In July 2019, a pedestrian made contact with the side of an autonomous shuttle in Vienna’s Seestadt Aspern district. Contemporary reporting described the woman as walking into the bus—not the bus striking her—and said she suffered minor abrasions. Wiener Linien paused the trial while it examined the incident; the research project later ended in 2021.
What happened in Seestadt Aspern?
The incident took place at about 9:30 a.m. on July 18, 2019, on Ilse-Arlt-Straße near the Seestadt U2 station. ORF reported that the woman, described as about 30, had headphones on and was looking at her phone when she touched the side of the shuttle. Those details came from eyewitness accounts reported by ORF; they do not establish who was legally at fault.
The woman was reported to have suffered minor abrasions. Wiener Linien temporarily halted passenger operations while it examined the circumstances and recorded data with the vehicle manufacturer. ORF’s July 18, 2019 report covered the incident and pause.
What did the operator say about the shuttle’s response?
A later VIENNA.AT/APA report relayed Wiener Linien’s account: the shuttle detected the woman as a potential obstacle, sounded a warning, and began braking when she continued. A Wiener Linien spokesperson said 1.6 seconds elapsed between detection and the stop, and that the shuttle had been travelling at no more than 12 km/h.

This is the operator’s explanation as reported by the media, not a published independent accident-investigation finding. The available reporting does not establish that the shuttle caused the contact or that the pedestrian was at fault. After the temporary pause, service resumed with one shuttle.
What kind of bus service was operating there?
The shuttle was part of auto.Bus-Seestadt, a research project testing two small electric autonomous buses in passenger service near Seestadt station. Wiener Linien describes the route as roughly two kilometres. Its project information says the vehicles used 2D and 3D LiDAR and satellite positioning; an onboard operator could take manual control to steer around persistent obstacles.

The project ran for three years and ended on June 30, 2021, according to Wiener Linien’s project page. The buses should not be mistaken for a current Vienna route. A trial conducted on a defined route with an onboard operator cannot, by itself, establish how safe autonomous buses are generally.

The reported sequence offers a limited account of one event: a pedestrian contacted the shuttle’s side, she sustained minor abrasions, and the operator paused the service before restarting it. The later technical details are attributed to the operator; they are not an independently verified reconstruction. The sources do not provide a broader collision-rate statistic or support a comparative safety ranking of autonomous buses.
