Were Tesla’s Optimus Robots at the Cybercab Event Humans in Disguise?

Tesla’s Optimus robots at the October 2024 Cybercab event were not people in costumes. They were real prototypes, but human operators assisted many conversations and hands-on demonstrations while some walking, balancing, and dancing appeared autonomous.

No. The Optimus machines shown at Tesla’s October 10, 2024, Cybercab event were real physical robot prototypes, not people inside robot costumes. But the viral criticism contained an important truth: human Tesla employees remotely assisted many of the robots’ conversations and hands-on interactions with guests.

The fairest description is that Tesla demonstrated a hybrid system: available evidence indicates that at least some walking, balancing, and dancing were autonomous, while more complicated activities such as serving drinks, playing games, and conversing were human-assisted. The event did not prove that Optimus could independently perform everything viewers saw.

The short verdict

Claim Verdict
“The Optimus robots were humans in disguise.” False or misleading. There is no credible evidence that people were physically inside the 2024 Optimus units.
“Humans controlled the robots.” Substantially true, but incomplete. Human operators assisted many public interactions.
“Every robot was completely remote-controlled.” Unsupported. Tesla’s engineer said the robots could walk, balance, and dance on their own.
“There was no AI involved.” Unsupported. Human assistance and autonomous software can operate together.

The controversy is therefore not really about whether Tesla brought robots or actors to the event. It is about which parts of the demonstration were autonomous, which were remotely assisted, and whether Tesla made that distinction clear enough to viewers.

What happened at Tesla’s “We, Robot” event?

Tesla held its “We, Robot” Cybercab event on October 10, 2024, at Warner Bros. Discovery Studios in Burbank, California. Alongside the Cybercab robotaxi and Robovan presentations, Tesla placed Optimus robots among attendees.

Guests and viewers saw the humanoid machines:

  • walk through the venue and around crowds;
  • talk with attendees and answer questions;
  • pose for selfies;
  • play rock-paper-scissors and similar games;
  • pour or serve drinks; and
  • dance during a later party sequence.

The official livestream labels the dance segment “Optimus Dance Party,” beginning at approximately 23:44. Tesla’s official event recap presented Optimus as part of a future in which humanoid robots could help with household work.

Elon Musk described possible future tasks including walking dogs, mowing lawns, getting groceries, babysitting, and serving drinks. He also suggested a future price of roughly $20,000 to $30,000. Those were projections about a future product, not specifications proving what the event prototypes could do independently that night.

Why did people say the robots were “humans in disguise”?

The wording was partly a callback to an earlier Tesla presentation. At Tesla’s 2021 AI Day, a person in a robot suit performed as a preview of the company’s humanoid-robot concept. During AI Day 2022, Musk explicitly contrasted the new Optimus prototype with that earlier stunt, saying that the previous year had featured “just a person in a robot suit.” Background on that transition is available in the 2022 AI Day video archive and contemporary coverage of the Optimus reveal.

That history helps explain the viral joke, but it does not make the 2024 claim literally accurate. The two situations were different:

  • 2021: a human visibly performed in a robot suit.
  • 2024: real robot hardware was operating at the event, but unseen humans assisted some of its behavior remotely.

A remote operator is not a person inside the machine. Teleoperation can make a robot appear more capable than its autonomous software currently is, but it does not turn the robot into a costume.

The evidence that human operators assisted Optimus

1. Reporting about the event’s control system

TechCrunch reported, citing Bloomberg’s reporting and people familiar with the event, that Tesla employees remotely oversaw many Optimus interactions with guests. The reporting made an important distinction: the robots could walk without external control, while humans assisted more complex interactions.

The original Bloomberg Línea account likewise described human control of some capabilities rather than proving that every motion of every robot was remotely driven.

2. Attendee accounts and video

Attendee Robert Scoble posted that an engineer told him Optimus used AI for walking, while a human remotely assisted activities such as pouring drinks, playing games, and conversing with guests. His account is available in his event post.

Another video showed Scoble asking how much of the robot was controlled by AI. The response, reported as “I can’t disclose just how much,” and the apparent synchronization between the robot’s speech and gestures added to the suspicion that a remote operator was involved. That behavior is consistent with teleoperation, although response timing by itself is not conclusive proof: a fast AI system can also respond quickly.

