In August 2019, Futurism reporter Dan Robitzski rode an Optimus Ride shuttle on private streets at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The shuttle steered itself along a mapped route and responded to a cyclist, but engineers monitored it from onboard and a human driver took over for a three-point turn and parking. The ride showed a supervised demonstration—not a vehicle ready for unrestricted New York City streets.
What was the 2019 shuttle demonstration?
Optimus Ride introduced its autonomous shuttles at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where they traveled on private streets. Futurism described the debut as New York City’s first public autonomous vehicles; that wording refers to the reported 2019 debut, not to the first time any autonomous vehicle had ever been tested or demonstrated in the city. Futurism’s August 7, 2019 account is a firsthand report from one launch-event ride.
The reporter described a shuttle carrying four passengers, with two engineers in the front row. One watched the road; the other monitored a laptop showing what the vehicle was about to do. The route was mapped and its destinations programmed. The four-passenger figure describes the demonstration vehicle in that account, not a current model specification.
Did the shuttle actually drive itself?
For part of the mapped route, yes: the shuttle controlled its movement and reacted to a road user. Robitzski saw it slow and swerve around a cyclist without leaving its lane. He described the ride as shaky, while saying it felt safe to him. Those are observations from one short ride, not a formal test, safety assessment, or proof of performance in other conditions.

Human operators remained involved. A driver took over to make a three-point turn while another person outside guided the maneuver; the driver later took the wheel to park. Engineers said operators would remain onboard for the foreseeable future. Asked about the turn limitation, Optimus Ride Head of Product Stephanie Wu said, “There’s no fundamental reason we can’t do a three-point turn,” Wu explained, “We’re just not right now.”
What technology did the team describe?
At the event, Optimus Ride vice president of engineering Ruijie He said the system combined visual recordings with LIDAR in a single data stream to give the shuttle more detailed information about its surroundings. The report also described software displaying recognized objects and changing confidence values. It did not establish the system’s recognition accuracy or provide a safety statistic, so those interface details should not be read as proof of reliability.

Why was the route not a test of ordinary city driving?
The Navy Yard route was mapped and ran on private streets. The report contrasted those comparatively quiet, structured conditions with the complexity of ordinary New York City streets and highway edge cases. A shuttle completing a short trip there does not demonstrate that it could handle unrestricted public-road driving.
Wu summarized the challenge this way: “It’s gonna be incremental,” she told the reporter. “There’s a lot of human complexity.” CEO Ryan Chin framed the launch as public-facing outreach: “What we’re doing is showing New Yorkers how autonomous vehicles will benefit their lives,” he said, “both at an economical level and a cultural level.”

How does New York City oversee autonomous-vehicle testing now?
For present-day context, NYC DOT says autonomous-vehicle street testing is overseen through a city permit program, and New York State law requires an operator to be present and ready to take control while the technology is operating. The NYC DOT autonomous vehicle testing page lists permit information that can change; when reviewed, it showed Waymo’s permit active through March 31, 2026. Check the city page for current requirements and permit status rather than relying on a dated listing.
The city’s March 2024 program announcement likewise described a trained safety driver behind the wheel and ready to take control. These city policies describe current testing oversight; they do not establish the performance or legal status of Optimus Ride’s 2019 Navy Yard demonstration.
