120 Nm is a maximum torque setting, not a constant force at the rear wheel, a speed rating, or a promise that every climb becomes effortless. On a compatible Bosch Performance Line CX or CX-R drive unit, Bosch’s performance upgrade 2.0 raises the available ceiling from 85 Nm to as much as 120 Nm. The motor still responds to your pedaling, the assistance is delivered selectively, and the bicycle manufacturer can set a lower limit for its model.
On the trail, that ceiling can provide a brief, strong push when a steep ramp, step, root or tight turn demands it. It does not mean the motor continuously produces 120 Nm, and it does not by itself tell you the bike’s speed, range, traction or climbing time.

What the 120 Nm figure actually measures
Newton-metres (Nm) measure torque: rotational turning force. In an e-MTB, the drive unit applies torque through the crank and drivetrain while you pedal. The torque that ultimately reaches the tire also depends on the selected gear, wheel size, traction and the rider’s own input. Therefore, a specification of 120 Nm is best read as the drive unit’s highest permitted assistance setting under the system’s operating conditions, not as a fixed amount of force available at the contact patch every second.
Bosch’s relevant figure applies to specific smart-system Performance Line CX and CX-R hardware. It was introduced with performance upgrade 2.0, released as a free over-the-air update on May 4, 2026. Bosch describes a base setting of 85 Nm and an adjustable maximum of up to 120 Nm for eligible drive units. The bicycle maker determines how high that limit can be on a particular model.

It is a ceiling, not continuous output
The motor does not hold 120 Nm from the first pedal stroke until the battery is empty. Bosch describes the higher support as a short-term response to technically demanding situations and says the system returns to a more efficient level afterward. The assistance also depends on dynamic rider power: you must contribute meaningful pedal input for the system to provide its strongest response.
It is not a speed, power or legal-class rating
Torque, mechanical power, support percentage and assisted speed describe different things. A torque number cannot be converted into a guaranteed top speed or a climbing time without knowing cadence, gearing, system limits, rider mass, gradient, surface and other variables. It also does not establish the legal e-bike class in your jurisdiction.
Which Bosch motors can receive 120 Nm?
Bosch’s feature table distinguishes the BDU38 Performance Line CX and CX-R drive units from earlier variants. The table lists the 120 Nm entry for BDU38 CX/CX-R units; BDU37 CX variants do not receive that 120 Nm entry. “Performance Line CX” on a frame decal is not enough to identify the hardware generation, so check the drive-unit designation in the bicycle documentation or the eBike Flow app.
| Drive-unit identification | What Bosch’s upgrade information establishes | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| BDU38 Performance Line CX | Eligible for the performance upgrade’s up-to-120-Nm setting | The bike maker’s maximum torque limit and whether the update has been installed |
| BDU38 Performance Line CX-R | Eligible for the up-to-120-Nm entry in Bosch’s table | The manufacturer cap and the exact regional configuration |
| BDU37 Performance Line CX variants | No 120 Nm entry in Bosch’s cited feature table | The exact motor and software version; do not assume compatibility from the CX name alone |
The update’s availability on a bike is therefore the intersection of three conditions: the correct BDU38 hardware, compatible software, and a manufacturer setting that exposes the desired maximum. If any one is missing, the bike may remain below 120 Nm.

