side of the lineup. In broad terms, it is closer to a Platinum than to an off-road-focused TRD Pro.
The number is not a technical designation. It does not tell you anything specific about the truck’s:
- Engine displacement
- Horsepower or torque
- Model year
- Number of trucks produced
- Four-wheel-drive system
- Bed length or cab configuration
Those details depend on the particular model year and configuration. A Tundra wearing a 1794 badge is a luxury-grade truck with a Texas-themed identity, not a truck with a 1,794-cubic-centimeter engine or a 1,794-unit production run.
What makes the 1794 Edition different?
The 1794 Edition traditionally emphasizes materials and comfort rather than maximum trail capability. Its styling uses a Western and ranch-inspired theme, while its equipment generally places it near the top of the standard Tundra range.
| 1794 Edition feature | What it represents |
|---|---|
| Saddle-colored leather | The grade’s signature upscale, Western-influenced interior look |
| Wood-look or American walnut trim | A more traditional luxury-truck cabin treatment |
| Special 1794 badging | Identifies the premium grade and its Texas heritage connection |
| Chrome exterior accents | A polished appearance rather than an overtly rugged one |
| Larger alloy wheels | Visual distinction and additional standard equipment, depending on year |
Equipment changes between generations and model years, so a used 2014, 2017, 2022, and 2026 Tundra 1794 will not necessarily have the same infotainment system, safety features, suspension, wheels, or powertrain. Check the original window sticker or Toyota’s specifications for the exact truck.

What does the 1794 Edition have in 2026?
For 2026, Toyota lists both the 1794 Edition and the 1794 Edition i-FORCE MAX. The grade continues to use a luxury-oriented formula, including:

- American walnut wood-grain trim
- 20-inch machined-finish wheels
- Chrome-finished exterior accents
The i-FORCE MAX version adds Toyota’s hybrid powertrain. The presence of “i-FORCE MAX” identifies the powertrain, while “1794 Edition” identifies the trim and design package. They are separate parts of the truck’s name.
How is the regular 1794 Edition different from the 1794 Limited Edition?
Toyota has used similar wording for two different products:
- 1794 Edition: A regular Tundra grade available across the lineup and carried into the 2026 model year.
- 1794 Limited Edition: A separate, limited-production version announced for the 2024 Tundra.
The 2024 1794 Limited Edition was based on the 1794 grade but added more specialized hardware and interior treatment. Toyota planned a production run of just 1,500 trucks. It used the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, four-wheel drive, a CrewMax cab, and a 5.5-foot bed.
It also received FOX shocks, a 1.1-inch lift, and a distinctive leather interior developed with Saddleback Leather Company. Those features belong to the 2024 limited-production model and should not automatically be assumed on every Tundra 1794.
Common misconceptions about the 1794 badge
It does not mean the truck was made in 1794
The Tundra is a modern pickup assembled at Toyota’s San Antonio plant. The year is historical branding tied to the land’s ranching history.

It does not mean every 1794 Tundra is limited edition
The standard 1794 Edition is a recurring trim. Only specially identified models, such as the 2024 1794 Limited Edition, have a restricted production run.
It does not identify the engine
A 1794 Tundra can be offered with different powertrain choices depending on the model year. The badge itself does not specify the engine or drivetrain.
It does not prove the leather came from the historic ranch
Toyota’s historical explanation covers the ranch connection and the styling theme. It does not establish that the production leather came from cattle raised on that land. The 2024 1794 Limited Edition’s leather collaboration was specifically with Saddleback Leather Company.

Why did Toyota choose a historical name?
The name gives Toyota a way to distinguish its most traditionally styled luxury Tundra from grades built around technology, performance, or off-road use. It also reinforces the truck’s connection to San Antonio, where Tundras have been assembled by Toyota workers since the plant began operations.
That makes the 1794 badge both a trim identifier and a regional design statement. The saddle leather, walnut-style trim, chrome, and Western cues are intended to make the truck feel different from a purely urban luxury pickup or an aggressive trail truck.

When shopping for a used Tundra with the badge, verify the actual grade rather than relying only on appearance. A seller may describe a truck as a “1794 special edition” even when it is a standard 1794 Edition, or aftermarket leather and wheels may make another trim resemble one.

What does 1794 stand for on a Toyota Tundra?
It refers to the year 1794, when a historic ranch was established on land now occupied in part by Toyota’s San Antonio truck plant. It is a heritage name for the Tundra’s luxury-oriented grade.
Is the Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition a limited-edition truck?
The regular 1794 Edition is a standard recurring Tundra grade, not a limited-production model. Toyota also offered a separate 2024 Tundra 1794 Limited Edition, restricted to 1,500 units.
Is the 1794 Tundra better than a TRD Pro?
They target different buyers. The 1794 Edition prioritizes luxury, leather, wood-style trim, and chrome, while the TRD Pro is designed for off-road performance. “Better” depends on how the truck will be used.
Does every Tundra 1794 have the same engine and equipment?
No. Powertrains, technology, suspension, wheels, and available configurations vary by model year. The 1794 badge identifies the trim, not a single engine or fixed specification.

Bottom line: The Toyota Tundra’s 1794 badge honors the Texas ranch established in 1794 on land connected to Toyota’s San Antonio plant. It identifies a premium, Western-styled Tundra grade—not an engine size, model year, production count, or automatic limited edition. The regular grade remains available, while the 2024 1794 Limited Edition was a separate 1,500-unit model with additional off-road and interior upgrades.
