A stop lamp switch—also called a brake light switch—detects when you press the service brake pedal and helps signal the vehicle to turn on its rear brake lights. On some vehicles, that signal also goes to electronic control systems, so the switch is more than a simple lamp connection.
What does a stop lamp switch do?
The switch changes electrical state when the brake pedal is pressed. The vehicle uses that signal to illuminate the stop lamps and, depending on its design, to tell electronic control modules that braking is taking place. NHTSA describes the switch as signaling the vehicle’s electronic control unit when the service brake pedal is pressed and illuminating the brake lights in a 2010 recall communication.
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 addresses the required relationship between service-brake application and stop-lamp operation; NHTSA discusses that relationship in its interpretation record. The switch’s exact electrical design and connections vary by vehicle.
Where is it located?
In the documented NHTSA service example, the switch assembly is mounted at the brake-pedal mechanism. The procedure identifies a connector, plunger, brake-pedal stopper, and lock nut. Other vehicles may use a different arrangement, so consult service information for the exact year, make, model, and configuration rather than assuming the same location or hardware. What are possible signs of a fault?
- Brake lights do not illuminate: The lamps may fail to come on when the pedal is pressed.
- Brake lights stay on: The lamps may remain lit after the pedal is released.
- Other vehicle symptoms: NHTSA recall materials describe a malfunction indicator light and a possible no-start condition in a specific switch-defect case. Another recall communication describes possible brake drag associated with a deformed switch bracket.
These are clues, not proof that the switch has failed. Adjustment, the pedal stopper, wiring, lamps, or another vehicle-specific fault may be involved. The examples come from particular vehicles described in NHTSA’s 2010 recall communication and 2021 recall submission; they are not a universal symptom checklist.
How is a stop lamp switch checked?
A vehicle-specific inspection may include checking switch clearance, manually operating the plunger, confirming stop-lamp operation, and testing electrical continuity. In the 2009 NHTSA-hosted procedure, the specified clearance between the switch housing and brake-pedal stopper is 0.5–1.0 mm (0.02–0.04 in). That measurement applies only to the vehicle covered by that procedure; it is not a general specification.

Adjustment and replacement steps differ among vehicles. If the diagnosis is uncertain, or you cannot access the correct service procedure and safely verify operation afterward, have a qualified mechanic inspect it.
Why should you avoid bypassing or altering its wiring?
On some vehicles, the brake on/off signal is used by systems beyond the stop lamps. A Ford bulletin reproduced in an NHTSA interpretation record warns that circuit changes can affect engine control, speed control, or ABS functions. Do not splice or bypass the switch based on a generic diagram; use wiring information for the specific vehicle.

What should you know before replacement?
If replacement is confirmed, choose a vehicle-specific stop lamp switch or brake light switch. Check the exact year, make, model, trim, connector, and manufacturer fitment notes; appearance alone does not establish compatibility. Follow the manufacturer’s installation and adjustment procedure.
A 2021 NHTSA recall submission describes one specific defect in which silicon-based grease off-gassing, contact oxidation, and silicon dioxide buildup could cause an open circuit. The planned remedy for the affected vehicles was switch replacement and installation of a protective grommet. That recall remedy is not a universal upgrade or repair instruction. Check recall status for the vehicle identification number and follow the applicable manufacturer service information.