What 120 Nm can feel like on technical trails
Steep ramps and ledges
On a short, steep ramp, extra available torque can help the drive unit maintain forward motion as the gradient rises. This is most useful when the rider keeps pressure on the pedals and chooses a gear that allows a controlled cadence. The benefit is a stronger reserve for a momentary obstacle, not an automatic ability to clear every ledge.
Roots, rocks and square edges
Bosch specifically describes increased support for high steps, roots and other technically challenging sections. A brief surge can help the rear wheel climb an edge when your momentum is low. Smooth pedal timing remains important: an abrupt input on loose ground can overwhelm available traction, while a controlled input lets the tire stay hooked up.
Tight turns and technical exits
In a slow, tight turn followed by an uphill exit, the system may deliver higher support when it detects the demanding situation. That can reduce the effort needed to accelerate out of the corner, but steering, body position and line choice still determine whether the tire follows the intended path.
What it will not do
- It will not supply 120 Nm continuously regardless of whether you pedal.
- It will not guarantee that the tire has enough traction for a loose climb.
- It will not compensate for an unsuitable gear, poor line choice, inadequate tire pressure or an overly abrupt pedal stroke.
- It will not make a heavy, poorly fitted or poorly maintained bike handle like a different chassis.
How Bosch’s assistance percentage differs from torque
Bosch separately lists up to 600% support in selected situations. That percentage is not another way of writing 120 Nm. Support percentage describes how much motor assistance is provided relative to the rider’s input, while torque is a rotational-force limit. Bosch says the up-to-600% figure applies in Race, Turbo, eMTB+, Cargo and Auto modes and up to 15 km/h. It is therefore a mode- and speed-qualified claim, not a general statement that every mode delivers 600% or that the bike will travel at a particular speed.

| Specification | Meaning | What it cannot tell you by itself |
|---|---|---|
| 120 Nm maximum torque | The highest torque setting available to an eligible system, subject to the bike maker’s cap | Constant rear-wheel force, speed, range or climbing success |
| 85 Nm base setting | The starting torque level Bosch identifies before performance upgrade 2.0 adjustment | How much torque a specific bicycle currently exposes |
| Up to 600% support | A separate assistance claim for specified modes and situations | A universal percentage in every mode or at every speed |
| Peak watts | Electrical-to-mechanical power capability, if separately specified | The same thing as torque at all cadences |
| Assisted-speed limit | The speed at which a system’s assistance is limited under applicable rules and configuration | The motor’s torque capability |
Is 120 Nm enough for steep climbs?
It can be useful for steep, technical climbs, but “enough” depends on more than the headline number. A rider who maintains traction, selects an appropriate gear and supplies steady pedal power may appreciate the additional short-duration reserve. Another rider on the same motor can struggle if the rear tire spins, the gear is too high or body position unloads the front wheel.
No independent controlled climbing-time, range, wear or handling comparison was established for 120 Nm versus a lower setting. Bosch’s description is a manufacturer explanation of intended system behavior, not a measured guarantee that a particular gradient will be conquered faster. Treat the setting as extra capability for difficult moments rather than as a promise of a specific result.
Factors that matter alongside torque
- Gradient and surface: A firm, steep ramp allows more of the available torque to become forward motion than wet roots or loose gravel.
- Gearing and cadence: The same motor torque produces different wheel behavior in different gears and at different cadences.
- Rider input: Bosch says higher peak support requires dynamic power at the pedals.
- Chassis and fit: Suspension setup, wheelbase, tire choice and rider position affect control when assistance rises.
- Battery state and temperature: System management can limit assistance as operating conditions change; the 120 Nm label is not a promise that the ceiling is available in every circumstance.
How to check whether your bike can use 120 Nm
- Identify the drive unit. Look in the bike’s technical specification, motor label or eBike Flow app for the BDU designation. Confirm whether it is a BDU38 Performance Line CX or CX-R rather than assuming every CX-branded motor qualifies.
- Check software status. Bosch made performance upgrade 2.0 available as a free over-the-air update from May 4, 2026. Use the update function in the eBike Flow app while following Bosch’s instructions for a charged battery and a stable phone connection.
- Find the bike’s permitted maximum. The app can expose torque adjustments only up to the limit defined by the bicycle manufacturer. If the highest selectable value is below 120 Nm, the frame maker has capped that model or configuration.
- Confirm the exact model year and market. Components and software can differ by region and production year. Use the manufacturer’s documentation for your exact bicycle, not a similarly named model sold elsewhere.
- Test progressively. Begin on a firm, open climb. Increase assistance gradually, keep your weight balanced and observe traction, steering response and battery use before taking the setting onto a narrow or loose technical section.
Do not attempt to unlock a higher value with unofficial firmware or hardware changes. A manufacturer limit can reflect the frame, drivetrain, thermal management and warranty conditions of that specific bicycle.

