West Coast Customs and CART Department joined forces for the West Coast Customs Experience at the 2024 Los Angeles Auto Show, bringing artist-associated cars together with custom builds and student projects. The public exhibition ran November 22 through December 1, 2024, at the Los Angeles Convention Center; it has ended.
What the collaboration presented
The LA Auto Show described the West Coast Customs Experience as a mix of custom vehicles, classics, exotics, art cars, and student-built projects. CART Department curated the art-car portion, which appeared alongside West Coast Customs Academy projects. The event therefore brought together distinct kinds of automotive work rather than presenting every vehicle as part of one art-car collection. LA Auto Show’s experience overview

Which cars and artists were highlighted?
The LA Auto Show’s announcement named works associated with Virgil Abloh, Daniel Arsham, How and Nosm, Haze, Richard Prince, Futura, Keith Haring, and Jay-Z and Kanye West. Hypebeast singled out Keith Haring’s painted 1983 Buick, Abloh’s Project Geländewagen, and the deconstructed Maybach featured in the “Otis” video. Designboom described the Art Car Series as a ten-vehicle presentation and included works associated with Damien Hirst and FAILE in addition to several artists named elsewhere. Its selection and count should be understood as that publication’s description of the series, not as a definitive count of all vehicles at the broader West Coast Customs Experience. Art cars versus the wider West Coast Customs display
The CART Department-curated art cars were only one part of the West Coast Customs Experience. The organizer separately named commissioned projects including the Travis Scott M3, Don Toliver AMG Mercedes, Oscar De La Hoya C10, Paris Hilton Bentley, a will.i.am concept Tesla, and the Suburban X Escalade. The idea behind the Art Car Series
Larry Warsh, CART Department’s founder, framed the series as a meeting point between art and popular culture. He emphasized the cars’ ability to tell stories and to act as a record of contemporary culture for future audiences.
