That does not establish that every movement was remote-controlled: reporting distinguished assisted interactions from prototypes said to walk using AI without external control. The word “dummies” in the original headline is rhetorical, not a technical finding that the robots lacked autonomous capability.
What was reported about the robots at the event?
TechCrunch reported that people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that employees stationed remotely oversaw many interactions between Optimus robots and attendees. The same report said prototypes could walk without external control using AI. Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas characterized the robots as having “relied on tele-ops (human intervention).” TechCrunch’s October 14, 2024, report does not assign a control method to every action.
Futurism also reported Jonas’s characterization and distinguished AI walking from assisted conversation. Its phrase “remotely controlled dummies” is an editorially pointed headline, not an engineering classification or proof that the robots were incapable of acting autonomously. Futurism’s October 15, 2024, report likewise does not provide a task-by-task account.
Tesla Optimus engineer Milan Kovac publicly acknowledged that the robots were “human assisted to some extent to help showcase our vision of an amazing future,” as reported by Axios in October 2024. That confirms assistance in general, but does not specify which actions were assisted or how.

Which capabilities were autonomous, and which were assisted?
The available accounts support a distinction between types of activity, not a blanket verdict about every robot or demonstration:

These are not equally direct forms of evidence: the walking and remote-employee details were attributed to unnamed sources in reporting; Kovac’s statement was a public acknowledgment of assistance; and Jonas’s description was an analyst’s characterization. None provides a full technical log of the demonstrations.

What does Tesla say Optimus is meant to do?
Tesla’s AI and Robotics page describes Optimus as a project to create a general-purpose, bipedal autonomous humanoid robot. The company says that goal requires software for balance, navigation, perception, and interaction with the physical world. This describes Tesla’s aim; it is not independent evidence that the goal had been achieved at the 2024 event.
What did Tesla say about robot demonstrations later?
On Tesla’s Q2 2026 earnings call on August 5, 2026, CEO Elon Musk said: “So you’ve probably seen lots of impressive demonstrations of robots on the Internet, but those demonstrations you’re seeing are preprogrammed or remote controlled.” He also described generalized task performance as a major challenge. This is Musk’s later, broad characterization of robot demonstrations, not a retrospective technical inventory of the October 2024 We, Robot event. What is the fairest conclusion?
At the 2024 event, human assistance was involved in at least some Optimus interactions, and reports described many attendee interactions as overseen by remotely stationed employees. The evidence also distinguished those interactions from walking that prototypes were said to perform with AI and without external control. Because no available account maps every action to its control method, it is not justified to say that all the robots were puppets—or that every demonstration was autonomous.