Does more torque mean more range?
No direct range conclusion follows from the 120 Nm number. Using stronger assistance can draw more energy during demanding sections, but Bosch says its strategy applies higher support for short periods and then returns to an efficient level. Bosch presents that approach as a way to reduce material wear and maximize range; it is a manufacturer-stated design objective, not an independently measured improvement.
Battery capacity, total elevation, rider mass, tire pressure, temperature, chosen mode and how continuously you pedal all influence range. A larger battery, such as the 800 Wh capacity listed for the cited Rail+ configuration, provides more stored energy than a smaller pack, but it still does not turn the 4–10-hour manufacturer claim into a guarantee for your route.
Does 120 Nm increase drivetrain wear?
A higher possible torque places greater potential load on the chain, cassette, chainring and freewheel when the rider and motor apply force together. Actual wear depends on shifting under load, contamination, maintenance, riding conditions and how often the system reaches high support. Bosch says its short-term peak strategy is intended to reduce material wear, but the supplied official information does not establish a measured service-life difference between 120 Nm and 85 Nm.

How to compare two e-MTBs when one advertises 120 Nm
Use the torque figure as one checkpoint in a larger comparison. Ask the seller or manufacturer for the following details in writing:
- Drive-unit family and generation: Is it BDU38 CX/CX-R or another Bosch generation?
- Actual maximum enabled: Does the bicycle expose 120 Nm, or has the manufacturer set a lower cap?
- Assistance behavior: Which modes provide the strongest support, and how does the system respond on technical sections?
- Battery and charging: What is the battery capacity, removable-battery arrangement and expected charging setup?
- Trail design: Does the frame’s suspension, geometry, tire clearance and dropper-post travel fit the terrain you ride?
- Regional specification: Are the listed motor, battery and software details valid in your country and for the exact model year?
A bike with a lower advertised torque maximum can still be the better choice if its fit, tires, suspension setup, weight distribution and service support suit your trails. Conversely, a 120 Nm model may offer useful reserve without changing the fundamental handling requirements of a powerful e-MTB.
Practical riding technique for a high-torque setting
Approach the obstacle with momentum you can control
Enter a step or root at a speed that leaves room to steer. Selecting a lower gear before the obstacle lets you maintain a smoother cadence and reduces the temptation to stomp on the pedals once the front wheel reaches the edge.
Keep pedal pressure smooth
Because the strongest assistance depends on your input, a consistent pedal stroke gives the control system a clearer request than repeated abrupt surges. If the rear wheel spins, ease the pressure, lower your center of mass and choose a line with better grip.
Use the setting where it helps
Reserve the highest support for short, difficult sections rather than treating it as an always-on mode. On long fire-road climbs, a lower setting may feel easier to modulate and can reduce unnecessary battery consumption.
Reassess after the first rides
Note how the bike responds to your preferred cadence, tire pressure and suspension settings. If steering feels light, traction breaks unexpectedly or the drivetrain shifts harshly, adjust technique and setup before assuming that more torque is the solution.
The precise bottom line
For a BDU38 Bosch Performance Line CX or CX-R equipped with performance upgrade 2.0, 120 Nm is the highest torque setting the system can make available, starting from an 85 Nm base and subject to the bicycle manufacturer’s cap. It can provide a brief, situation-specific boost on steep, technical trail features when you are actively pedaling. It is not constant rear-wheel force, a speed or range rating, a substitute for traction and technique, or a guarantee that every compatible bicycle actually enables the full value. Verify the drive-unit generation, software and manufacturer limit before treating the number as part of a buying or setup decision.