3. An Optimus said it was human-assisted

In a separate event video, a bartender Optimus said:

“Today, I am assisted by a human.”

The video is useful direct evidence that at least one robot was receiving human assistance. However, the statement does not establish exactly what the person was doing. It does not tell us whether the operator controlled the robot’s hands, supplied conversation and intent, selected tasks, intervened only when needed, or used some combination of those methods.

4. Tesla’s engineer acknowledged assistance

On October 16, 2024, Optimus engineer Milan Kovac wrote that the roughly 20 active robots were “human assisted to some extent.” He also said they walked, balanced, and danced on their own for about four hours, with one fall. His statement is available in the original post; Axios reported the context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kovac’s account is the clearest basis for the nuanced conclusion: real Optimus hardware was combined with autonomous locomotion and balance, plus human assistance for some of the more demanding public interactions. His figures and claims were not accompanied by public control logs or independent telemetry, so they should be attributed rather than treated as an independently audited test result.

What was autonomous, and what was human-assisted?

The public evidence does not provide a complete technical breakdown for every unit. Still, it supports different confidence levels for different behaviors:

This is not a software teardown. Tesla did not publish the operators’ video feeds, control logs, telemetry, or the software architecture used at the event. The table separates what the public evidence supports from what remains speculation.

What does “human-assisted” actually mean?

That phrase can describe several different arrangements. It does not automatically mean that a person was manually controlling every joint or “driving” the robot like an avatar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Remote monitoring: an operator watches the robot and intervenes only when necessary.
  2. High-level task assignment: a person tells the robot what task to perform while the robot handles some movement autonomously.
  3. Partial teleoperation: an operator directly controls certain arm, hand, speech, or gesture actions.
  4. Telepresence: a remote human supplies much of the perception, conversation, or decision-making while the robot carries out physical movements.
  5. Hybrid autonomy: autonomous walking or balance is combined with human-controlled manipulation, dialogue, or fallback control.

The available record supports the last category, possibly involving several of the others. It does not reveal whether each Optimus had a dedicated operator, whether operators controlled hands or arms directly, or whether humans primarily supplied conversational intent and task instructions.

Why a robot can walk autonomously but need help serving a drink

Walking and interacting with a person are separate robotics problems. A robot may be able to stabilize its body, plan foot placement, and follow a route while still struggling to understand an unexpected request, identify a particular object, grasp it reliably, and manipulate it safely.

Conversation adds another layer. A public interaction requires speech recognition in a noisy room, context tracking, response generation, timing, gesture selection, and the ability to recover when a guest behaves unpredictably. Pouring a drink requires visual perception, force control, hand coordination, and a safety response if the container moves or spills.

That is why the event should not be reduced to an “autonomous versus fake” binary. A robot can have genuine autonomous balance and locomotion while relying on a human for language, intent, dexterous manipulation, or emergency intervention.

Does teleoperation mean Optimus was fake?

No. Teleoperation is a legitimate technique in robotics development. It can allow engineers to:

  • test real hardware in an uncontrolled environment;
  • collect demonstrations and training data;
  • perform difficult tasks before the autonomous system is complete;
  • supervise a prototype around members of the public;
  • provide a safety fallback when autonomy fails; and
  • demonstrate the robot’s physical range of motion.

The issue is not that Tesla used human assistance. The issue is that a teleoperated demonstration does not establish the same capability as an autonomous demonstration.

What the event did show: Tesla had functioning humanoid hardware with real mobility, balance, dexterity, and the ability to interact with guests when supported by remote humans.

What the event did not show: that Optimus could independently understand noisy conversations, decide what a guest wanted, manipulate a drink dispenser, play an unpredictable game, and safely carry on a conversation in a crowded party.

What Tesla disclosed—and what it did not

Tesla’s public presentation emphasized what Optimus could do, but it did not plainly explain to attendees that many guest interactions were human-assisted. The Information summarized the reporting by saying the remote operation was not disclosed.

The wording matters. It is supported to say that Tesla did not prominently disclose the extent of human assistance. It is not established that Tesla expressly claimed every interaction was fully autonomous, nor is there enough evidence here to declare that the company committed fraud or intentionally deceived the audience.

Still, viewers could reasonably infer a greater level of autonomous capability than the event actually demonstrated. A clearer presentation would have identified which functions were autonomous, which were remotely assisted, and how much supervision was required.

Tesla’s follow-up after the controversy

On October 17, 2024, Tesla’s Optimus account posted a factory video showing a robot walking through a facility, locating a charging dock, carrying a tray of batteries, and climbing stairs. The video was widely viewed as a response to criticism that the event robots were primarily controlled by humans. Bloomberg Law reported on the follow-up.

The video is relevant evidence that Optimus was not merely a person in a suit. But it does not settle the original question. A controlled factory demonstration involving navigation and carrying is not equivalent to proving independent speech understanding, social interaction, dexterous drink service, and decision-making in a crowded party.

Tesla had also said in its Q2 2024 shareholder update that Optimus was performing an initial battery-handling task in one of its facilities. That supports the existence of genuine development and some autonomous or semi-autonomous industrial work, but it does not prove autonomy during the Cybercab event.

What remains unknown

The public evidence does not answer several important technical questions:

  • How many operators supported the robots?
  • Did every Optimus have a dedicated operator?
  • Did humans control the arms and hands directly, or mostly provide high-level instructions?
  • Who supplied the spoken answers: an operator, an AI system, or a combination?
  • Were the dancing routines autonomous, pre-programmed, operator-triggered, or supervised?
  • Did different robots operate with different levels of autonomy?
  • How much independent perception and decision-making occurred during each interaction?
  • Was Tesla collecting training data during the event?

Those unknowns are why sweeping claims in either direction are unreliable. The evidence is strong enough to reject the literal costume claim and confirm human assistance, but not strong enough to reconstruct Tesla’s entire control stack.

How to describe the event accurately

These formulations are defensible:

  • “Tesla demonstrated real Optimus robots using a mix of autonomous locomotion and human-assisted interaction.”
  • “Human operators assisted many of the robots’ conversations and hands-on demonstrations at the Cybercab event.”
  • “Tesla’s engineer said the robots walked, balanced, and danced autonomously, while other capabilities were human-assisted.”
  • “The event showed functioning humanoid hardware, but did not establish full autonomy for the behaviors shown to guests.”

These formulations go too far:

  • “The robots were all people in costumes.”
  • “There were no robots at the event.”
  • “Every robot was fully remote-controlled for every movement.”
  • “There was no AI involved.”
  • “Tesla admitted the demonstration was fake.”

It is also important not to generalize from the bartender robot to every Optimus unit. One robot’s statement proves human assistance for that robot at that moment; it does not establish identical control arrangements for all machines at the venue.

Final fact-check

The headline “The Optimus robots at Tesla’s Cybercab event were humans in disguise” is wrong if read literally. The machines were real Tesla robot prototypes.

The criticism behind the headline is nevertheless grounded in fact. Human employees assisted many of the robots’ public interactions, including conversation, games, and serving drinks. Tesla’s engineer also said the robots could walk, balance, and dance on their own, so “all the robots were completely remote-controlled” is an overstatement in the opposite direction.

The most accurate conclusion is simple: Optimus was real, but the 2024 demonstration was not a full autonomous test. It combined robot autonomy with human assistance, and Tesla did not clearly disclose that distinction during the event.

Sources and public evidence

Frequently Asked Questions

Were there people physically inside Tesla’s Optimus robots at the 2024 Cybercab event?

No credible evidence supports that claim. The units were physical Tesla robot prototypes. The controversy concerned remote human assistance, not people occupying the machines.

Could the Optimus robots walk without a human controlling them?

Available reporting and a statement from Tesla Optimus engineer Milan Kovac indicate that the robots could walk and balance autonomously. No independent telemetry or control logs were published, so that claim should be attributed to Tesla and reporting about the event.

Does human assistance mean there was no AI in Optimus?

No. A robot can use autonomous software for locomotion, balance, perception, or other functions while a human assists with conversation, task selection, manipulation, or fallback control. The event did not disclose the exact division.

Did Tesla prove that Optimus was ready to be a household robot?

No. The event demonstrated real hardware and some impressive mobility, but it did not establish that Optimus could independently perform the full range of household and social tasks described by Elon Musk.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Tesla’s Optimus robots were not humans in disguise. They were real prototypes using a hybrid of autonomous movement and human-assisted interaction. The event supported claims about genuine robot hardware and some autonomous mobility, but it did not prove that the robots could independently carry out all of the conversations, games, and drink-serving demonstrations shown to guests.
